I'm using the current/old version on Android.  Starting last week, when I scroll down, the page will fill about a fifth of the screen on the left, and the entire right side will be blank.  Is this due to the beta version?

@F1ix4fun  No, the Android issue is something separate, sorry. It should now be fixed, but if not, please reply on the thread at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/page-displaying-vertically-boxed-not-full-width/62d0b15b76277330cfb95ad0

Since we're talking design - can you add (or improve) the option to remove unnecessary credits? I've had producers attach me to things I did as favors and would like to have those scrubbed. I've put in requests several times through the designated portals, and I'm stuck with a myriad of associate producer credits.

I know this is a specific individual request - but I like the old layout and would rather have functionality improved over a bloated graphic interface. - Thanks

@CoryReeder  Please post a new thread over on the Data Issues & Policy Discussions category and someone from that team will be along to help,  please include the 18-digit contribution IDs from your contribution history from any previous attempts.

Hope this helps.

I think it's fair to say that members don't really have strong opinions on the new look, or that it's 50-50/slightly in favour of it, is that about right?

But the revelation here is that @michelle has rated The Summer I Turned Pretty as 9/10... I wonder if it's worth a look?

@MovieCat

I've never seen such ire in a thread before

You should have been here in 2010 in that case when the current design of the /name/ pages launched -- this thread is nothing compared to the anger back then.

Like all design updates, it is mostly just a case of getting used to the change and understanding / seeing the benefits. As noted elsewhere on the thread, this is a work-in-progress preview to gather data on certain aspects of the design on a larger scale than the multi-month testing which has already been performed.  The new design has been carefully built based on years of customer feedback, bug reports and feature requests; the private customer feedback has been off-the-charts positive.  There's some extra background at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/imdb-name-page-beta-optin/62db09f1e232bb632089ba01?commentId=62e0407ac998636027adbcb8&replyId=62e2e0f327c9e55d81c71c01 and also https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/imdb-name-page-beta-optin/62db09f1e232bb632089ba01?commentId=62e05f2f27c9e55d81c6b14b&replyId=62e2e3aec998636027ae4dc6 which may be helpful.

I have been using the new design for months -- the sorting and filtering are really powerful and they are just the start of what we can do here; like many other people here, I wish we had been ready with the "Show all" options before the beta, but we needed feedback on other aspects of the design earlier while that more complex part of the system was implemented.  It is an opt-in / opt-out beta so anyone who does not like it can switch back (remarkably few people are doing so out of hundreds of thousands of people already in the beta).  If you love movies & TV, but hate posters and dislike the convenience of seeing the IMDb rating and your own rating in the filmography view, then understandably this design is not for you, but we have a solution in the pipeline which will disable all of these much-requested features for people who do not want them.

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham That sounds promising, though I was only being tongue-in-cheek.

As someone who uses the site mainly for television, it is frustrating having to "dig down" to get every individual appearance of an actor in a TV show.

@Col_Needham I still do not like the last changes to the Title page. [It is still much more difficult to add a note to a movie]. You need to hire a different design team.

I've already posted my exhaustive list but wanted to reiterate one particular area.

PLEASE keep/create/re-create some form of a list version of these pages.

There is SOOOO much visual stimuli on the new page that my poor ADHD brain canNOT process all the data I need to view. It's too crowded, cluttered, and chaotic. I need just plain WORDS. Please!

I checked out the new page today.  One word:  Meh.

While the large photo of the person and other elements at the top of the page looked alright, i felt it was too large for the page.  could be smaller.   Were the designers assuming that most people have large monitors to view these pages?   Well, we don't.  Many people are using laptops, and 17" screens or smaller.  Make the graphics smaller.  Keep it smaller, concise, keep it simple.

The videos and photos on the RIGHT of the large photo makes it all look rather bulky.  Seems these buttons were made to fill in to match the graphic sizes of the photos.  Make these smaller and slide gallery style underneath the main photo, so you can scroll through them, then for an option to open the gallery into a separate window or tab to view them larger.. that would be better.

But my biggest concern and annoyance is with the person's list of credits.  In the current version of the IMDB name pages, their credits are listed one by one, in a LIST format, with the year on the RIGHT.   This makes sense, as it allows the viewer to locate and find items by year very quickly.    But, for the NEW page, it's in a TILE format, with poster art, and the year under each.   And there are two tiles, in each row. This is awful, because the layout makes it difficult to find anything by year.  And it's messy to look at, and too difficult on the eyes when searching by eye or view.

When you try to change the SORT options, you cannot change this view into a TABLE like view with the YEAR on the RIGHT side.  That would be a great option to KEEP this view in the new name page, at least.

