JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 20)

Simply a follow up to MyCatDuffyTookMyLaptop's great post. Possible notification glitches aside, the thread is long in tooth. We could use a new volume for this long running tradition.

So? What was the last film (feature or short), TV series (full or miniseries), etc... you consumed?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

MCU still (mostly) going strong after 15 years.

7½ / 10

(Edit: One thing... why wasn't Gamora 2014(b) taken by the TVA like Loki 2012(b) was???)

I've not yet seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but as I understand it, the Time Variance Authority always has an overwhelming caseload. Usually this means that captives won't benefit from a "timely" hearing, but maybe some variances slip through the cracks, going "momentarily" completely unnoticed. Isn't time all convoluted anyway? Seems like there are all manners of characters who spend a lot of time out of place.

La maman et la putain (1973) (9/10)

Longest film I have watched in theater. And, also one of the best.

@ElMaruecan82

I do not know if you are still active, but I wanted to share an interesting news story in my province that relates to a comment you made a while back on Ruben Östlund's film The Square (2017). It must have been after I saw his other Palme d'Or winning film Triangle of Sadness (2022), a film I did not like.

Anyway, recently, a controversial Mexican artist called Silverio performed at a music festival. Long story, short he kissed two festival-goers against their consent during his performance. The festival-goers (a man and a woman) who were outraged, complained to the organizers of the festival about the agression. Silverio's performance was interrupted. Apologies were issued, etc. It reminded me of a scene you described in The Square (2017). A scene in which a circus actor, imitating a monkey, tried raping a woman as part of his art performance (only to be beaten up by other guests afterwards). I think I complained that Ruben Ostlund's example was exaggerated and unrealistic. At the light of the incident I just described to you, I think I was wrong. Ruben Ostlund's example is not so far-fetched, it nearly happened in my own province a couple of days ago, and the response of the story's protagonist was similar to the one depicted in Ostlund's films. I might have to give Ostlund a little more credit, his films even though they are satires accurately depicts real issues.

As attributed to Mark Twain, "Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn't." In other words, 'tis because fiction has to be believable. Anyway, I've come to realize that art imitates life far more often than life imitates art. Some of the most outrageous social/crime/war scenarios presented in literature and cinema are variations of things that have happened multiple times throughout the eons. Also, maybe nothing is true, and maybe everything is permitted. Like just because something is factual doesn't mean that it isn't misleading.

The Flash (2023)

Ezra Miller is irritating. Michael Keaton & Sasha Calle are really good.

The One (2001) - I felt for a fast paced, mindless action flick. This sated that craving, 6/10

Entergalactic (2022), 9/10. I have no problem with it getting an animated Emmy nomination despite being a movie and not a TV series.

I am embarassed to say that Christopher Nolan's film, Oppenheimer, is really good. So, I was wrong. And, I guess that my old username still checks out. I watched it in 70mm IMAX. Despite not having the best seat (front row), I really enjoyed the film. It might be one of Nolan's greatest.

Note 1:  Clearly, the sole purpose of the R-rating was to show Florence Pugh's clevage. It had nothing to do with the subject being "dramatic" because there are not much graphic scenes in the film.

Note 2: Barbie fans, you can wear rose if you want, but do not block the corridor taking pictures.

That good? (oppeheimer?)

Should I leave my self-imposed house arrest and go see it; or wait for VOD, lol?

Feck no! You monster!

I'm being conservative in my Oscar predictions. So many possible supporting actors that could slip into this year's race.

Expect Oscar nominations for Score, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Acting noms for Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr. And Best Picture.

I already checked to see the times for the next IMAX 70MM screening at the Lincoln Square AMC (one of the biggest IMAX screens in North America). Basically sold out now and through the weekend.

Oppenheimer (2023)

About as good as it gets for a biopic. 8½ / 10

Agree with Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Actor and Supporting Actor (RDJ). Not so sure about Blunt for Best Actress.

Also, I'm okay with the fact I saw it at home, had to take 2 breaks.

I liked Edge of Tomorrow a little bit more than The Tomorrow War, but I've not exactly seen the two back-to-back. Neither are my cup of tea, but then again, I will watch almost anything.

Edge of Tomorrow was significantly better. More strong Sci Fi stuff in addition to the Action. I gave that film an 8.

Sometimes people temporarily disappear from here, and whenever this happens, it may not even be their faults Remember when Pencho15 was accidentally temporarily banned?
