Starting March 12: Easier Data Submission with New Contribution Overlay

Starting March 12: Easier Data Submission with New Contribution Overlay

We're improving how you contribute data to IMDb. Starting March 12, the contribution form will be available in a convenient overlay. This means you can submit data without leaving name or title pages, making contributions faster and more seamless.

To access the new overlay, click or tap the "Edit" pencil icon anywhere on the name or title page you're viewing.

For Expert Contributors: The previous full-page contribution form remains available via the yellow "Edit page" button at the bottom of all name and title pages.

What's changing:

  • All contribution forms now open in an overlay panel.
  • Submit data while staying on the page you're viewing.
  • Roll-out begins March 12.
  • No Action Required. These improvements will appear automatically as we roll them out to all customers over the next few weeks.

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts, feel free to share your questions and feedback in the comments below!

The existing edit icons are quite convenient, also for experienced contributors.

Is there an example picture of what this will look like?

Hi cinemacriterion,

I've added an image above of what the overlay looks like when editing from the Cast & Crew subpage on a title.

I hope this helps!

So "expert" contributors will be forced to scroll and hunt around for an edit button (that currently doesn't exist) at the bottom of pages?  That doesn't feel "Easier" to me.  Having the Edit button in the same place on every page is/was very helpful.

Maybe a profile setting could be made so that expert contributors can avoid this change - but I will hold out hope that it's not as invasive as it reads.

EDIT: now that I've seen the screenshot, I see that this is not very different from the interface that's existed for months (maybe longer).  So basically, no change.  (assuming the "Advanced: Classic Editor" option isn't going away)

Are you using IMDb Pro?

Hi Ron3,

Correct, the changes do not impact what contribution options are available, its mostly just making them accessible from an overlay on the right hand side. We know that some expert contributors prefer a full screen experience, that is why we have maintained that experience from the Edit page buttons,  but the new experience is expected to be useful for both new contributors and experienced ones alike.

Thanks,

Mark

@Peter_pbn I do use Pro on a regular basis.  But even on regular IMDb, the "Edit" button isn't at the bottom of any pages.

Take this page for example: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000117/otherworks/

I have to scroll to the bottom, and then page-up 6 times to see the "Edit" button.

The bottom of my pages (on regular IMDb) have a big footer, an equally big ad, and the even larger "Recently viewed" section before I get up to the Edit button.

@ron3

I guess bottom of the page is a loose term, and the layout is also somewhat dependent on screen size.

@ron3 Thanks for the feedback, however, this does look like a local issue with your browser settings.  Are you on a device with a small screen? If not, try making your browser window wider as what you describe is a mobile view; our layout changes dynamically depending on your screen size.  You may also want to look at the advice in https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/common-issues/why-is-imdb-displaying-differently-on-my-browser/GF2ZAR69V859XLHF  as something else could be causing the problems.

This is how your example URL looks for most people:

All pages with editable data sections should have an “Edit Page” button and this will be located at the bottom as long as you have a browser window wide enough.

Hope this helps.

Maximizing my browser to full desktop width puts the Edit Page button 5 pages above the bottom of the page, so a small, but not significant improvement. Maybe it's just a bad choice of wording. "at the bottom of all name and title pages" might be better said as "at the end of the main body of content"?

@ron3  As a user/contributor of IMDb , and, non native English speaker I would not understand what "at the end of the main body of content" means.

I think it is not working on award pages. It can't load on pages with a lot of data, and if it does load there is no correct/delete option.

Can you share a link to the page where you are seeing the issue @Peter_pbn?

If the edit icon I click includes data types from more than one main category, I have to choose between the categories. For example, if I click the edit icon on the Release Info page, I have to choose between Basic Data and Other Data. I imagine this would be confusing for a new contributor. It would be simpler if the labels at this level could just say Release Dates and Alternate Titles.

On Trivia and Goofs pages the edit links include several data types even though the page only has one data type. I guess it would be more convenient if only the one data type was included.

Thanks @Peter_pbn, this is great feedback, I'll speak to the team about making each Edit link deep link to the relevant data type.

Also, I have cut a ticket to the team for the Awards issue and they are working on it. I'll update here once I have confirmation that the fix is applied.

I tried to test it on my iPhone (16). I can't always submit because the button is hidden under the browser navigation. I tried in Safari and Chrome.

Thanks Peter_Pbn, I'll ask the team to investigate this issue. Does it happen on every form or just certain ones?

@Mark13

It happened on the ones I tried. It's only when there are enough items listed to fill the screen.

Wrong error message adding keyword.

So. I tried this for the first time today, on adding a keyword.

Keyword is added, I get the reference number, but when I then hit the "x", page says I have unsaved changes, how can I have unsaved changes when I have a reference number?

And there is no "done/finished" button, so I have to use the "x" in the pop up?

#260318-133445-965000 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt40810437/keywords/?ref_=tt_stry_kw

I tried a second time (using PC and firefox), and the same link as mentioned above:

same thing happened again, i got my number : 260318-134523-642000 (which is approved)

but same error message when hitting x.
