JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 20)

Simply a follow up to MyCatDuffyTookMyLaptop's great post. Possible notification glitches aside, the thread is long in tooth. We could use a new volume for this long running tradition.

So? What was the last film (feature or short), TV series (full or miniseries), etc... you consumed?

Don't Look Up (2021)

Not sure how I missed this gem.

I would rate it among my all time top 20 films, and #1 comedic film.

9/10

Mark Rylance's performance and there mere fact that the movie is satire are the only things particularly amusing about Don't Look Up. Even though I like satire, this one just didn't turn out to be my cup of tea.

A Complete Unknown (2024): Bloody wow! 10/10. Edward Norton and Timothee Chalamet give their career best performances. Edward Norton's Seeger is one of my favorite performances from 2024.

Yesterday:

The Last Showgirl (2024): I'm being generous at 6/10. Neither Pamela Anderson nor Jamie Lee Curtis really deserves their SAG nominations.

Today:

The Room Next Door (2024): One of the best scores from last year (not a surprise from a Pedro Aldomovar film). Great acting (also not a surprise) from Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. But the film slipped with its awkward dialogue (that could have been the transition from Spanish to English). 8/10.

Rewatch of season one, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (2017):

10/10. Finally getting around to season 2.

Star Trek: Section 31

The most atrocious thing in the history of Star Trek.

I'd rather watch Madame Web for 24 hours on repeat.

Emilia Pérez - 4/10,  Sorry but this is not a good movie and all the subplot with the relationship with her sons and her wife make little or no sense.  Many in Mexico have criticized it and they are right, this movie treats a serious and sensitive topic for my country in a completely shallow and insensitive way.

Linda - 5/10, boring.

@Pencho15

Yet another dud for 2024.

I'm about your age, and I can't recall a year that has had so many highly hyped, big budget etc duds as 2024.

It's my second lowest rated year, after 2020 (Covid year).

If I have the time I will make a poll about this. If not, anyone is encouraged to steal the idea.

Yesterday: Sister Midnight (2024): 10/10. It would be criminal if the Independent Spirit Awards doesn't nominate this for a metric ton of categories. This afternoon: Part one of the Oslo Trilogy - Love (2024): 9/10.

Last weekend: Jane Austen Wrecked My Life (2024), 8/10. Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025), 8/10. Friday: Shall We Dance? (1996), technically a rewatch. Technically not a rewatch as it was the director's cut. 9/10. The director and the lead actress, Tamiyo Kusakari (who was also married the director after the movie came out), were both present for a Q and A. Susan Sarandon was there and was called out by the movie theater liaison for a "cameo" in the Q and A because she was in the remake. ~~ Saturday: Lost in Starlight (2025), 9/20. Today: The Phoenician Scheme (2025), 9/10.

Juneteenth: Elio (2025), 3D: 9/10. I hope this one has similar box office legs like Elemental (2023). It certainly doesn't deserve to bomb at the box office. Friday: KPop Demon Hunters (2025)—seen at the Quad as it's already streaming on Netflix. 8/10. What keeps it from being a 9 or 10/10 is that it speedruns through many plot beats as if it should have been a 12-episode miniseries instead of a feature-length film. Today: 28 Years Later (2025), 8/10. The zombie kills with its high-tech iPhone cinematography, which looks like a visual gimmick from a PS2 console.
