2 LIVE POLLS: Best Shakespearean-Trained British Movie & TV Stars

Every year on April 23rd, Shakespeare Day is celebrated worldwide on the date of his birth. In 2024, William Shakespeare's legacy remains undeniably enduring as we mark the 460th anniversary of his birth.

According to Wikipedia, "William Shakespeare (c. 23 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist .... His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted."

Today, his body of work is so well-regarded that performing it well is considered one of the best ways to learn the craft of acting. Worldwide, many actors-in-training choose to hone their skills at performing arts schools and theater companies that utilize works of Shakespeare as their primary course of study. These Shakespeareans find the approach so successful that they often regularly perform his works on stage, in film and on television throughout their careers. Many believe it is the best way to prepare for any challenging role they may be asked to perform. Often, extolling the virtue of such an approach; which both fine-tunes their existing talents and elevates them by developing new skill sets. In celebration of this milestone anniversary, Shakespeare's continuing legacy and the impact that Shakepearean-trained talent has on the quality of modern entertainment:

I am dropping actor Michael Redgrave for actor Paul Bettany. I think the change makes the poll more relevant. While Redgrave is clearly a better Shakespearean and more credentialed, he ranks sixth out of six in my assessment of actors from his generation (born 1890-1919). While Bettany doesn't fare any better in my assessment of actors from his generation listed (born 1970-1989), he arguably ranks in the middle to bottom of his listed generation, I think the answer mix of choices improves. I think having eight options from the most recent generation and having five from the oldest generation strikes the right balance in the answer pool and will distribute the votes more evenly.

@urbanemovies ,

I really like the introduction for your two timely poll suggestions. I really do not want you to have to change the introduction. However, the poll admin tool may consider the introduction too long.

If the admin tool rejects your poll due to the length of the introduction, will you be able to edit the intro for length fairly quickly?

@dan_dassow,

Yes, I will be able to edit the intro for length fairly quickly, as I plan to be up very late already? But, unless IMDb has lowered the threshold from before, I don't think it is pushing the limit at under 2500 characters including the hidden text from coding. I just lengthened the third paragraph, so I can probably save 400 characters there and get the total count under 2000.

@dan_dassow,

I was able to clean it up without really losing anything and get to 255 words and 2282 characters in total including the hidden coding to hopefully have more of a buffer against the poll tool limit.

Going forward, I will keep every introduction under a hard limit 2500 characters including code and do a count prior. This will be a good test, so we can determine what the limit really is. Ideally, I try to let the subject determine the length, but I would say between 1000 to 2000 characters for something with an introduction is my target.

I can't find confirmation that Jude Law did any Shakespeare until later in his career.

@Peter_pbn I based his inclusion on his being listed under the category: English male Shakespearean actors on Wikipedia. But, I agree, I think he doesn't have enough credits to qualify for the label. Plus, I have so many unlisted options that are more qualifying. I removed him from the answer pool.

The Wikipedia list isn't only a list of Shakespearean-trained actors, but also actors who have just done Shakespeare at some point.

@Peter_pbn The Wikipedia list is for those labeled "British Shakespeareans". I also used a list of members of the Royal Shakespeare Theater Company for leads to list. I did double-check any those that I found to be surprising and did not include those I found to have a single or two credits only (i.e. Haley Atwell, etc.). It doesn't make a difference to me, if your Shakespeare training happened early in life or latter in life.

I tried to set the bar higher than Wikipedia, but I guess you could call yourself Shakespearean-trained with a single performance. Ideally, I was looking for actors who performed in three or more Shakespeare works over a short period or as a course of study or in-residence (i.e. Paul Bettany). I also realize that their acting credits posted on-line may not include those done in secondary school or college, as well as, includes all their stage, radio and youth theater credits. So, I think many of these performers have unlisted ones that make their case for inclusion even stronger. I also used media articles with lists of the best Shakespearean as a source for leads too.

Frankly, I would surprised if a career actor could go a lifetime and not perform in at least one work of Shakepeare let alone three.

@urbanemovies The text is too long, the poll system is not allowing us to push it as it is. You need to shorten it a bit.

@Pencho15 Will do.

@Pencho15 Try it now. I dropped another 500 characters from the text to get down to 1795, it is 22% shorter in length from the latest version.

@urbanemovies Just noticed the actors list has actresses in the question instead of actors, if you can correct it now I'll repush it right away.

@Pencho15 Sorry, I was focused on fixing the gender text in the paragraph and missed the question fix. It is fixed in both spots now.

@Pencho15 Thanks, for the extra help.

FYI, I pared down the text in the Best Shakespearean-Trained British Movie & TV Actress list, as well to 1946 characters with a companion poll hyperlink. So, that list shouldn't be a problem, if and when it is needed.

@urbanemovies ,

Shakespearean sonnet in celebration of William Shakespeare 460th birthday

Four hundred sixty years, a bard's grand birth,

A quill that danced with wit and wisdom's grace,

He penned such tales that echoed 'cross the Earth,

And etched his name in time's enduring space.

From Romeo's plight to Hamlet's troubled soul,

His words unveiled the depths of human kind,

He made us laugh, he made our spirits whole,

A mirror held to all that we may find.

With every verse, a timeless truth unfolds,

Of love and loss, of power's fleeting hold,

His language sings, a music that enthralls.

So raise a glass, let Shakespeare's glory shine,

The Bard of Avon, forever to be thine.

=

Haiku

Words dance through the years,

Immortal bard's birthday dawns,

Still his stories bloom.

=

Limerick

There once was a bard named Will,

Whose plays brought both laughter and thrill.

For four-sixty years,

With witty words and tears,

He's the king of the stage, standing still.

@dan_dassow Thanks,

It looks like the IMDb poll limit is somewhere between 1946 and 2282 characters for the poll creator tool, based the lowest declined and highest approved poll text over the past two days.

I am going to hazard a guess, it is allows for 2000 characters as the maximum allowable characters of text. FYC, you could suggest poll makers pre-count thier poll length for polls you think are pushing that limit to avoid the extra work, as well as, avoid delays in posting their polls. I have been using the character counter @ this website.
