Live Poll: Favorite PG-Rated Box Office Smash Movie

PG-13 ratings are considered the "sweet spot" of movie marketing, sandwiched between the also lucrative PG and R ratings. But, PG rated movies are decidedly pretty great too, representing the second largest segment of the five M.P.A.A. ratings. The two together, PG-13 and PG represent 90% of the all-time total domestic box office. Which of these movies,* currently PG-rated and having a worldwide box office of over $500 million, is your favorite film? * limit two movies per franchise and IMDb 7.0+ rated

When you adjust it for ticket inflation, that chart changes pretty drastically. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/...
Picking out the top 35 highest grossing films rated PG and adjust to allow for ticket inflation in that source , the list reads as: (The adjusted gross shown.)
1 - Gone with the Wind $1,786,074,500
2 - Star Wars (the original title to "A New Hope".) - $1,574,577,200
3 - E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - $1,253,992,300
4 - Jaws - $1,132,216,800
5 - Doctor Zhivago - $1,097,357,400
6 - The Empire Strikes Back - $867,916,800
7 - Return of the Jedi - $867,916,800
8 - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace - $798,358,700
9 - The Sting - $788,022,900
10 - Raiders of the Lost Ark - $782,576,800
11 - The Graduate - $756,499,100
12 - Grease - $680,407,700
13 - Thunderball* - $661,232,000
14 - Ghostbusters (1984) - $629,175,700
15 - Shrek 2 - $628,090,200
16 - Love Story - $618,783,600
17 - Home Alone - $598,770,300
18 - Goldfinger* - $586,092,000
19 - American Graffiti - $580,914,300
20 - The Towering Inferno - $542,560,900
21 - Back to the Future - $522,007,800
22 - Superman - $507,045,800
23 - Beauty and the Beast (2017) - $504,014,165
24 - Tootsie - $503,030,800
25 - Smokey and the Bandit - $502,403,100
26 - Finding Dory - $496,437,500
27 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - $494,270,700
28 - Close Encounters of the Third Kind - $491,287,800
29 - Lawrence of Arabia ** - $489,590,600
30 - Rocky - $486,553,400
31 - The Poseidon Adventure - $485,333,300
32 - The Bridge on the River Kwai ** - $480,896,000
33 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - $473,230,100
34 - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones - $472,661,300
?? - House of Wax - rated as "GP"(???) - $446,702,100
35 - Rear Window (1954) - $445,135,900

* unbelievable! 007 James Bond films being rated as "PG"? Especially after how Masterson gets killed covered in with the gold paint in "Goldfinger"? That is hard to believe. But I saw it with my own eyes as I was going through the list! I know that "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball" were rated ether "M" or "R" when they were initially released because the nudity, Bond's bedroom scenes, and the violence. How times have changed! Even "The Pirates Of The Caribbean" movies got the PG-13 rated and they have less nudity than the two Bonds films and has the same amount of violence!

** The same comment as I said about Bond. This should have gotten at least a PG -13 rating. The violence is graphic and realistically portrayed.

About nine of these thirty-five qualified for the list, I changed the parameters upping the box office $500 million, but making it worldwide. I got a better mix, but wanted to get your top ten in, but five still just missed the cut coming in between $400m-$500m range in non-inflation adjusted box office: Gone with the Wind, Jaws, Doctor Zhivago,  The Sting and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

1 - Gone with the Wind $1,786,074,500
2 - Star Wars (the original title to "A New Hope".) - $1,574,577,200
3 - E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - $1,253,992,300

The BoxOfficeMojo list for Top Grossing PG films adjusted for estimated ticket sales is even more radically different that the one I stated and the one that is the topic of this page.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/...
Correction, it is almost the same as the one that I had mention except with a few changes in the films on the bottom of the list.

A belated comment the first list is for all ratings by adjusted gross, the second list is for estimated ticket sales for just PG rated movies, which would be the same as adjusted gross.  Yes, it changes the list dramatically Beauty and the Beast (2017)  56,798,200 tickets sold drops from #1 in today's dollars to #21 in inflation adjusted dollars for all movies that are rated PG today. Jaws and the Bond films were rated R when they came out fifty years, but have been resubmitted for re-rating with little or no edits and gotten there rating lowered to PG. What was shocking then isn't as shocking today in the eyes of the MPAA.

I like the spicier PG version over the PG-13 and G rated versions, too.

My Vote: Up

Hey, Urbane why don't you try to make one list for animated movies and another for non-animated.

Thanks, I do like the suggestion, it is definitely worth looking into.

Update:
There are 16 animated PG titles in the top 111 movies of all-time domestic box office, enough to split the poll. I don't like the fact that almost half are just from two franchises alone; as all three Shrek movies and all four Despicable Me movies made the list. I am going to leave at it is for the meantime, if this doesn't get published in the next few years, I will look into further and see if I expand the threshold, if I get a better mix of movies.
