Duplicate Keywords - List #12 (Proposals for Permanent Merger and Auto-Conversion)

Here is the next installment of my lists of proposed keywords for permanent merger and auto-conversion. I am posting this for fellow contributors to review first and raise any objections or questions. I will wait at least seven days before changing this post to a "problem" post and asking IMDb staff to make the proposed mergers. The mergers should be made in the direction of the arrows. The American Civil War is the more common name used by sources like Wikipedia and Britannica.

@Peter_pbn​ That is true. But many (most?) of the other keywords on this list are likely better merged in favor of "u.s." rather than "american." Would you favor treating the "civil-war" keyword differently from the others? Or is it more important to treat these keywords holistically with the same approach? I struggle with the best answers to these questions. By the way, the "civil-war" keywords don't necessarily have to refer to the historical civil war (1861-1865). They could also refer to a future, hypothetical civil war in America.

Well, things that are not the same don't need to be treated the same way. A war may have an established name in a way that other concepts don't.

Notice the number of titles for the american- vs. u.s.- keywords. If titles are like votes, the majority decision splits on many of these keyword choices. Accordingly, it is the commonly used american-civil-war that is preferable to u.s.-civil-war, but also u.s.-government is preferable to american-government. They all do not need to be the same, but should facilitate searches. Are we now in an era where "majority rules" is a thing of the past, and autocratic decisions are the determiners?

How paranoid. By the way, I have never audited american- and/or u.s.- keywords. Maybe I should have. For the most part, I trust majorities. My concern has vastly been with duplications and synonyms.

@bradley_kent @Peter_pbn Based on your feedback, I have revised the list to change the direction of the proposed mergers in favor of "american-civil-war." I also did the same with "american-politics," both because of the sheer numbers and also because "u.s." might be interpreted as connoting federal politics, while "american-politics" is arguably broader and could include politics for local office in America as well. u.s.-civil-war (95 titles) ---> american-civil-war (597 titles) u.s.-politics (217 titles) ---> american-politics (1109 titles) One reason why I originally drafted this list to merge in favor of "u.s." is because "american" could be incorrectly interpreted as implying "the Americas," such as North America, Central America, South America, etc. But with these two particular sets of keywords listed above, the other considerations arguably outweigh that concern.

Hi @Michelle, Looks like a few of these mergers still need to be made. And for some of them, although the keywords have been merged, the auto-conversions have not yet been set up yet, which means users are creating the keywords anew.

p.s. @Michelle I'm also now reconsidering the keyword "coworker." I kind of feel like "coworker" should redirect to "coworker-coworker-relationship." After all, the "co" in "coworker" by its very nature implies a relationship. What do you think about this idea? co-worker ---> co-workers ---> coworkers ---> coworker ---> coworker-relationship ---> co-worker-relationship ---> co-worker-co-worker-relationship ---> coworker-coworker-relationship

@Michelle I wonder if it would be possible to reverse one item in this post? Can we switch the keyword "u.s.-history" back in favor of "american-history" (for both merger and auto-conversion)? u.s.-history (700 titles) --> american-history I have come to realize that "american-history" is a better keyword because it captures the time prior to the formation of the United States government, during both pre-colonial and colonial times. It doesn't make sense to refer to pre-1776 history as "u.s.-history," because the United States of America did not yet exist. Plus, the keyword "american-history" was much more popular than "u.s.-history" prior to the mergers made in response to this list. The "u.s.-" prefix is probably best kept solely for true references to the United States of America, particularly references to the federal government. Is it possible to reverse this keyword merger/auto-conversion?

@Michelle, It looks like the following keywords, while merged, were never set up for auto-conversion, and as a result some of them have now been re-created and are being used all over again. Can you please re-merge these keywords and set them up for auto-conversion? reading-out-loud (1 title) ---> reading-aloud (986 titles) roleplay (16 titles) ---> role-play (7 titles) ---> role-playing (1057 titles) running-for-your-life (0 titles) ---> running-for-one's-life (260 titles) situation-comedy (18 titles) ---> situational-comedy (0 titles) ---> sit-com (0 titles) ---> sitcom (2313 titles) And by the way, I should point out once again the redundancy of this keyword: sitcom-comedy (256 titles) That keyword now appears on the list of "accepted" subgenre keywords, but it should probably be merged into "sitcom" as well. ("sitcom-comedy" is redundant). Edit: these permanent fixes have now been achieved.
