JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 20)

Simply a follow up to MyCatDuffyTookMyLaptop's great post. Possible notification glitches aside, the thread is long in tooth. We could use a new volume for this long running tradition.

So? What was the last film (feature or short), TV series (full or miniseries), etc... you consumed?

Dune: Part Two (2024) (4/10)

😑vastly overrated

1-Paul and Chani romance looks like a hallmark film or a perfume ad (depending on the moment) It is full of clichés and cringy lines.

2-The conflict between the Messiah camp and the sceptic camp is caricatural. It is laughable.

3-The political machinations are never interesting in the film because of these scenes are explanatory.

4-So many actors and so few great performances.

5-Pretty, but bland artistic decisions. No ambitious take on any subject.

To me, David Lynch's Dune remains the best version. I know it is an unpopular take.

"To me, David Lynch's Dune remains the best version. I know it is an unpopular take." I've not yet even seen Part Two of the recent readaptation, and I doubt that I'll wind up finding disagreement in such an unpopular take. The thing is, there were just so many things that the audience and David Lynch himself found unsatisfactory in the earliest adaptation, and for such a very long movie, the plot oddly always felt a bit rushed. Some fans have suggested a remaster or director's cut, but Lynch won't do it.

Second weekend (official last weekend of the festival) - NYICFF (New York International Children's Film Festival).

Dounia and the Great North: two episodes smashed into one from the second season of Dounia (2020- ). 8/10.

Swimming with Wings (2024 - animated short): 9/10.

Double header:

Magic Candies (2023 - world premiere): Technically cannot rate as there's literally no current IMDb page. 10/10. This could very well be the front runner for next year's Animated Short Film Oscar.

and

The Klutzy Witch: Fuka and the Witch of Darkness (2023), 5/10.

Head in the Clouds (2023 - animated short): 9/10. Also no IMDb page.

4. The Holdovers (2023) (4/10)

5. Red Rooms (2023) (5/10)

13) Vampire Humaniste Cherche Suidicaire Consentant (4/10) (2023)

I watched films 5 to 13 has part of the Prix Collegial du cinema quebecois. The film that are included in the list above, but not in the poll published a few days ago are short films. Also, I have not included Geographies of Solitude (2023) in the list above, because I watched it a year ago outside the context of the award. The rating I gave it is 9/10, it is by far the greatest film of the competition in my opinion.

To be brief, it is mediocre, it says nothing about politics nor journalism. It is a thriller in the vein of Children of Men, the last sequence resembles Zero Dark Thirty. The Children of Men is probably the better comparison because Zero Dark Thirty is deeper than Civil War. If you liked those films, you will probably like it, but the negative reviews are justified, the film is shallow.

People credit this film way too much than deserved for being apolitical. The film is not apolitical, the president is a pure and simple fascist. It is very clear that he is the bad guy. But, it is true that Republicans and Democrats are not mentioned in the film. To me, that is more cowardice in order to avoid controversy than anything else.

But, often, our opinions on films vastly differs. Perhaps, you will like it.

Thanks.

Children of Men was a snoozefest IMO, and a grossly over rated film.

I have not seen Zero Dark Thirty.

Ripley (2024) (rating pending)

It is literally been 2 years since I last saw a TV series. Wednesday disappointed me beyond belief. I was not a fan of TV series, but that thing put the nail in the coffin.

I tried the first episode of Ripley. It is not that bad so far. It is kind of subtle for a TV series. A rare quality. Let's see if the other episodes are good. That is the trick with TV series. Often, the first episode is good, and the rest is utter garbage. It is a reality that is not so well represented by IMDB because people who watch/rate all episodes typically already like the show.

I think TV series peaked in the ~2007-2017 period.

Just started Fallout, not impressed.

5/10 for the snoozefest that was Constellation.

6/10 for the almost as bad 3 Body Problem; extra point for more interesting and likeable characters.

I retracted my comments on Fallout S1.

It picked up VERY nicely around the 4th Episode - 8½ / 10

The Menu (2022) Review (5/10)

Goods:

Moments of humor add lightness to the film
Ralph Fiennes delivers a commendable performance
Bads:

Subpar acting from most of the cast
Characters feel clichéd and lack depth
Criticism presented is conventional and lacks innovation
Satirical elements fail to make a significant impact
Some scenes feel unoriginal, predictable, and devoid of humor
Overall message is disappointing and lacks depth

It seems the film serves as a larger analogy for cinema rather than a commentary on the culinary scene. Many of its arguments can easily be paralleled with the world of cinema.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)

The 1st installment of this Star Wars derivative had its charm, but this film was a lazily written poorly executed dud. 4/10

This weekend. Saturday:

At the Japan Society, Bumpkin Soup (1985) AKA The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl. I'm being quite generous only because it was so weird and at some points enjoyable. A super rare 5/10.

Sunday:

At Netflix's Paris Theater, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009): rewatch, still a 10/10.

2024 is looking like it might be a worse year for movies than even 1 CE (1 Covid Era aka 2020). - at least in the genres that interest me; Thriller, Sci Fi, Horror, Mystery etc.

I have only rated 14 movies of 2½ hours+ length 8+

of them were directed by your buddy Christopher Nolan.

Up to a certain point, I think we all avoid longs films. I have seen 180 longer than 2h30, but only 1 longer than 4h00. I have a my collection a film called Satantango, it is 7h20 long, I have not watched it yet. Own a streaming service to which I am suscribed, there is a 10h25 long film. I'm not opposed to filmmaker making long films. But, at one point, it becomes hard with someone with a job, a wife, and children to watch a 10h25 film and get proper sleep too. I have nor job, nor wife, nor children. I only go to school, and I cannot figure out how I would have time to watch such a long film in a single sitting.

Tl;DR I do not see how I could fit watching a 4 Hours + film in a single day.

Some maniacs at the Toronto Film Festival scheduled the 10h25 film called (Evolution of a Filipino Family) with only a 10 minute intermission.
