Title pages — new version available for sneak peek

IMDb is working on updates to the Title page. The new version of the page is mobile-responsive, meaning all features are available on devices of all sizes, and has a modern look and feel — otherwise it maintains all the functionality of the current page, though some features have moved on the page.

The new version of the page is available to a limited group of fans during a beta period. During the beta, some features are still under construction, and you may encounter bugs.

UPDATE: now available!

Check out "The White Tiger", a pretty good filming about the same titled book.

But comparing the imdb's page about the movie, you can find, that the trailer posted in the new version has nothing to do with said movie.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6571548/

Kind Regards

Timo

It definitely shows a different video, and not one among the 9 attached to the title.

But the title is Netflix content, and the trailer _is_ about Netflix. I didn't watch the whole thing. Are you sure The White Tiger is not mentioned in it?

I can understand optimizing the site for mobile users but there is no reason to also apply this for the desktop version of the site.

The new version is not intuitive and feels like a dumbed down version.

Hello. I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but here it goes:

In the old version, you simply had to mouse-over on the Plus sign (which lets you add a movie to your Watchlist) to show your recently used user-created lists. This allowed you to add a movie to any custom list instantly. Bringing up the lists now requires an extra click, which makes for a poorer experience.

Also, the Watchlist button now occupies two elements on the page - one on the cover image, and one below, on the right, next to the "Show more lists" button.

The other I issues mentioned previously in an older post hasn't been dealt with either.

I don't know anything technical about html / desktop browsers, but it seems the ambition for mobile support requires the programmers to make the website more stupid and clumsy.  So any useful features created in the last 3 decades of browser evolution have to be abandoned.  IMDB wants us to believe this mobile friendly strategy is an improvement.  I think it's utter garbage, and I wish they would create a 'stupid' version just for mobile devices and stop punishing the rest of us.

kvothe, this is 1 change that I actually like.

I have a lot of lists, and I often add 1 title to multiple lists.

The mouseover the add-to-watchlist icon in the "old" version can take a long time. It also closes after every click.

The new function, with 1 click to open the list, immediately responds with an empty pop-up, then fills in my lists, and stays open for me to click on as many lists as I want.

For me, the only downside to the new version: it doesn't refresh the order of the lists if I close and reopen that pop-up.

Also, I don't see the harm in having 2 ways to add a title to the Watchlist.

BTW, I strongly dislike other aspects of the new version:

  • the long vertical layout,
  • having cast in 2 columns,
  • multiple ads (or the blank spaces they leave with an ad blocker) interrupting the data,
  • the tiny release year,
  • not using the term "keywords" on the page,
  • that if you run the page half-width on a desktop browser, you get no navigation tool for the carousels

and possibly other things I'm forgetting at the moment.

Everything is much slower. My rating, the + sign to mark a film on my watchlist, the menu to add films to other lists, all of these take too much time to load.

Also, you can't select text to copy/paste in the director, writer and stars sections just below the main image, which is annoying.

uBlock Origin doesn't fix the big black gap problem for me neither.

Update : the "Element Picker" feature of uBlock Origin allows to clean up the mess that is the new Title page. But it's not a solution if every single user has to tweak the layout to make it work...

Another issue I found out was that it randomly switches between "m.imdb.com" and the regular "imdb.com" when you click on whatever internal link. If the purpose of this big change is to make the same layout optimal on all devices, why are there more than one version of it? So far, it's optimal nowhere.

I think it would be very helpful if you could keep track of, and/or report, which links go off to m.imdb.com

If you use the internal feedback form (linked at the top of the new title page), I think only the first choice, "was broken", gives you boxes to describe the problem.

This new page is consuming twice as much resources. Especially if you're on a older computer the loading times are 3x as long. Plus I have to do more scrolling. Terrible design. Just keep the old version or give users the option which design to use.

I'm not sure if this has been posted already (I'm not interested in looking through every post here) but the the new page format has titles in the incorrect language even though the titles were correct before.

Example:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108052/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 in the old page is entitled "Schindler's List" but in the new page is entitled "La lista de Schindler".

My account is set to English and that film is in English.

This is quite inconsistent and happens randomly according to each film. Sometimes the film titles will show up in English, Spanish or German, with no connection to the film's language.

briancham1994,

Do you use a vpn that variously makes you appear to be in countries that speak those languages?

Hello bderoes, no, I don't have anything like that. https://www.whatismyip.com/ tells me the correct location.

