The Romans around 100 AD. During the height of the empire under Trajan or Hadrian. Not because I think they were “better” than everyone else, but because it’s one of those societies where you can almost feel how massive and alive everything was. Roads stretching across continents, crowded markets, public baths, gladiator games, politics that were organized chaos, people speaking different languages all under one empire. It feels modern and ancient at the same time. I’d want to see what life looked like outside of the polished statues and history books. Like what did a random conversation in Rome sound like? How did ordinary people think about the empire they lived in? Did they realize they were living in what future generations would call one of the greatest civilizations ever? Also, I think seeing the contrast would hit hard. The insane engineering and organization mixed with the brutality of slavery, executions, and conquest. Human societies are never just one thing, and Rome feels like the clearest example of that.
