Live Poll: Best Film About the Arthurian Legend

Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017) is not the first movie about the legendary British leader who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defense of Britain against Saxon invaders in the late 5th and early 6th centuries AD.

King Arthur, Camelot, the wizard Merlin, Lancelot, Arthur's wife Guinevere, the sword Excalibur, the Knights of the Round Table, these are some of the ingredients of the popular legend.

What is your favorite film about the Arthurian Legend?

I have seen a lot of these movies and love them too but I also know that some of them are set in Arthurian times and are not about King Arthur. What makes it harder to choose is the knowledge that the story of Lancelot's love affair with Qwen is a purely fictional romance written over 100 years after the King Arthur Legend was first set down to paper in "Mort d' Arthur ". What a hard problem to choose.
With all it's problems with the Lancelot storyline "Camelot".
May I suggest "The Mists Of Avalon", http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244353/?... ? It is a feminist take on the King Arthur legend by telling the story of the women in the King Arthur tale.

Actually thank you to you. You got me looking up films along the lines of Merlin since the King Arthur and Merlin can't be seperated., and I found this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6735670/ King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (2017). It is likely rated, a 4.7, but the plot summary sounds fresh and interesting. - modern day descendants of King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table have to come together with what they are in order to fight the return of Morganna.

The Mists of Avalon (2001 - ) is indeed great. I even have the DVD at home. I bought it years ago. The only problem is that it's labeled a "TV Mini-Series", and if I allow this one, I would have to include other TV series such as Merlin (1998 - ), Merlin's Apprentice (2006 - ), etc. What do you think?

regardless whether it was on tv or not, i would say it's still a film, rather than episodic television...

@leavey_2 , as you pointed out, Merlin (1998) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130414/ should definitely not be missing in the list :) . Based on rating, it would share 3-th place ...

Very few Arthurian films are any good at all, for some reason. I maintain a great fondness for George Romero's 1981 clunky but effective--and affecting--Knightriders, about a modern reenactment group that tells the story on motorcycles...and doesn't realize that they're actually reliving the story themselves.

One of my favorite 'Arthurian' stories isn't a movie:

I voted Excalibur 1981 because it is the most accurate depiction of the deeply spiritual teachings and archetypes contained in the original story.  This is not just a story, it is a profound spiritual teaching much like other famous stories. A way of giving these archetypes and esoteric principals to humanity, which are real and exist inside us all, through the ray of art, in the form of a story.  Its a hard movie to watch in the beginning especially due to the movie reflecting the chaotic state of Camelot (which represents our inner 'country') in the beginning of the spiritual work.

Very true. I think The Mists of Avalon is another movie about the Arthurian Legend that contains some very powerful spiritual teachings.
