Duplicate Keywords - List #55 (death keywords) (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion)

Here is the next installment of my lists of proposed keywords for permanent merger and auto-conversion.

IMDb has recently changed its display format for keyword search results. The changes will hamper my ability to post these lists in the familiar format as shown below. For the time being, I am still able to access the old version of the keyword search results by logging out of my IMDb account. In anticipation of losing the old version forever, I hope to post several lists this weekend. So as not to overwhelm anyone, I will double the standard 14-day comment period to 28 days, to allow the community sufficient time to review this list before it is finalized.

I am posting this list for fellow contributors to review first and raise any objections or questions. I will wait at least 28 days before changing this post to a "problem" post and asking IMDb staff to make the proposed changes.

The mergers and auto-conversions should be made in the direction of the arrows.

If there is one thing we can probably all agree on, it's that the word "murder" should not apply when a human kills an animal. (But the word "kill" definitely applies in many contexts when a human kills another human, whether or not the killing also constitutes murder.)

Accordingly, I have included the keyword "murdering-an-animal" in this list, to be merged into "killing-an-animal."

There is also the curious keyword "animal-murder," currently assigned to 7 titles. On the face of this keyword, it is not clear whether it means a human killing an animal, or an animal killing another animal. I will "audit" this keyword and try to eliminate it from existence.

@keyword_expert

Thank you for all your suggestions and work inbetween.

As i agreed in the linked thread, merging multiple keywords ("dead...", "murder-of...", "death-of...", "...killed", "...murdered", "killed_by...") to a single one ("...deceased...") was not a good idea and is not an accurate description or replacement.

Also i recognized that the terms "male-" and "female-police-officer" are not widely used by and seem not very common to imdb users.

For example, the keywords "policewoman" and "policeman" have increased significantly in the meantime, but the keywords "(fe)male-police-offcer" not.

My suggestion would be, to change these terms back to their original forms.

That will then be my work, since I changed it first. I still have lists and title-names, so I can make these changes relatively accurately and thus become more understandable and usable for the users again.

I could work through all the terms which include "(fe)male-police-officer" and "...deceased...".

My only question would be, should i change only the keywords including "...deceased..." or also change back "(fe)male-police-officer" to "policewoman", "policeman" and all the other variants i found, like "patrol(wo)man",  "(female-)cop"...?

That'll be the hell of work again - but it seems i just love that.

Also, i can do it a little slower this time.

Cheers.

@DataOrganizer

Thanks for responding. So if I understand correctly, you are offering to do the work manually and revert the keywords in my list back to their original form? If so, I will remove them from this list for now.

Keep in mind that IMDb staff can make mass changes relatively easily, which could free up a lot of your time.

For example, if you find that most instances of "police-officer-deceased" should be changed to "police-officer-killed," than you could change all other instances of "police-officer-deceased," leaving the instances of "police-officer-deceased" that should be changed to "police-officer-killed" remaining for IMDb staff to make those changes instantly once we request that.

Should I keep "man-deceased" and "woman-deceased" on this list, or will you handle those keywords as well?

Since I will be removing them from this list for now, here is a list of all the "deceased" keywords for future reference (as I had included them in my list):

deceased-by-female-police-officer (4 titles)  -->  killed-by-female-police-officer (1 title)

deceased-by-male-police-officer (4 titles)  -->  killed-by-male-police-officer [new keyword]

female-police-officer-deceased (204 titles)  -->  female-police-officer-killed [new keyword]

female-soldier-deceased (51 titles)  -->  female-soldier-killed [new keyword]

male-police-officer-deceased (23 titles)  -->  male-police-officer-killed  [new keyword]

man-deceased (116 titles)  -->  man-killed (101 titles)

police-officer-deceased (56 titles)  -->  police-officer-killed (1120 titles)

soldier-deceased (16 titles)  -->  killing-a-soldier (2 titles)  --> soldier-killed (35 titles)

woman-deceased (60 titles) -->   woman-killed (76 titles)

And here is one more than I forgot to include in my list but am adding now:

female-tactical-team-member-deceased (19 titles)  -->  female-tactical-team-member-killed [new keyword]

Finally, to answer your question about "male-police-officer" and "female-police-officer," I am personally fine with you keeping those phrases in your keywords, if for no other reason than it would be a massive amount of work to change them all to "policeman" and "policewoman." There are thousands of these keywords just in the base keywords alone:

female-police-officer (4255 titles)

male-police-officer (3112 titles)

policewoman (594 titles)

policeman (4340 titles)

Personally I think "male-police-officer" is a better form of the keyword. The word "policeman" is somewhat vague in that it was once sometimes used to indicate police officers of both genders. And for that reason we also cannot always assume that "policeman" should be converted to "male-police-officer." But when we know for sure it is a male police officer, I think "male-police-officer" is the better keyword.

