I also agree that ten is a lot. It's one of the less common genres (it's not like drama or comedy) and not everyone sees a lot of horror movies. I'm not sure that I've seen more than ten from that decade and a few I wouldn't recommend, despite only seeing ones that received positive critical reviews. (I haven't counted yet or gone through my list of films that I've seen so I may have ten or even more but it wouldn't be a whole lot more. I'll certainly do my best to come up with ten, though.)

I was wrong (and how). I take back everything I said, lol. Seriously, when even I actually saw many more than ten horror films and liked most of them, that says something about the decade that produced them, which I address in my conclusion. Thanks, Breu, for putting me in the position to learn something new about films, my relationship to them, and broader society's response to them. I really enjoyed putting this list together.

But you already got 10. This is a poll suggestion for horror movie fans. Each year there are a few hundret movies of the genre released. I think 10 are ok. If there are really less people who can name ten ups of their genre, I might cut it down to 5, maybe? Lets wait a little. The 2010s are gone, so anybody can take time to remember on last 10 years.

The best horror movies are those that use their horror elements for another purpose, they tell us something about a character, make a point about a certain theme, or use a scary situation as a setup for a relieving laugh.

Sorry about the complaining above, I just didn't recall all the movies of the past decade. I recently watched so many new and re-watched some old horror movies to complete my list for this poll.
Also, I didn't know that 'World War Z' and 'Upgrade' had the Horror genre.

Note: I might change my picks. But my top (#1) is fixed.

Tbh, 'Upgrade' shouldn't have the Horror genre. I'll replace it soon with something else. I only listed it to fill the top 10.

I agree with those that stated 10 is a bit many for a single genre, for many viewers. Perhaps Top 5 will be more realistic.

It's not too many for me though; Horror is my favourite genre and I'm sure I've seen at least 50 Horror titles from the past decade.

The last movie to actually *scare* me was The Ring (the first one) which I saw when I was 20.

After a certain age Horror movies are just not scary anymore - or at least that's the case for me.

I like Horror movies now that have lots of gore, with whodunit elements or good plot twists and WTF endings.

My "comment" on my present taste in Horror would be "Fast paced plot-twisty thrillers with gore."

The release year has to be between 01/01/2010 and 12/31/2019. It's not one of each year, but 10 within the 10 years. All ten can also be realeased in one year, if you said: "Yes that was the definite year of horror in that decade".

You don't have to watch them, if you don't want them. But then NVanKerr should accept that you don't want to see that movies. I got the fortune that my wife and me both like good horror stories, SciFi, Action, but also have differences. We don't force each other to watch what the other doesn't want to. It's extremely rare that that happens (only with a blinkin' eye). :D I like the list of NVanKerr - and the other lists. I can see that everybody had some ideas in his/her mind. If the list goes online later, it is ok for me. It wouldn't even be bad to not see this one get online. And I still think it's a good idea.

Conclusion: I don't watch horror movies to be entertained always. If they evoke the feeling of horror and create an engaging experience with that feeling throughout, then they succeed as horror films. I also like a little dark comedy thrown in as well.

I have a feeling that 2010's, being similar to 1980's in more ways than one actually will have the same problem of many great little known horror movies falling through cracks and only being discovered much later. There are already quite a few movies only gaining buzz late into 2010's despite being released midway through it...

I always feel like I underwatched its movies when the decade ends.

I mostly trust the average rating in relation to the ammount of ratings. So I discovered some really nice gems on Amz. :)
Nikolay. I'm a horror movie fan. I watch 25-50 of them each year. Sometimes more. So it really is easy for me to choose some highlights. I would have a lack of anime-knowledge of the last decade, if you asked me. ;) I couldn't write down 5 of them.
Not to mix up with animated movies. There I would know some more. ;)

Btw.: Trailers are another criterion for me to choose, if I wanna see a horror movie or not. In some trailers you can see that the production design is lousy by cam and stage. Most horror movies are not expensive. So if I see that, it has a good chance to never meet my eye. Many trailers have so much information that you can guess the fun. Others have too much information, then you have seen the movie by the trailer.

Breumaster, production design is not something entirely visible from the trailers. Nor it's something really expensive, if life-saving. Many of the horror classics are extremely low-budget, and yet overall creative approach saves them and that's not just on production design: costume design, photography, editing... Some of the most unique uses of all of those crafts are often found in horror movies, surprisingly.

And even all of that might fail if direction is weak. :)

what I wanted to say is, that I got some experience in watching trailers and guessing how the movie is. It's a minor percentage of fails. Sometimes I'm positively surprised by a movie, which trailer told me: "What an awful movie". But that's rare. In most cases, I'm right. In most trailers you can see, if they used cheap cams and if that is part of the making or not. Same for the stage setting. I can smell cheap locations. In minor percent of cases I'm wrong. If the acting looks bad in the trailer, you got a good chance that it is bad over the whole movie. If the story looks interesting, I might skip the other impressions and give it a try.

I have one in common with her for sure. For me 'Hereditary' is number one of the last decade. This suggestion is about personal prefernces in horror movies, so it's ok for me, when other say, they will never put it on their 'best' list.

Can you please remove Happy Death Day (2017) to A Quiet Place on list?

The Conjuring (2013) is of the best horror movie in 2010s. This is the Till date this is the scariest horror movie I've seen since The Exorcist (1973). James wan did a great job of creating a new horror universe. The images it offers will haunt you long after the movie is ending.

For me the 2010's have brought back the concept of fearing the unknown which I always found interesting. Growing up watching 2000's horror, I find myself having trouble remembering times where I was debating who is in the right when a scene or movie ends. I think horror in general is far more interesting when conversations are started more often than people laughing if someone jumped.
