The most unneeded remake was Death on the Nile.  There was a fantastic 1978 version starring Peter Ustinov, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Olivia Hussey, Lois Chiles, Angela Lansbury, David Niven, Maggie Smith, and Jack Warden.  This stellar cast, along with all of the production values, made this a definitive version of the Agatha Christie novel.

I don't know about Peter Ustinov. But, as a francophile and lover of Belgium, it is hard to have anglophone playing Poirot (and it is always anglophones playing Poirot!!! I still can't understand how Albert Finney got nominated for his performance in Murder on the Orient Express, Albert Finney probably does the worst attempt at French I have ever seen from a Poirot, it is almost impossible to understand him.

@cinephile While I am not a speaker or big fan of France or the French, I personally enjoyed Albert Finney's performance and thought he was robbed of the Oscar for this film (Murder on the Orient Express).  It had one of the greatest casts of all time and was thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end.  I am also a big Albert Finney fan myself.  I thought his accent was just off enough to still be understandable without being too far out there.  We will have to agree to disagree on this film.  (Oh, and I hated almost everything about the Kenneth Brannagh remake,,, and I know I spelled his name wrong)

Yeah. We will have to disagree. I haven't seen Harry and Tonto nor Lenny, but 1974 was a strong year for "Actor in a Leading Role" both Jack Nicholson and Pacino deserved to win. Erland Josephson for Scenes from a Marriage or Gene Hackman for The Conversation should have been nominated instead of Albert Finney.

PS: Albert Finney was married to Anouk Aimée (a french actress) (for 4 years) when he made Murder on the Orient Express.  I will never understand how he screwed up so poorly the accent and the pronunciation. Lack of time investment I guess.

A properly French-speaking Poirot would be interesting. "Poirot in Paris," perhaps.

Oddly, there have been multiple English versions of the French detective Maigret.
