Starting March 12: Easier Data Submission with New Contribution Overlay

Starting March 12: Easier Data Submission with New Contribution Overlay

We're improving how you contribute data to IMDb. Starting March 12, the contribution form will be available in a convenient overlay. This means you can submit data without leaving name or title pages, making contributions faster and more seamless.

To access the new overlay, click or tap the "Edit" pencil icon anywhere on the name or title page you're viewing.

For Expert Contributors: The previous full-page contribution form remains available via the yellow "Edit page" button at the bottom of all name and title pages.

What's changing:

  • All contribution forms now open in an overlay panel.
  • Submit data while staying on the page you're viewing.
  • Roll-out begins March 12.
  • No Action Required. These improvements will appear automatically as we roll them out to all customers over the next few weeks.

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts, feel free to share your questions and feedback in the comments below!

The existing edit icons are quite convenient, also for experienced contributors.

Hi cinemacriterion,

I've added an image above of what the overlay looks like when editing from the Cast & Crew subpage on a title.

I hope this helps!

> For Expert Contributors: The previous full-page contribution form remains available via the yellow "Edit page" button at the bottom of all name and title pages.

So "expert" contributors will be forced to scroll and hunt around for an edit button (that currently doesn't exist) at the bottom of pages?  That doesn't feel "Easier" to me.  Having the Edit button in the same place on every page is/was very helpful.

Maybe a profile setting could be made so that expert contributors can avoid this change - but I will hold out hope that it's not as invasive as it reads.

EDIT: now that I've seen the screenshot, I see that this is not very different from the interface that's existed for months (maybe longer).  So basically, no change.  (assuming the "Advanced: Classic Editor" option isn't going away)

Are you using IMDb Pro?

Hi Ron3,

Correct, the changes do not impact what contribution options are available, its mostly just making them accessible from an overlay on the right hand side. We know that some expert contributors prefer a full screen experience, that is why we have maintained that experience from the Edit page buttons,  but the new experience is expected to be useful for both new contributors and experienced ones alike.

Thanks,

Mark

@Peter_pbn I do use Pro on a regular basis.  But even on regular IMDb, the "Edit" button isn't at the bottom of any pages.

Take this page for example: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000117/otherworks/

I have to scroll to the bottom, and then page-up 6 times to see the "Edit" button.

The bottom of my pages (on regular IMDb) have a big footer, an equally big ad, and the even larger "Recently viewed" section before I get up to the Edit button.

@ron3

I guess bottom of the page is a loose term, and the layout is also somewhat dependent on screen size.

@ron3 Thanks for the feedback, however, this does look like a local issue with your browser settings.  Are you on a device with a small screen? If not, try making your browser window wider as what you describe is a mobile view; our layout changes dynamically depending on your screen size.  You may also want to look at the advice in https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/common-issues/why-is-imdb-displaying-differently-on-my-browser/GF2ZAR69V859XLHF  as something else could be causing the problems.

This is how your example URL looks for most people:

All pages with editable data sections should have an “Edit Page” button and this will be located at the bottom as long as you have a browser window wide enough.

Hope this helps.

Maximizing my browser to full desktop width puts the Edit Page button 5 pages above the bottom of the page, so a small, but not significant improvement. Maybe it's just a bad choice of wording. "at the bottom of all name and title pages" might be better said as "at the end of the main body of content"?

@ron3  As a user/contributor of IMDb , and, non native English speaker I would not understand what "at the end of the main body of content" means.

I think it is not working on award pages. It can't load on pages with a lot of data, and if it does load there is no correct/delete option.

If the edit icon I click includes data types from more than one main category, I have to choose between the categories. For example, if I click the edit icon on the Release Info page, I have to choose between Basic Data and Other Data. I imagine this would be confusing for a new contributor. It would be simpler if the labels at this level could just say Release Dates and Alternate Titles.

On Trivia and Goofs pages the edit links include several data types even though the page only has one data type. I guess it would be more convenient if only the one data type was included.

Thanks @Peter_pbn, this is great feedback, I'll speak to the team about making each Edit link deep link to the relevant data type.

Also, I have cut a ticket to the team for the Awards issue and they are working on it. I'll update here once I have confirmation that the fix is applied.

Wrong error message adding keyword.

So. I tried this for the first time today, on adding a keyword.

Keyword is added, I get the reference number, but when I then hit the "x", page says I have unsaved changes, how can I have unsaved changes when I have a reference number?

And there is no "done/finished" button, so I have to use the "x" in the pop up?

#260318-133445-965000 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt40810437/keywords/?ref_=tt_stry_kw

I tried a second time (using PC and firefox), and the same link as mentioned above:

same thing happened again, i got my number : 260318-134523-642000 (which is approved)

but same error message when hitting x.

Things are not the way they should be I came to notice with editing trivia pieces on IMDB, something is popping up on the side and clicking on it takes me into a different tab, I don't always need that you know. It seems to even stop me from editing multiple trivia pieces at once. Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation Link : https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/somethings-up-with-editing-trivia-pieces-lately-on-imdb/69c0ecd243c37732eff05844 Title : Something's Up With Editing Trivia Pieces Lately On IMDB

There is an overall change in the edit feature, but it depends which link you click on. Try clicking the link at the bottom of the page instead.

Is there any way to add a check/validation so that in the new interface I will be stopped if I add the same Keyword twice (see picture), It was not validated and stopped when I press "Submit these updates" either, #260326-055112-499000

It is only auto declined as duplicate AFTER I have submitted and I check/track my contribution.

