Reason: Duplicate

Sometimes this explanation for a declined contribution appears by mistake:

"The item you have submitted is exactly the same as a submission that you have already entered, which is still pending review by our staff."

Here are two examples where I edited alternate titles:

#210531-083456-554000

#210525-153622-109000

The reason is obviously false as I have never tried to edit these titles before.

Can you explain why this happens or do something about it?

It's not really a mistake just a terribly worded reason. This almost always means someone else had an accepted contribution that was identical to yours and therefore yours was rejected. If you look at the titles are the changes made?

I don't think it is very likely that someone else made the same edits.

The edits that I submitted have not been made, but new alternate title entries were added.

Okay. The correction to "The World is Not Enough" as the display title for the UK would create a duplicate as "The World Is Not Enough" is listed as the UK complete title. Maybe you need to change the one with the lower case is and add the attribute to the existing title?

My edit was to correct capitalization, not add an attribute. The "complete title" is the new one, added after my edit; my guess is by staff or by a bug in the system. It is meaningless to call it a "complete title".

Hi Peter -

Anytime you see this notification, as Adrian mentioned, this usually means that the correction is a duplicate of another pending submission, or it can mean that the data change has already been made.

In this instance, I can see that the title text updates you requested have been actioned and the changes are now displayed live on the site:

The World Is Not Enough

The Kingdom

Cheers!

In the five days since I last looked, it seems the two entries that I originally edited have been deleted. I don't recognize that the edits that I submitted were made.

The phrasing of the message in the tracking system ("The item you have submitted is exactly the same as a submission that you have already entered, which is still pending review by our staff") remains inaccurate.

My guess would be that this has to do with IMDb's editors changing my submission to add a new item instead of correcting the item I edited.

You see the same pattern in this newly posted example, where a "new title" has been added while the submitted correction has not been made: Title correction "Dear Evan Hansen"

Last year, when primary title corrections were temporarily trackable, I and others experienced the same type of rejection (Reason: Duplicate). At the same time, I and other contributors have also noted how title corrections often lead to alternate titles being added instead of the primary title being corrected (example).

@Peter_pbn Actually the reason is, if you have made a submission, you can't make the same submission (or resubmit it) within 14 days. This text is shown when you click on a reference number:

"This batch may not be resubmitted until [insert date], which allows 14 days for it to be processed."

No, as I said I had only submitted the edits once.

Hi Peter -

Just circling back here, I reviewed your initial submission, correcting the title text from "The World is Not Enough" to "The World Is Not Enough", and I can see that your update had been declined incorrectly as a duplicate.  The title text has since been updated and is now displaying the correct capitalization on the site.

Regarding "The Kingdom", I can see that the Canadian AlternateTitle, "Rigit" is no longer listed, but "The Kingdom" is listed alongside the French Canadian title "Le royaume" on the site here.  Is there an outstanding issue with this listing?

Regarding the title text processing issues, wherein primary title text corrections are being declined and the text is being added as a new Alternate title on the page, I have passed this along to the appropriate team for further review and visibility.
