2024's Maria was the last film in Pablo Larraín 's unofficial trilogy focused on iconic women of the 20th Century. Each film in the trilogy, which also includes Jackie and Spencer, focuses on a concrete moment in the lives of each woman and seeks to explore their complexities and the struggles that shaped their lives. Although Larraín said he never intended the films to be connected, they share aesthetic and tone similarities which has made them to be considered as a trilogy and they all earned many award nominations and praise for their lead actresses, Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart and Angelina Jolie.
