Why are we being asked to up with IMDB Pro with an Amazon account? Is this the only way to sign up?

To the extent that billing or at least verification of the customer's identity is involved, yes.

I was going to respond with I don't understand why this is necessary, when Banks for example use verification without using another company, then I found out Amazon owns IMDb.

Creating or renewing an IMDbPro membership without linking your Amazon account is not possible at this time.

Amazon makes it easy, so you do not have to re-enter your card and billing details when joining or renewing your IMDbPro membership. :D

I wouldn't be surprised if there is something in the works to allow Amazon/IMIDb to function more like one coherent piece. Maybe there would be a better chance of reducing the percentage of IMDb member accounts that are misbehaving bots. Amazon Freevee's predecessor had a version of itself hosted on the IMDb domain name, so I'm not so sure.
