Question: does the film, The Help, count? Because a former maid named Ablene Cooper, who shares striking similarities with the character, Aibileen, has come forward saying that the character is based on her.

It's not a biopic if it's based on someone but not their story. It's a re-imagining with many things changed and added.

I guess their two parts to discuss here. Aside, from the part about it being her story, I am not seeing the connection of how her actions in the Help, big or small changed the world on the level of the some of the other listed women. The second is where is line drawn between true story and fiction to qualify as a biopic. Some latitude is extended to simplify and have a cohesive narrative story . A biopic is defined as a film or television biography, often with fictionalized scenes.. I think it needs to be mostly true and with an occasional fictional element. I would agree with Jen a re-imagining would cross that line.

'Great poll. I would imagine there would be enough to do a "Part Two" poll. (If you do want to do a second part, I can mine my lists for more suggestions.) I really like some of Jen's suggestions and to those I'll add, for your consideration:

Erin Brockovich
Silkwood
The Rosa Parks Story
Temple Grandin
Iron Jawed Angels (this is about a few Suffragists, not just one, but I'd think it still qualifies as a biopic?

Oh, this is a very timely poll because it's Women's History Month. I'd suggest adding some reference to March being Women's History Month in the title. :-)

Thanks, I will go through both lists. If I were to make the women's version into two parts, I would like to split it between one focused on people who inspired from a position of power. The second suggestion focused on woman who inspired through  small but just as powerful actions. Mostly inspiring as an example, a rallying cry, instigating moment, a discovery, a groundbreaking achievement, or the like..

Battle of the Sexes.

May I suggest a small edit?

I'd take out the "educate" in "Movie biopics are a great way to honor, educate and celebrate the contributions of great women with the star power they deserve," because "Movie biopics are a great way to educate the contributions of great women..." doesn't make sense. It'd sound a bit clunky, but I suppose you could say "...honor, educate people about, and celebrate..."

'Nice list.

Thanks, it is clunky. I get so caught up in the biographies, I overlooked the introduction. I took another crack at it, it says what I want to say, just very poorly. I think I was going for brevity, but ended up sacrificing clarity as a result.

Each March in the USA, we recognize female achievements during Women's History Month. Biographical movies are a great way to educate the public about landmark events in the struggle for gender equality. At the same time, these movies both honor and celebrate each woman's achievement with the star power they deserve.

I am not sure others feel the same or make the connection, but this is one of my favorite things about  the movies. There ability to educate about other cultures, countries, different times, events among other things in a way that is far more effective than a book or a class.
