In Progress

Removal of duplicate posters for Cheers (1982)

As you can see on the following pages, there are a LOT of duplicated posters listed for Cheers (1982). Given the sheer number, I'd really appreciate it if IMDb would clean up this mess, which, ideally, shouldn't have made it online in the first place.

Also, you might want to contact whoever was responsible for this mess.

Hi @Marco -

I'm revisiting this thread to report that we have made several updates to our image system, thanks to your observations and duplicate image call outs.

When images are added to episode titles they will no longer be automatically tagged to the Parent-series title page.  We will also work through a clean-up to remove duplicate images tagged to a Parent-series for Posters and Product images.

Thanks again for surfacing the issue!

Thanks @Marco ... this is not actually the contributor's problem.  It appears to be a bug (or an undocumented feature) of the image upload for episodes.  If someone adds a poster to an episode, the parent TV-series is automatically tagged as an additional title ... this happens behind-the-scenes so the contributor cannot even remove the tag before submitting the image.  I cannot imagine this is deliberate.

We have opened a ticket with the appropriate team to investigate.

@Col_Needham

Any image from an episode is also an image from the series, isn't it?

It is practical to be able to go to a series gallery and find all images from the series.

Hi @Marco -

I'm following up here to confirm that the duplicate poster images you reported have now been removed.

Thanks again for highlighting the issue!

I was just about to post on this... series not showing a full image listing the past couple of days.

@Michelle Is there any scheduled fix date for the image issue at all, please?

I've just added a few images to a show that only had its title logo - there are now six images, but the main page show as 1 image.

@MovieCat

Can't you add the series title tags manually?

@Peter_pbn Probably, but it used to be automatic, and there's over a 100 now. (I'm addicted)

@MovieCat I don't think they see it as an issue (Michelle's "I have alerted the appropriate team to investigate further and fix." response was likely for only the 404 bug, which is fixed now)

Nobody liked this change, even Marco who opened this thread, it would be nice to get a response about it, if they will revert it or not.

@Bethanny Any word on this? I think this is a very bad change and it's because of this thread of mine this policy change was made, so I'd really appreciate it if it'd be changed back.

@Marco As previously mentioned I passed on the comments, but at the moment no change has been decided.

@Bethanny Any word on this? With every day that this policy isn't reverted, the number of photos not attached to a series main page grows, which means the number of duplicated photos in the database very probably grows and the customers of IMDb can't find all the photos IMDb has to offer. I think that the default should be that a photo for an episode of a series is automatically also attached to the main series with the option for the contributor to NOT add it here.

@Marco I agree. Sometimes I have spend time tagging episode images to the main series, a time consumig task that never needed to be done before, and that will forever be insufficient to cover the missing tags caused with this new, not popular and not useful policy.

@Bethanny @Col_Needham No news? every day that passes more and more images are missing from their series main gallery making it impossible to find all relevant images that you may be looking for, specially in new titles.

It is no practical to search for images of one actor in a series and having to review all episodes to find them.

@Peter_pbn Good to know, however it is sad that all improvements depend on moving to the new design, which I actively dislike :(

Isekai Ojisan - its gallery is listed as having 48 images, however its recent two episodes are updated with images that do not appear on the main gallery. I am not sure if this is a mistake to fix or not, but perhaps it needs investigating.

This sounds... odd.

I can't call it a bad idea. It has the advantage of avoiding spoiler images on the main page by limiting them to the episode gallery. But on the other hand, some images on the episode gallery deserve to be shown on the main page.

This sounds to me like it still needs sorting out.

Until recently, whenever I added an image to a TV episode, it was authomatically tagged to also appear in the TV series main page.

But that is no longer the case and now when you add an image you have to manually also add the TV series tag.

Why was this change made?

I usually forget to do it, and I think many people also will, and therefore, there are many episode images that won't appear in the main TV series page.

Having a place were all images of all episodes are easy to found is great and it's a shame to know that you no longer have the certainty to find everything.

Hopefully things can be reverted in this case.

This remains annoying, has it been reviewed?
