Live Poll: Greatest Naval Battle on Screen

Throughout history, sea power has shaped the power of nations in wartime and in peace. It's not surprising that movies featuring historic battleships and heroic naval battles were very popular in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

The war-at-sea genre has been in decline for the remainder of the 20th century, but showed a remarkable revival since 2000 with the introduction of CGI and other special effects related technology.

Which historic naval sea battle from a movie released after 2000 is your favorite?

I think "Rise of an Empire" was extremely creative in using CGI to give you a seat in a trireme cruising at high speed to ram an enemy ship.  The idea being that you could then deploy your warriors to fight a land battle to either sink or capture the enemy's vessel.  But I can't help feeling amused by the absurd over-the-top scene depicting a horse-mounted cavalry attack nimbly leaping across violently rocking water-soaked ship decks.  Still, it was fun to watch!

My vote is for The Admiral (2014). Both the movie and the battle were amazing!!

I was glad to see the Battle of Myeongnyang on the list.

The Battle of the Atlantic was really more of a campaign than a single or small cluster of related battles. I also would suggest Das Boot (1981)  as a better example of the turning of the tide or a better movie example than U-571. Battle of Leyte Gulf would be another good one to get on this list, but finding a movie to pair it with might be tough. Largest naval battles in history also cites Red Cliff (2008) as another possible candidate for your list.

Which historic naval sea battle or campaign from a movie released after 2000 is your favorite?

Really good suggestions, thanks a lot! I have added Chi bi (2008) or Red Cliff in English. Wow, I would love to see this movie.

Funny how 2 completely different movies with different titles have exactly the same names in English. Michiel de Ruyter (2015) is called Admiral (2015) in English, and Myeong-ryang (2014) is called The Admiral (2014). In my view the translators could have been a little bit more original.

I also changed the description in sea battle or campaign. Thanks for this tip. I agree with you that Das Boot (1981) is better than U-571 (2000) but to limit the scope of this poll, I have only included movies from 2000 or after. It's really difficult to find good recent examples. Maybe a remake of Sink the Bismarck! (1960) with modern CGI technology would be a good idea for a new film. Just a thought.

I agree, I also found it confusing that they both had the same name, although I  think they re-titled the Korean one The Admiral: Roaring Currents to avoid the issue. It probably says more about movie marketing than anything else, tending toward English title names being as simple as possible.

I am a fan of Naval themed movies too, especially sub movies. I had an old poll suggestion of the golden age of submariner movies and another on naval themed movies. I would agree that the genre petered out in the 60's with its heyday in the 40's and 50's. If you wish, you can extended the range to the last half century to open up some more possibilities. without treading on that so called Golden Age.

Just thinking outside the box, while technically not a battle it might qualify as a campaign is the cold war. (IE.The Cuban Missile crisis or the chess match between the superpowers for superior ships, both in numbers and technologically.) Another possibility is the D-Day landings as an amphibious assault(ie naval operation) and a movie like the Longest Day or Saving Private Ryan. Again, just spit balling some ideas, not sure if you should expand the traditional thinking on this one, but you could broaden the scope using the term Naval Engagements instead.

Again some really good ideas. Regarding the landing on D-day, what about a separate face-off suggestion "most severe shoreline battle":
