Live Poll: Misspelled Movie Titles

No, the producers didn't make a mistake. Sometimes the title of a movie is intentionally spelled incorrectly.

Which movie has the smartest intentionally misspelled title?

Inglourious Basterds and The Pursuit of Happyness, both movies are fantastic. It'd be hard for me to choose between these two.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but what's wrong in "Terminator Genisys"?

BONAFIDE BOSSrocky-o is right: Genisys was a conscious misspelling on filmmakers part it is a portmanteau of "sys" (short for system, a term and abbreviation for system files in operational systems) and "genesis". It is a pun, but also, essentially a misspelling.

Fun fact: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) is a mild case from the perspective of UK and many Anglophone countries since in British English correct word is "judgement".

Oh lol, I thought they were referring to the "General Identification System". (just to be cleared, I haven't watched the movie yet, so I assumed.)

But FYI: The word "Genisys" also exists.

Genius + System = Genisys

Cyberdyne Systems' Genisys is the first computer operating system intended for mass use whose design incorporates artificial intelligence research — in order words, this operating system is smart, or genius.

Assuming you have already watched the movie, I don't think it is explained in the film as directly as the word equation above, but I do believe it is heavily implied.

Maybe, it has the effect of being snazzy and fanciful, for product-selling purposes. As a homonym of "genesis".

leavey-2,

Your poll currently does not include spelling errors, but include capitalization and/or grammar issues. The following title do not have spelling errors:

Dan, in the case of El crimen perfecto, the spelling error is in the original Spanish title.
It was called Crimen ferpecto Which would translate as Ferpect Crime. I don't know how was it called in English, maybe that's the confussion.

In Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, I think the error is that Mumbai has two letter A's instead of one.

Singh is Kinng also has two N's instead of one in King.

Maybe you have the IMDb configuration to show the US Display title instead of the original and the errors are not apparent for this reason.

Good point, indeed. Maybe I have to add the original title for those movies where the US title is different from the original title and does not show the spelling error.

I read that in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai they added an a for good luck due to numerology.

For each option, I have now added the original title as well as the title with the 'correct' spelling.

Thanks, Pencho. Great suggestions. I added:
Mo' Money (1992)
Fack Ju Göhte (2013)
Mortal Kombat (1995)
School Gyrls (2009)
Luv (1967)

Amreeka is correct Arabic for "America", so it's not a spelling mistake.
I'm saving up the suggestions with numbers replacing letters for a new poll.

Se7en (1995)

I think this has to be, by far, the smartest intentionally misspelled title. Add it.

BONAFIDE BOSS, I have a feeling such way of titling, using a digit as a letter is its own thing, even. Ashamed to admit that I don't know whether there's any specific name to such naming, but I remember at least one additional case of it: S1m0ne (2002)

6.8K Messages

 •

Lmao S1m0ne as in Simone. Okay, that's too much (in an amusing way). And yeah, tbh, I don't know either. I don't know if the title of a film you mentioned has any meaning behind it, but Se7en does. I mean, they could have gone with "Seven" or just "7", or maybe they wanted to do something unique.

As far as I know, there wasn't any film before Se7en that did something like it with their title, so I guess, yeah, they did do something unique, which many other films and tv shows follow.

I've also seen a few movies and tv shows using the number digit "3" as the letter "E". An Example: Numb3rs

One more movie comes to my mind, 2 Fast 2 Furious. I read somewhere the "2" in it was meant as "too" > 'Too Fast, Too Furious' and everyone thought it is referring to the characters. But I'm not sure, correct me if I'm wrong in this one
.
Sometimes, "2" is also represented as "to" > Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

I think all this started with Se7en. I'm not 100% sure though.

Don't forget about the films using "z" as "s" because of the pronunciation. There are so many movies like this, which is why I didn't bother to suggest them.

Se7en is indeed a must-have, but just like Nikolay I was wondering if this would possibly make up a category of its own: a separate poll with numbers in the title replacing letters. I don't know. Maybe if I find enough examples.... or by including all symbols, for example Vega$. Just tell me, I'm open to all suggestions...

Leavey: A couple of the corrected spellings on the list are themselves incorrect -- in one case misspelled, in the other case misinterpreted:

Pet Sematary
Corrected spelling shown as: Pet Semetary
Should be: Pet Cemetery

Boyz n the Hood
Corrected spelling shown as: Boys and the Hood
Should be: Boys in the Hood

There are a couple of films that used to be listed on IMDb with intentionally misspelled titles, but those titles have since been corrected to the orthographically correct versions. I haven't seen either film, so I can't confirm how the titles appear on screen:

Encounter in the Third Dimension (1999) -- previously listed as Encounter in the Thrid Dimension
The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991) -- previously listed as The Search for Signs of Inteligent Life in the Universe

These are brilliant! I just don't know how to put them in the poll, because the mistake does not appear in the title but only in the movie itself.

I really like this one. I'm thinking 'Inglourious Basterds.' I love that you ask which is the smartest use of a misspelling.

I don't know if it really counts because Spike Lee put the apostrophe after "mo" to indicate an omission but perhaps

Mo' Better Blues

I'm not sure if there is a code that allows a single line break. You can use a double line break instead.

Google Translate and Bing Translate recognizes POLISSE as an Afrikaans word and is correctly spelled.

Ok, but this is merely a coincidence. Director Maïwenn about the name Polisse: my first idea for the title was "Police". Problem was, another movie already beared this name: none other than famous French director Maurice Pialat's film in 1985.  My next idea was: "Vous êtes de la police ?", again, already used a few years ago. One day, as my young child was learning to write, he misspelled "Police", and I saw in front of my eyes the perfect title considering the subject of the movie, with a child's writing: "Polisse".
