LIVE POLL: Golden Globes 2024 — Best Cinematic & Box Office Achievement

@Pencho15​ I think the award is intended to diversify the types of movies being recognized, as well as, respect differing definitions of "best". In the past, the knock on the awards was only movies that were critical darlings would be nominated or win the best picture awards. This award gives movies that were critical successes, as well as, commercial hits a chanceto be crowned best movie and focuses on the best job at balancing the two different goals.

I like the award because it better spells out how to meassure a film that is the best, rewards the difficulty of balancing both, and is not a simple declaration of the leading box office champ or the one with the highest streaming view totals. It is still a subjective choice, but with better parameters to keep everyone on the same page.

In the future years, I could see the same movie winning both awards, but in other years one movie would edge another critically, while another might win when both measures are considered. It just depends of the given pool from each year's film releases.

I agree, this year the race is clearly between Oppenheimer and Barbie. I think 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' is the weakest nominee. Its top three worldwide box office was its saving grace, but was on the inside of the nomination cusp and deserving. It was able able to counterbalance being the weakest of the eight nominees critically speaking by making a strong case commercially. 

But, I think for the most part the Golden Globes got the eight nominations right in this category based on combined critical merit, worldwide reach (total # IMDb votes ranking), and box office reciepts. It would have been hard to knock any of them out for a movie title that omitted or was sitting on the nomination bubble.

While those past best picture winning movies still could win the regular best drama or comedy category, some would be at a disadvantage when both measures have to be factored in the combined category. For instance,  there is no way 'Shakespeare In Love' would beat out 'Saving Private Ryan' in a Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, in my opinion.

Thanks, I think Barbie should win in the combined Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, in my opinion.

The deciding factors for me are Barbie receiving more total nominations at the early awards ceremonies (and will receive more upcoming predicted nominations according to goldderby.com), its having higher worldwide (almost a third more) and North American (almost double) domestic box office totals by far, and the title generating more buzz upon release than Oppenheimer. In contrast, Oppenheimer likely scores higher in vote totals and ratings with more hardcore movie fans based on IMDb vote totals. While, Barbie may have more appeal to more casual movie goers. Critics and cinephiles seem to favor Oppenheimer, as it is probably the better film in terms of critical acclaim alone.
