Live Poll: One-Location Movies

The one-location movie is a producer’s best friend and a director’s worst enemy. On the budgetary side of business, it’s a dream come true: a single set, a small stable of characters, no cordoning off a public area for shooting. But there are also manifold creative challenges — there’s nothing to rely on but good ol’ fashioned acting, writing, and camerawork. Flash and style can only get a filmmaker so far when they’ve got nothing to work with but four walls, a handful of performers, and words. Source: Vulture.com (by Charles Bramesco) Which one-location movie has the best setting? My list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls022625317/ Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/Ka96lYhF11U/ Note: Some movies are shot at multiple locations, but the main part of the story takes place at one location.

Thanks, I added The Shining and Birdman. I think Psycho doesn’t fit in this list. Because of the multiple locations.

I watched Psycho a long time ago. Don't remember exactly. :)

Are you kidding? I could have sworn this poll has been done before. In 5 years, I can't believe it has never been suggested.

Yes, I was surprised to. I couldn’t find a similar poll.

FYC: Sleuth (1972) (Location: Country Manor House) Sleuth (2007) (Location: Country Manor House) Garage (Garazh) (1980) (Location: Natural History Museum; Soviet cult classic comedy which takes place in the natural history museum in which garage cooperative tries to settle their things) Mean Guns (1997) ( location: an unopened freshly built prison; on of my personal favorites) Also, I don't know whether it counts, but it usually is: what about adaptations of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None"?..

Thanks, I added Sleuth. The other movies aren't known I think. They haven't many votes. For now I don't add them. I like to have a list with well known movies.

Hokie, For your consideration: Waiting for Godot (2001) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0276613/ Two tramps wait for a man named Godot, but instead meet a pompous man and his stooped-over slave. Location: A country road by a tree https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Godot This is probably the primary example of a play set in one location. The 2001 film version of the play is the highest rated and has the most votes.

The Hateful Eight "minnie's haberdashery"

The Hateful Eight doesn't take place entirely at Minnie's Haberdashery, but presumably the opening scene is within a short distance (perhaps half a mile) of the haberdashery shop.

Yeah I know but the description of the post allows to have this suggestion. The main part is in minnie's haberdashery.

Hoekkie, you should perhaps narrow down the inclusion criteria a little more. Locations can exist in various sizes, so it might be wise to only include arbitrarily-sized locations (buildings, parks, forests, lakes or so) that do not themselves really constitute a diverse collection of locations within locations, perhaps emphasizing the name and structural/geographical boundaries that define a location.

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly. But I like the movies with a clear, small set. Like a hotel room, car, elevator. And I want to avoid the big locations, like Shawshank Redemption, The Thing etc. Is that what you mean? Or can you give an example? Do I have one in my list which is on locations of a location?

What you have in mind seems similar to two existing polls, Hoekkie.

I don't agree. One is about trapped in a tight space and the other one is about stuck in a room. Mine is about the one-location movie setting.

Hoekkie, that just means that the characters in the pictures belonging the criteria you have mind are free to go to other locations but choose not to, right? Maybe you should specify the size of the locations you have in mind.

How about 1966 Fantastic Voyage: underground complex, minisub, inside human body, after entry to hidden base.

I watched the trailer. I saw different locations and I think this is not the type of movie I'm looking for. But thanks!

It's cool, that our both polls got released the same time, because they are about familiar subjects.
