JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 20)

Simply a follow up to MyCatDuffyTookMyLaptop's great post. Possible notification glitches aside, the thread is long in tooth. We could use a new volume for this long running tradition.

So? What was the last film (feature or short), TV series (full or miniseries), etc... you consumed?

I can't believe "Straw" did not have a theatrical release, Taraji Henson's performance is Oscar worthy :( 8/10

All the movies below seen at the cinema: Sorry, Baby (2025): 8/10; In the Mood for Love (2000): 4k rerelease/rewatch: 10/10. Included a never-before-screened short, In the Mood for Love (2001). To a Land Unknown (2024): 5/10. Think of an immigrant story, but in the vein Of Mice and Men, where both main characters are Lennie Small (but not in a good, endearing way). Superman (2025): 8/10. Ballerina (2025): 7/10. Cloud (2024): 8/10. This coming Sunday: a rerelease of Hundreds of Beavers (2022) - never seen before.

I saw it and think it's great! Far from mainstream. It's a kind of slapstick and cartoon mixup, shown in hard b/w contrasts. There is not much gray between white and black.

Amélie (2001) - On a whim, I saw it on a Monday and took the day off due to a doctor's appointment: 9/10 (dropped from 10/10 rating). Sink Your Teeth: A Tokyo Ghoul Celebration: Worst anime experience at a movie theater. Poorly chopped up speed run through the first season. 3/10. Folktales (documentary 2025): 9/10. Summer Wars (2009) 4k release: rewatch still at 10/10. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) - IMAX: 8/10. Together (2025): 9/10. The Bad Guys 2 (2025) - 3D: 8/10. Souleymane's Story (2024): 5/10. The Naked Gun (2025): 7/10. Tonight: Boys Go to Jupiter (2024): 8/10. Tomorrow: Weapons (2025) Sunday: Hola Frida (2024) - rewatch though I'm not sure if it will be the English dub or the original Spanish cast.

Hola Frida (2024): English dub - 9/10 whereas the original version I saw earlier this year was a 10/10. Weapons (2025): 9/10 Timecop (1994): 2/10 for the movie; 10/10 for the "live" Rifftrax commentary and short It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley (documentary 2025): 7/10 The Boy and the Beast (2015) 4k restoration: 10/10 rewatch Good Boy (2025): 9/10

The Glassworker(2024): A Studio Ghibli film if you bought it on Temu. I could be more forgiving of the terrible animation and tepid character design, but the dialogue, story, and side characters were really bad. Rating it a 4/10. Sadly, it met my expectations as I wasn't hopeful after seeing the trailer. One of the first times, I spotted the atrocious animation walking cycle. And though the score was quite lovely, it was obvious they cribbed it all from the Joe Hisaishi playbook. Almost as if they prompted an AI chatbot to just give them a Joe Hisaishi score.

Believe it or not "I'm Still Here" last year's winner of Oscar for best Foreign Film. It was fantastic.

Not a good weekend for movies. The Woman in Cabin 10 (2025) - 4/10 Summer Camp (2024) - 4/10 (Diane Keaton last film)

@Pecho15 I was very disappointed with "The Woman In Cabin 10". Keira Knightley gave a great performance as always, but the plot and execution were pathetic. Guy Pearce was atypically lacklustre. David Ajala was himself, as per usual. 5/10

I agree it had a good premise, but it didn't deliver at all. And I found the ending completely unbelievable.

Mine was a near perfect weekend for movies. Went to see A House of Dynamite at the Netflix owned theater, the Paris Theater on Friday: a riveting 10/10. The only flaw was Tron: Ares on 3D IMAX. Pretty solid music score for a mostly meh watch. A 6/10. And on Sunday? A sports anime film, 100 Meters. I'm not a particular fanatic of track and field but this was an absolutely amazing animated watch. A 10/10. Two of these movies will likely be in my top 10 favorite of from this year.

Christ. A House of Dynamite - Let's make a quarter movie shown from 3 differet perspectives to make a point that people are incompetent and expensive tech is useless. 3/10 + 2 points for some good acting.

The Smashing Machine (2025) - 6/10, I was expecting better. T-Men (1947) - 5/10, it didn't help my DVD had no subtitles so I missed some details. Caramelo (2025) - 4/10, just another formulaic streaming movie.

'Den stygge stesøsteren' aka 'The Ugly Stepsister': https://www.imdb.com/title/tt29344903/ That's a very bad non-rated turn-around alternative Cinderella story from point of view of the competetive sister who is the stepsister in this story. Brutal, gruel, bloody and mean. In deed one of the meanest films I saw in last times. It's a Norwegian, Polish and Swedish co-production that is unique in re-telling an old tale in an alternate version. For the idea and the execution I give it a 7/10. Beware: Don't watch if you can't cope with violent scenes. The cover tells you something. If you know the story ... I coped with it, but it was very harsh!

P.S.: It is also a cautionary finger pointed at society’s beauty obsession.
