Live Poll: Face-Off: 'Gravity' vs. 'Sound of Metal'

Sound in movies is not the same as noise, and two recent Oscar winners are a perfect show of how the mixing of a film can use silence to create an atmosphere that is a key part of the cinematic experience.

In 2014, Gravity (2013) won both sound categories; in the middle of the drama experienced by Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) as she tries to return to the Earth, the mixing team used silence to make us feel the vacuum of space.

In 2021, Sound of Metal (2019) tells the story of a heavy-metal drummer as he loses his hearing, and the Mexican team of sound mixers used silence to make us experience what it means to be deaf.

Which of these two recent Oscar winners for Best Sound had the best use of silence in the film?

Random: I couldn't help but think about Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence.

That's actually a great title.

Great idea for a poll! I have gushed to so many people about the use of sound and silence in 'Sound of Metal' and, although it's used to great effect in 'Gravity,' as well, my vote would go to 'Metal.'
