Great poll suggestion! I'm torn and both Die Hard and Batman Returns are season musts for me, at one point or another. :)

"Strange Christmas" is another compilation that pushes the boundaries of the Christmas movie genre. Not surprisingly, Die Hard and Gremlins are the hardest to sneak by someone. But, I noticed a lot of these other listed titles have been getting airplay on cable during the holiday season too.

Believe it or not, you may want to try researching this subject by searching favorite Christmas movie by state. Each year, business insider publishes a list of most favorite or most viewed Christmas movie by each state. This year “Gremlins” was the number one movie and “Die Hard”, “The Apartment”, “Edward Sissorhands”, “Batman Returns”, “While You Were Sleeping”, and “Trading Places” were also on those lists. https://www.google.com/amp/s/brobible...

Not on those lists are “Die Hard 2: Die Harder”, “Love Actually”, “Donovan’s Reef”, “Joyeaux Noel” and “Krampus” (Yeah, while talking about this subject, you got to include horror movies set at Christmas time which “Gremlins” is also.)
May I suggest a movie that was set at Easter time but has so much snow in it that it minds as we’ll be a Christmas movie? “Rise Of The Guardians”
- The Star (Sony’s Animated movie about the the story of the nativity as told through the eyes of the animals.)

As to holiday horror, Peaspot has an Existing Scary Christmas Poll and I made a general holiday horror poll suggestion, PS: The Holidays Can Be Scary, So Can Their Movies. I have Krampus listed as an option among the seven Christmas Horror titles in that answer pool.

Thanks, for the observations and notes. I too thought The Star (2017) and Rise of the Guardians (2012) were innovative spins on the normal holiday films that seem to be a bit repetitive.

The state list is interesting as you see some regional patterns, like The Nightmare Before Christmas plays well throughout the Southwest and Elf seems particularly strong in the Midwest as does Christmas Vacation in the Plains states.

Awesome poll idea!

It's A Wonderful Life is the best actual movie on the list, but Die Hard's taking place at Christmas is classic-ly funny, for some reason.

As for other random comments (BTW, these are not a reflection on your poll choices, just comments), Rocky 4's Christmas element is very out of place and a bit... stupid?
While You Were Sleeping's Christmas inclusion is quite pointless.

I suggest The Long Kiss Goodnight, I believe it's called.  I think that took place a Christmas.

Anyway, good luck and hope this becomes a poll!

BTW, dgranger, hilarious state by state map!  Thanks for posting that!

Thanks, I agree It's A Wonderful Life is one of my favorite too. It seems to have become a Christmas movie after the fact, as it wasn't released/promoted as a Christmas movie (Release Dates), other than NY/LA premiere in 1946 that preceded the January 1947 release. All these movies, landed on multiple alternative Christmas movie lists to be included.

By definition, a movie not primarily about Christmas, but the holiday remains inter-wowen into the movie nonetheless is a tough juggling act. Some of the movie are bit clear-cut than others on this point. The most subtle use is I Am Legend (2007) which in real-time and flashback uses the holiday to contrast with the plague evacuation and post-apocalyptic aftermath by setting both in mid-December. Very sneaky, indeed.

The first time I saw It's a Wonderful Life I actually didn't like it.  But after a second viewing years later, I enjoyed it much more.

I wound up watching The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks, on Christmas eve. Such intriguing timing (or perhaps awkward). This is the film adaptation of a novel with a fictional story predicated around addressing Mary Magdalene and what might be considered a multi-century "coverup" by the principal decision-making offices of the Roman Catholic Church as well as adversaries thereof.

Odd, I watched the same movie last night. I hadn't seen it a while either.  I get the  back door Christmas connection. It seems a bit a stretch and not as obvious as some others to make the final answer pool. I do appreciate the suggestion.

"The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996) has been a favorite for me for decades now, Samantha Caine is a school-teacher and single mother, who has no actual memory of her life prior to a mysterious murder attempt, eight years ago. She has been trying to find out about her past for years.

After a Christmas-time car accident and a concussion, Samantha finds herself possessing surprising combat skills and emerging memories from another personality. Samantha is an alias for Charlene Elizabeth "Charly" Baltimore,  a CIA assassin who was reported missing eight years ago. And Charly has information on a criminal conspiracy within the CIA.  Planning false-flag operations, blaming them on Islamist terrorists, and securing increased funding and political influence for the CIA.

Part of the fun in the film is the contrasting perspectives of the sweet, maternal Samantha and the ruthless and lethal Charly.