In short, I would not worry about the gender issue too much. The bigger issue to fix for now is the use of "deceased" in the keywords. Your keywords often appear to use "deceased" in ways that are not grammatically correct. For example, it does not make sense to use "deceased" in place of "killed," because "deceased" is an adjective while "killed" is a verb. The word "deceased" is less frequently used. It is a more formal word that means "no longer living; dead." It is often used to indicate the absence of someone who has been dead for a long time. For example, a widower whose wife died many years ago may refer to his wife as "deceased" because it sounds better than "dead." It is often used to indicate family member relationships (e.g., the keyword "deceased-wife"). But it would not be commonly used in this context (for police officers).

I also recommend that we ask IMDb staff to make the following mass conversion for us. So there would be no work for you to do, just to confirm that you are okay with staff making the change:

female-police-officer-uniformed (1818 titles)  -->  female-uniformed-police-officer (4 titles)

The latter keyword ("female-uniformed-police-officer") is better because it is more grammatically correct. The keyword "female-police-officer-uniformed" is not grammatically correct. It places an adjective on either side of "police-officer"; both adjectives should come before "police-officer."

I will ask IMDb staff to make that change in a separate post.

One final question for you for now: I also would like to ask IMDb staff to make these changes (or you could make them if you prefer). Are you okay with these changes as well?

female-soldier-knockout (9 titles)  --> female-soldier-knocked-unconscious [new keyword]

female-police-officer-knockout (21 titles)  -->  female-police-officer-knocked-unconscious [new keyword]

female-tactical-team-member-knockout (18 titles)  -->  female-tactical-team-member-knocked-unconscious [new keyword]

female-tactical-team-member-fight (15 titles)  -->  female-tactical-team-member (299 titles)

female-soldier-fight (12 titles)  -->  female-soldier (1437 titles)

The "knockout" vs. "knocked-unconscious" changes are to use the preferred term on IMDb, courtesy of @bradley_kent. Plus, "knockout" in this instanced is not exactly grammatically correct--it would really be "knocked-out" rather than "knockout." Finally, sometimes the word "knockout" has a completely different meaning: "a person or thing overwhelmingly attractive, appealing, or successful." So in this instance changing it to "knocked-unconscious" avoids any ambiguity about whether the keywords mean physically attractive female soldiers, police officers, etc.

And finally, the two "-fight" keywords in your list above are not grammatically correct either, and they do not add much, because it is assumed that soldiers and tactical team members will engage in fighting. These keywords are in effect duplicates because for example the keyword "female-tactical-team-member" is used on all the same titles as "female-tactical-team-member-fight."

With that final list above, let me know if you have any concerns, and also whether you want to manually change these keywords yourself.

Going forward, I recommend that you refine my lists into a single, comprehensive list that you would prefer IMDb staff make on their own. Again, they can make mass conversions of dozens or even hundreds of keywords simultaneously, saving us a lot of work. That is what my lists of duplicate keywords are all about.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing back from you.

@DataOrganizer

Just to summarize, here is a list of all the changes that I believe should be made to your keywords, potentially with some minor deviations by you, for example if you find that "dead" is the better keyword than "killed" for some titles. But again, a reminder that IMDb staff can easily make any mass changes that you would like to save for them, for example if hundreds of instances of a keyword could and should be modified simultaneously.

deceased-by-female-police-officer (4 titles)  -->  killed-by-female-police-officer (1 title)

deceased-by-male-police-officer (4 titles)  -->  killed-by-male-police-officer [new keyword]

female-police-officer-deceased (204 titles)  -->  female-police-officer-killed [new keyword]

female-soldier-deceased (51 titles)  -->  female-soldier-killed [new keyword]

male-police-officer-deceased (23 titles)  -->  male-police-officer-killed  [new keyword]

man-deceased (116 titles)  -->  man-killed (101 titles)

police-officer-deceased (56 titles)  -->  police-officer-killed (1120 titles)

soldier-deceased (16 titles)  -->  killing-a-soldier (2 titles)  --> soldier-killed (35 titles)

woman-deceased (60 titles) -->   woman-killed (76 titles)

female-tactical-team-member-deceased (19 titles)  -->  female-tactical-team-member-killed [new keyword]

female-police-officer-uniformed (1818 titles)  -->  female-uniformed-police-officer (4 titles)

female-soldier-knockout (9 titles)  --> female-soldier-knocked-unconscious [new keyword]

female-police-officer-knockout (21 titles)  -->  female-police-officer-knocked-unconscious [new keyword]

female-tactical-team-member-knockout (18 titles)  -->  female-tactical-team-member-knocked-unconscious [new keyword]

female-tactical-team-member-fight (15 titles)  -->  female-tactical-team-member (299 titles)

female-soldier-fight (12 titles)  -->  female-soldier (1437 titles)

@keyword_expert

Thank you for your detailed response.

