I guess you have seen "Tough Guys" where he and Bert Lancaster both kept up their tough guy image and played it up for laughs.

Yes, great fun film and perfect casting of the pair in the leads. I am not surprised it is one his best remembered roles, even though he has so many great roles among his 90 or so films. You comment made me think of how well it stands up against the more modern old-guy heist films like The Maiden Heist (2009), Going in Style (2017) and others.
