'Gotta vote for my Dad here, whose favorite film was 'Bridge Over River Kwai,' although I'd probably vote for it as a response to the question, as well. 'Really well written intro, Kyle, as usual. 'Good poll.

Thanks Ruby!! BOTRK is SUCH a masterpiece; that final scene too is just wowza :P

I was wondering if it was necessary to break these suggestions up into separate threads but I figured from a practicality standpoint, it would be easier to keep them all in the same thread. If (or when) these go live, it would be nice to have them all in the same GS thread. That's what I figured, at least, but if it'd be easier to break them out separately let me know and I'm be happy to change it accordingly. Hope you've been well :)

I think it's fine, as is. Actually, I think they're easier to find and manage being all together. As long as it works for you, I think it works well this way. 

And, oh my gosh, yes, the final scene is extraordinary. 

BOTRK was my father's favorite movie and he just died; I think he'd be very happy to see that movie getting attention.

BOTRK was my father's favorite movie and he just died; I think he'd be very happy to see that movie getting attention. 
Oh no, my deepest condolences :( I'm so sorry to hear that. This year hasn't been a kind one to people that I've known - I've realized that year over year death is always occurring around us but I suppose it's only once I've gotten older that I've seemed to notice it more. Hopefully he's in a better place now (and maybe re-watching Alec Guinness as Colonel Nicholson somewhere up there.)

Woohoo! Thanks so much guys. What a year for genre-defining films: Paths of Glory, Bridge on the River Kwai, Stalag 17... yet to see the The Human Condition trilogy but it's supposedly exceptional. I think Masaki Kobayashi is slowly becoming one of my favorite directors; he was such a genius.

Note: I really suggest replacing some of the more comedic, adventure style and western/ostern movies (especially Beloe solntse pustyni - while I love that movie, "war movie" is not exactly the right genre for it and it will pail in competition easily to some of my suggestions below)
V boy idut odni 'stariki' (1974) (easily one of the best war movies ever, highly recommended and it's better to watch black-and-white version then the soulless colorized one)
Aty-baty, shli soldaty... (1977) 
Dvadtsat dney bez voyny (1977)
1980's
Note: here replacing anything is unlikely, as list is already very strong. Still:
Proverka na dorogakh (1986) (filmed in the 1970's, not released until 1986)
