JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 20)

Simply a follow up to MyCatDuffyTookMyLaptop's great post. Possible notification glitches aside, the thread is long in tooth. We could use a new volume for this long running tradition.

So? What was the last film (feature or short), TV series (full or miniseries), etc... you consumed?

Last Sunday:

Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds (2023): 8/10. Though I wish I got to see the original French language film instead of the English dub.

Tried to watch Warehouse 13 because it's free and no ads on Amazon Prime and I don't have to worry about watching a series like this on a work computer. In the past, I've been watching House MD on the platform.

I've only seen a few episodes of Warehouse 13. It has some charm. But the writing and humor can be painfully sitcomish and to a painful fault. Given up after the second season finale. I'll be kind and rate the series a 6/10.

Now diving into the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. I must have watched all of the miniseries and some of the following series but am not sure when I stopped watching the main series as I know I never finished watching it.

I thought Warehouse 13 was fun, gave it an 8.

But that was 10-15 years ago, maybe I would find it corny now.

@NYVKE It still has some decent moments. Hence, I made it through the first season. For me? It pales in comparison to its older sister series, Eureka. A series I rewatched several times over the years. And relatively recently at that.

@Tsarstepan

Looking forward to that, with Winona and Keaton returning and Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe joining the cast.

Last night:

A special screening of The Wild Robot (2024). 7/10

A wonderfully animated film. Quite funny. But they needed to take a page from Pixar or Studio Ghibli. There was some unnecessary action scenes and an introduction of a villain well past the halfway point? What a letdown.

Lupita Nyong'o and the director, Chris Sanders were there for a Q and A.

Dan Da Dan: First Encounter (2024): Technically, they're classifying it as a movie. But it's three episodes of Dandadan. But I won't be counting it in my top ten films from this year. Which is somewhat depressing that my two favorite IPs this year aren't movie but animes.

This and Delicious in Dungeon (2024) AKA Dungeon Meshi. Where I don't see anything topping Dungeon Meshi. It's absolute perfection. Perfect slice of life comedy. And despite the freakish tonal flipping? Some of the best character chemistry and character motivation I've seen in anything in the past year.

Hopefully, there are a few movies remaining in this year that will positively surprise me.

It's pretty likely this is the shortest feature film I've ever seen in a movie theater.

Look Back (2024): 10/10. The best film of 2024 so far.

Monday:

Bocchi the Rock! Re: (2024): A recap of half of the first season of Bocchi the Rock! in a movie format. If I hadn't had to work Tuesday and the doubleheader screening wasn't almost 3 hours long starting at 8PM? I would have watched Bocchi the Rock! Re: Re: (2024).

Today (after a doctor's appointment and the rest of the day off to myself):

The Outrun (2024): 8/10. I can easily see Saoirse Ronan deserves the Oscar buzz for this one.

and

My Old Ass (2024): 9/10. This one is prime to do well in the (sigh) Golden Globes comedy categories. But thankfully the Film Independent Spirit Awards (especially Maisy Stella).

Quite solid weekend

Julius Caesar (1953)

Le comte de Monte-Cristo (2024)

The Substance (2024) - This one could be a point better, but I found the epilogue absurd, disgusting and unnecessary, up until that point it was really great.

The Great Escaper (2023)
