Live Poll: A Quotable French Classic Named "Ridicule"

Ridicule is one of my all-time favorite French movies, its international tag-line says : "Wit the ultimate weapon" while in French, it is : "Ridiculousness can kill". Both got it right.

In a nutshell, this is the story of a poor French lord who, in order to get royal backing must learn to play the games of wit at Versailles' court. But I like one IMDb user's description better : "In the periwigged and opulent France of Louis XVI, an unwitting nobleman soon discovers that survival at court demands both a razor wit and an acid tongue." Indeed, one good word can open the doors, one too many can shut them down forever.

Being a fan of quotes-related polls, I couldn't resist, for this is probably one of the wittiest and smartest screenplays ever written full of one-liners and witty quotes you could use in social occasions. All the quotes from the film that were not lost in translation, are featured in this list, I hope you'll have a good read before voting and that this poll will make you want to see the film.

Which of these "Ridicule" quotes is your favorite?

I suggested this 3 years but it didn't do well, there were 12 more quotes that were totally lost in translation and the ones I kept needed a serious rewriting, I hope all these quotes now sound witty and smart in Shakespeare's language. Did my best!

"Why not go to a brothel? The good company there isn't bad and the "bad company" is... excellent."

ElM,

So many great quotations, it's hard to choose. My current favorite:
"We're judged by the company we keep.
- And we're wrong, Monsieur. Judas kept excellent company
."

Dammit, I just learned that French actor (and legend) Jean Rochefort passed away, before I knew him as an actor, he was a big part of my childhood:

Very sad news...

What a great poll! There are so many great quotes that I can't decide which one gets my vote. The intro. is so informative and eloquent, too. If you want any suggested grammatical edits, following are jus three little ones:

Ridicule is one of my all-time favorite French movies; its international tag-line says : "Wit the ultimate weapon" while in French, it is : "Ridiculousness can kill". Both got it right. (after "movies," a semi-colon instead of a comma)
...

(a comma after "written," but no comma after "translation")

Oh, and yes, this poll definitely makes me want to see the film! :)

Thanks ruby, I fixed them and a few other typos you didn't notice, I must be a comma dyslexic, sometimes I re-read my reviews and found the commas so out of place, they're placed when they shouldn't, sometimes they're not even put... it's a very 'comma' mistake :) but annoying!

I'm sure you can find it easily, it was nominated for Best Foreign Language film, it must be available somewhere. It's a real good movie, and a good story, wit and one-liners put aside.