@briancham1994  In which country are you located and please can you give two or three specific titles where you seeing the wrong language? Please also let us know your "Title pages" settings from https://www.imdb.com/preferences/general  (top two menus).

FWIW you might be better both on old and new title pages in setting the "Title display country/region" menu to "Original" (it's the first item in the menu) on the above content preferences page. Owing to complexities in the IMDb data model and our alternate title coverage, this is the recommended option if you are having issues and it opts you out of all localised titles across IMDb

Three specific films that have incorrect titles only in the new page layout:

Your suggestion does fix the issue, but it was quite obscure.

Thanks for confirming, @RaviNathan . Did you compare the old and new layouts? For me, that happens in the new layout but not the old layout.

All three titles have alternate titles listed as "World-wide (Spanish title)".

+1 to @Col_Needham — thank you all for the detailed bug reporting. I'll comment again if we need more information to root cause this issue.

I found, and reported via the feedback form, a place where the new page creates a mobile link:

on the Add to List pop-up, when you click the arrow to Go to a List:

So title page link

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035419/?mode=desktop&rtm=1&rtm_sr=1

sends you to this link

https://m.imdb.com/list/ls007031240/?ref_=tt_ov_wl_button_sm

(I did not include the following in the feedback form:)

But if you strip off the parameters

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035419/

you get the right result:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls007031240/?ref_=tt_ov_wl_button_sm

I think the strategy of _adding_ a parameter to correct the situation, namely

adding mode=desktop

to correct the effects of rtm=1 and/or rtm_sr=1

was not a good approach.

I recall reporting (along with others) that

?rtm=1&rtm_sr=1

gave some sort of bad result (perhaps also the mobile link), then

mode=desktop was added.

But it seems the code that REACTS to those parameters is still around.

I don't know what other value they have, but the page seems to work better without them.

Here's another, route to get misdirected to the mobile version, yet with the same cause (the &mode=desktop&rtm=1&rtm_sr=1 paramaters):

From the new title page, of a tv series, click on the link to view all episodes by rating:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?series=tt0060028&view=simple&count=250&sort=user_rating,desc&mode=desktop&rtm=1&ref_=tt_eps_rhs_sm

Then do a search for a new title in the top search box, hitting Enter to see all results:

https://m.imdb.com/find?s=tt&q=friends&ref_=nv_sr_sm

i do not like the new style. it is very full of white.  older style was much easier on the eyes, with darker format

Right. Intermediate colors, not too light and not too dark.

On the upcoming redesign, there's this new modal for placing a star rating on titles. When I hover over the stars, the stars light up, but there's no quick way to tell which  star I'm hovering over without counting them. It would be nice if the "?" at the top changed while hovering and not after clicking a star. Better for accessibility too, I imagine.

Hello IMDb,

Love your website - use it all the time.

Would prefer to see the Cast List structured in the old way .. actor names down one side, character names down the other side. That way I can scan the list more easily either looking for a known actor or a known character.  The new page makes scanning for either an actor or a character a more difficult task. Thanks

Agree that character/actor scanning is greatly impaired by the new layout.

Hello IMDb

Love your website. Use it all the time.

On the new Title page I would prefer to see the old Cast List layout where the actors name appear down one column and the characters down an adjacent column. This makes it easy to scan for either a known actor or a known character. The new layout is not as user friendly. Thanks.

like the new layout. the Add To Watchlist combo is clear. Ratings easier to view/get to. The Advert Banner uses too much prime real estate.. first half of browser window before i get to the movie, initially i thought the star ratings applied to the Ad content. 11 past the hour   :-)

Hello IMDB!

Your website (aside from the front page) was quite perfect the way it was. All the information, nicely ordered, very clean and transparent, easy to find all the stuff.

Please, please dont ruin it now with this new desing. The pictures take up a whole lot of space, the font sizes are way too big, and are all over the place. The cast list part is really difficult to scan through.

The whole thing is really not user friendly, plus its ugly.

If something is working perfectly, don't touch it please.

Agreed. So big everything has to be today with the new design (which I of course never use unless we are forced to), one could think that we are all blind and can't read small font sizes. The truth is, we are not blind, and we can clearly read the small-sized fonts which we have on the old version that I and many other IMDb-users still use. The big-sized photos and fonts in the new version are just annoying, take too much space and require unnecessary more scrolling.

I do clearly understand that IMDb wants to make their site mobile-friendly, but they could at least pay some attention to desktop users too, like me and dozens of others who never use the site on mobile devices, and only want simple ways to find information without having everything to be big and fancy.

Please don't force a new design on us. The old one is good, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING!!!