Update: The team informed me that they have plans to improve the way Keywords are submitted that will help guard against duplicates. There is not a precise timeframe for those changes, but it will likely be later this year.

We will update here on Sprinklr when those changes launch.

Company pages include the sales representatives credit category, but this category is not included among the featured contribution features on the page, old or new. Perhaps it could be added.

See 2 pictures for comparison between the new overlay and the old form:

The "tips" section is missing, which will lead to badly formatted descriptions.

Thanks Kristin, We've had feedback from some users that large amounts of text based guidance in the form makes it feel cluttered and is off-putting.  We also have reason to beleive a lot of contributors don't read them. The team were wondering whether we could potentially address this by including the guidance into the form field itself? For example, we could show an example of the desired input format as placeholder text, that once you start typing is replaced by the value you enter.

We would welcome your thoughts on this approach.

Thanks,

Mark

@Mark13

Actually, upon further use of my brain, I think this is a ME problem, I'm so used to the classical editor, that I didn't fint the description of how to format the text where I'm used to,  I see now it is actually there under the "?" *facepalm*

So never mind I guess...

But yes, If you want to add example in the field also, sure :-) (As long as the user is stopped if they don't add anything in the description field (so they don't think it is a pre ready text.) )

Thanks Kristin,

Good to know that this issue is mitigated by the help content under the question mark icon. The team will still consider the placeholder text option, but as a lower priority.

  1. When clicking "edit" next to "Storyline", I don't get the option to add "keywords" in the overlay, even though Keywords are in this section.

2. There is an "other data" box, but that only gives option to add "tagline", so don't know why it's called "other data" and not "Tagline" ?

Good catch Kristin! I see Keywords is available from the side menu on the Plot sub-page, but not here. That feels like a miss. I'll check to see if the team can get it added. And will update you here once I know more.

Keywords is there after I click Plot & Quotes. Plot & Quotes is the main category, same as the headers in the classic edit feature. But yes, in some cases it would be simpler to just display the actual data types.

@Peter_pbn@Mark13  Ahhh, thanks Peter, Mark: that's not logical, It did not even occur to me, because se picture,

After "Basic Data", there is a list of what Basic Data contains.

That is not the case after "Plot & Quotes", so I then thought that "Plot & Quotes" was only for Plot and Quotes...

Employee

Agreed @Kristin, this isn't logical. The team are working on fixing this, with the preferred option being to add Keywords as an option directly on the menu, rather than have it only as a subsection of Plot & Quotes.

I'll keep you posted on progress.

"Self" missing in overlay?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt41462362/ There is 2 cast, both "Self"I click on edit on the same line as "top cast"But in the overlay I have only the possibility to :"+ Add Cast" (no option to add "Self") Is this correct? Or is the "Self" category missing?

You can test live by adding "nm2069712" with an "archive footage" attribute.

I did not go any further because I don't know if I add here if he ends upp in "Cast" Or "Self" section.

See picture:

I get the usual choice of Cast and Self. I think you can get back to that if you click "Cast and Crew" at the top.

@Peter_pbn  Hmm. Thanks for the info, strange. TO IMDb:  If i click "Cast and crew"  nothing happens, if I try again and watch extremely close, it appears as if something appears in 1/1000 of a second and then the screen remains white, as if I did not click on anything. (Windows PC and Firefox, tried in my Edge browser also now, but that just leads me to the classic form and no overlay. )

I tried in Chrome and got the same thing as Kristin.

I remember now that already before this overlay feature, Kristin and others reported that the edit link next to Top Cast only included Cast and not Self, dependent on browser. I guess it needs to be corrected.

Hi @Kristin,

Update for you: For this title: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt41462362/  because both the cast are 'Self' credits, they are editable under the 'Self' menu item, not 'Cast'. So you can either get to Self from the Edit link on the page next to the 'Top Cast' section, then select 'Self' in the menu, or if you are already in the 'Cast' edit form, you can click the 'cast & crew' breadcrumb link in the top right of the edit form (as per Peter_pbn's suggestion). However, it sounds like you were experiencing a display bug where the 'cast & crew' link was appearing only briefly before disappearing. The team have identified the cause of that bug and fixed it.

Please let us know if you still experience that issue.

Thanks,Mark

@Mark13

As mentioned I am trying to add a new "Self" person.

1.

I don't understand:

"So you can either get to Self from the Edit link on the page next to the 'Top Cast' section, then select 'Self' in the menu, "

There is no "Self" , that's the problem.

2.

"or if you are already in the 'Cast' edit form, you can click the 'cast & crew' breadcrumb link in the top right of the edit form (as per Peter_pbn's suggestion). However, it sounds like you were experiencing a display bug where the 'cast & crew' link was appearing only briefly before disappearing. The team have identified the cause of that bug and fixed it. "

No, not fixed, but they have done something, now there is only a text that says "Cast and Crew", seems they have removed the "link".

I am using Firefox browser on Windows 11 Home, in edge browser I cannot test since I only get the classical editor there.

I went to edit a trivia page, and was shocked at the new interface. Can't believe anyone thinks this is actually an improvement. The old one was outdated, but far better than what is there now, just my opinion there. The real issue is someone spammed the new Anaconda movie with trivia about German actors which does not belong. I figured I'd go ahead and request deletion, only to find I would have to reopen the window, scroll down to each one, enter info, then repeat for the dozen or so items. Before you could select multiple items and do it all at once (was there a limit like 5 or so? I don't remember.) No way I'm wasting my time on the new interface. Also,  I noticed many of the items were full of [IMDB calls] and you could barely see any of the content to select the right one. If there is supposed to be a classic editor option for trivia, it is not appearing.
