JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 20)

Simply a follow up to MyCatDuffyTookMyLaptop's great post. Possible notification glitches aside, the thread is long in tooth. We could use a new volume for this long running tradition.

So? What was the last film (feature or short), TV series (full or miniseries), etc... you consumed?

Whistle (2025/6) - Final Destination fanfiction with decent production quality and competent young actors that still just didn't work. 5/10

@NYVKE

That's also what I thought first.  But at the end it's with AI, which isn't in 'Minority Report' All in all the movies are are somewhat similar, even though not the same.

My critic about that movie would be more like:

What would a normal guy do who hasn't all the ties to the police, colleagues and so on? That guy will really be f***ed up. The protagonist has all these ties in a well-coordinated team. A guy from streat hasn't. Scr*w*d!

Another aspect is: Why the F... 90 minutes? If he had a week for it, it would still be unfair. That seems like a compliant, malicious, and unjust execution-based justice. Roland Freisler handled things in a similar way in the Third Reich. But even Sophie Scholl had 4 days for to build up defense for the unfair court of law then. She still was executed. But 90 minutes? Really? That's effective to get rid of "a problem".

At the end, it was still, over large stretches, a highly thrilling and entertaining film that also had a pretty good pace.

Yes, that's the theme in all of the movies you listed in your poll. (Although Gattaca does not really fit the poll with respect to law enforcement, but anyway)

.Structural evil rather than malicious evil. Optimisation taken to the extreme. Like Oracle firing 30,000 employees to redirect to investment in A.I.

And yes, in both Minority Report and Mercy the protagonist is someone who knows the system, worked in the system, has the investigative skills and some loyal / semi-loyal personal contacts.

Joe Public is f*cked.

In Gattaca, the justice system made things easy for itself by excluding people from the outset simply because their genetics didn’t fit. The constant genetic testing of all sorts of things makes every person in that scenario completely transparent - no one can hide.

In that sense, the system is fascist in its preemptive curtailment of civil rights, and the investigators have it easy because every day there are multiple samples of genetic material available.

It’s not a perfect analogy, I admit. But no one complained about it, otherwise I would have removed it. ;)

@Breumaster

I would have complained, but it went live before I could.

Anyway, Gattaca is an excellent sci-fi dystopia film in terms of its exploration of eugenics and other themes.

One of my all time favourite films. Top 20.

So it's all good.

Allegro non troppo (1976): A very generous 5/10. Walt Disney need not worry about this raunchy parody of Fantasia.

The Most Terrible Time in My Life (1993): 8/10.

Project Hail Mary (2026) [IMAX]: 7/10.

The Drama (2026): 7/10.

Fantasy Life (2025): 7/10.

There were some Disney movies in the late 80s and the early 2000s I did like pretty much. Such as The Little Mermaid, Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. And of course the ones like Robin Hood, The Jungle Book, Aristocats, Snowwhite and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, ... I also did like movies like Mr. Brisby, from Don Bluth, a former Disney employee.We have a similar taste , when I look at these movie-ratings you stated.

@Breumaster I'm glad. Two of them are rewatchs of films I saw as a kid, but since I hadn't rated them I decided to watch them again so I could give my vote at IMDb.