I'm fine with your suggestions.

I would agree to all changes, but i want to notice, that not all "deceased" terms in the category "police-officer", "soldier" or similar originally meant "killed".
There were also "murdered", "murder-of...", "death-of...", "killing-of..." and similar terms - i have every single change in my mail account and could filter it accurately - if it is necessary.
But if that is no problem, i fully agree to these changes.

Unfortunately, I can no longer make the changes myself, because my account has been blocked from contributing keywords today. It was a new account, because i deleted my old one last year as i left IMDB.

Maybe if IMDB-Staff  is reading this, i would appreciate to be allowed to add and correct keywords again - this time with my promise not to do mass-changings on single keywords again without Staff's permission.

Thank you.

Wow, I have never heard of an account being blocked from editing keywords. Are you sure this is the case? Sometimes a new account is not immediately "trusted" to edit keywords, requiring IMDb staff to manually review edits from that account as a sort of probationary period. But again, I have never heard of any account being blocked from editing keywords altogether.

I understand your point about how "killed" was not always the original word, and how sometimes it was other words like "murdered" and "death-of-." With that said, I suspect that "killed" will be the most predominant correct word to revert to, which is why my list is set up that way to favor that word. If I am wrong about that, please let me know.

Here is what I suggest:

1. I will start a new post requesting that IMDb staff make the changes summarized in my list above on a mass basis.

2. Once those changes are made, you can go through your notes and flag any titles where words like "murder" and "death-of" should have been used instead of "killed." You can then make those changes manually (assuming we can successfully get your keyword editing privileges back).

How does that sound?

A policeman/woman or soldier or whoever may kill, as well as murder, and be killed or murdered.. "deceased" can mean that someone is just dead. A deceased person does not necessarily mean that that person was killed or murdered, but may have just died of natural causes or some disease or illness.

Also, isn't there a preference for active rater than passive voice.  "killing-a-police-officer" is a better keyword that "police-officer-killed."  Gerunds are so prosaic and suggest abbreviated, "cute" newspaper headlines, and should, therefore, usually be avoided

@bradley_kent

Thanks for the information, I totally agree.

I was aware that "deceased" can have many meanings and is therefore not an exact description.

Somehow I thought it would be easier to combine many different keywords into one. Today I understand that that wasn't a good idea, because then nobody would know what it actually means.

I also agree that it should be "killing-of-..." or "murder-of-..." rather than just appending "...-killed" or "...-murdered", because I had already considered that it could also be understood as "...-has-killed" (...has done a killing) or "...-has-murdered" (...has done a murder), which in these cases would be wrong.

Better would have been "...-is-killed/murdered" or "...-was-killed/murdered". Only then are there 2 different time allocations that make the selection more difficult. That's why I would avoid such definitions.

I had also changed these words because most of them just contained "...-killing", which was even more difficult to understand since I didn't know exactly what was meant at first.

How do we proceed now, changing every

"...-killed" -> "killing-of-..." (or "killing-of-a-...")

"...murdered" -> "murder-of-..." (or "murder-of-a-...")

?

If so, I would suggest to apply this structure to all keywords with such endings that exist, so that there is a general consistency.

Do we need approval from IMDb Staff for this?

killing-a-police-officer" is a better keyword that "police-officer-killed."

These are two different keywords, with different meanings. They should not be merged. "killing-a-police-officer" focuses on the act of killing, while "police-officer-killed" focuses on the death itself and the killer may not even be revealed.

For example, if one police officer shows up to a crime scene to find that a fellow officer has just been slain, that death is not shown on screen, and the identity of the killer is not revealed or is unclear, then "police-officer-killed" is the best keyword for that situation.

@DataOrganizer I think the keywords are already fine with the cleanup work you have been doing. I wouldn't recommend tinkering with them further.

Thank you for your response.

These are good arguments, i haven't thought about.

I will not touch these keywords again, except it is a IMDb Staff decision.

I like that you call them for advice before changing masses of keywords.

Cheers.

After thinking about it, I feel like the keyword animal-killed is the better choice for the first merger on the list, rather than killing-an-animal

Although the latter keyword is far more popular on IMDb, merging animal-killed into killing-an-animal could result in some inaccuracies.

For example, when I scan the titles with the keyword animal-killed I see at least one title in which an animal is killed by another animal. For that one, "killing-an-animal" just doesn't seem accurate.

Also, there can be movies and shows where an animal is killed offscreen (for example, a character's pet is killed by an unknown person offscreen). Also with these titles, "killing-an-animal" doesn't seem like the best keyword.

Finally, the phrasing animal-killed will put this keyword more in line with similar popular keywords like actual animal killedpolice officer killed, man killed, child killed, etc.

I will adjust my list accordingly.
