Duplicate Keywords - List #29 (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion) (corruption & non-violent crime)

The list reserves the words "corrupt" and "corruption" for government officials who can use their government power for corrupt means (e.g., judges, police, elected officials, government employees).

In contrast, the list uses the word "crooked" for non-governmental officials (businessmen and lawyers) who don't hold government positions, yet they can still be "crooked" (e.g., lying, cheating, stealing, bribing, etc.). 

This is largely just a personal preference, but when I hear the word "corrupt," I think of a government official. This distinction does seem to have some support in the dictionary meanings. For example, "crooked" is defined as "not straightforward; dishonest" and "unscrupulous, knavish, tricky, fraudulent," and although the definition for "corrupt" does cross-reference "crooked," the synonyms section for the "corrupt" definition does expressly put the emphasis on government officials:

—Syn. 1. false, untrustworthy. CORRUPT, DISHONEST, VENAL apply to one, esp. in public office, who acts on mercenary motives, without regard to honor, right, or justice. A CORRUPT politician is one originally honest who has succumbed to temptation and begun questionable practices. A DISHONEST politician is one lacking native integrity. A VENAL politician is one so totally debased as to sell patronage. 3, 4. contaminated. 4, 5. putrescent, rotten, spoiled. 6. demoralize, bribe. 7. debase, vitiate. 10. contaminate, pollute, spoil, defile. 11. putrefy.

Plus, note how much more prevalent the keyword "crooked-lawyer" already is on IMDb as compared to "corrupt-lawyer" (352 titles vs. 100 titles). Similarly, when I search on Google, I get more than 8 times as many hits for "crooked lawyer" versus "corrupt lawyer." 

While consistency across similar keywords is an important factor, it can be outweighed by other factors like word meanings, everyday usage, and preexisting prevalence on IMDb.

Some previous examples where consistency across keywords was outweighed by other factors are the "tv" vs. "television" keywords and the "american-" vs. "u.s." keywords like "american-history" vs. "u.s.-government."  I predict there will be similar divergences once we get into the "film" vs. "movie" keywords.

It does seem to be a bit of a mystery to us contributors whether staff can view certain threads.

Sadly it's a mystery to the staff too.  I do not use the admin view precisely for this reason, but for team members for whom Sprinklr is part of their job, there are too many other disadvantages to not using the admin view.