Overall, fail.  graphics are too bulky, too messy, and the credits section is too messy with illogical views making it difficult to find anything quickly.  Keep it more simple, elegant and clean.

@jolbee73 Thanks for trying the beta and for your feedback.

The post at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/imdb-name-page-beta-optin/62db09f1e232bb632089ba01?commentId=62e0407ac998636027adbcb8&replyId=62e2e0f327c9e55d81c71c01 has information on upcoming changes to the new pages, including a table view option.

Keep it more simple, elegant and clean.

There’s now more information on the process and rationale for the changes available below at

https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/imdbcom/imdb-name-page-beta-optin/62db09f1e232bb632089ba01?commentId=62e591f927c9e55d81c798d9&replyId=62e6b0d71b2f176c00131e50

Finally, it would be good to know which other entertainment (or otherwise) sites you visit on a regular basis as this will help the UX team understand the points of reference for your feedback.  Thanks.

Hope this helps.

The new name page is terrible. For credits, having two columns of some movies/TV appearances with pictures and no discernable way to sort or to search a complete listing of one's credits, makes finding a particular listing VERY difficult and time-consuming. There MUST be a way to view the entire list of the person's TV and Movie credits without clicking "next 30" multiple times.

please also show the full titles in the tites list of an actor. If the title is long and has sequels, I can't see anymore what sequel the actor played in. So full titles please, no shortcuts with "..." instead.

Again, as I said before, comapct but detailed, full information, less clicks and scrolling is the best solution.

And another question, will there still be the possibility to create title's and people's lists and what happens to my already existing lists?

Hi Col, thanks for the link, but it doesn't answer my question about the lists.

And another question. Will this user preference you've talked about be avaialable at the same time as the old versions will be turned off?

@lunamond91  Sorry, I missed the question about lists.  The new name pages have even better support for lists than the old ones, so we are not sure why you were concerned about this?  In any case to answer your question directly, yes, lists are an essential site feature and you will be able to continue to be able to create / edit / share them / etc.

Also, going back to this part of your question:

please also show the full titles in the tites list of an actor. If the title is long and has sequels, I can't see anymore what sequel the actor played in.

There will be more room for full titles in the table view option, however, our testing showed that it was easier for people to identify titles from posters (and I personally find the new pages easier in this regard myself).  Do you have some example names/titles where you have observed this title confusion problem?

Finally, yes, the table preference (and other changes) will be available long before the old pages are turned off, especially as we will need to test it with customers.

Hope this helps.

There has been an offer to peek at the new IMDB page "under development".  It is terrible.  Busy, loaded with needless images, and shows only a small fraction of the information, requiring additional requests to get information displayed today.

The current page with its straight lists and categories is very effective for obtaining information, this new page is a mess.

I hope there will at least be an option to stay on the old format after the new format is released.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled New page format - where to send negative feedback on what I have seen so far?

I find the present version quite adequate for the quick `is that?` or `were they in?` searches I use IMDB for, the redesign just seems to be for redesign’s sake, only done by people who do not actually use the site in the first place.

Who exactly is this re-design for?

Well, seeing the comments by the employees here pretty much means they don't really care what we think, they will do what they want, and using imdb will be a headache. So I give up. Good luck, imdb. I'll happily continue to use your database up until the time it becomes some sort of ADHD/TikTok nonsense. I think it's weird that you are getting paid to make a website worse. But oh well.

Feedback on new name view: I'm not a fan.

Some background on "where I'm coming from";

When IMDb made their last significant layout update (5+ years ago?) the "/reference" view for TITLE pages was "destroyed" in the sense that it WAS a good intermediate solution between "the moderately flashy default view" and the "show everything view" (don't remember the exact details anymore), which showed a pretty dense and easy-to-overview view of the most-used information - and now it is either the obnoxious default view or the (then new) reference view which ONLY shows EVERYTHING in a long list. This was a bad change, but despite that, I still have my settings set to:

"Contributors: [X] Show reference view with full cast and crew (advanced view)

(and this feedback only refers to desktop browser view - don't get me started on mobile browser views...)

Back to the new NAME view:

  • Overall not an improvement
  • I don't think the new black theme is prettier but it looks okay, and It's good that it uses more width, but BAD that it's WAAAY less dense and effectively more annoying to parse.
  • "Quick links" from top right is "poof, gone" :'o(
  • I have gotten used to only the person's primary category being expanded, but the new box+poster view is RIDICULOUSLY inefficient use of screen space. "Y u do this!? <gestures wildly>". Looks awful and is inefficient.
  • Have you guys even tried navigating, say, Steven Spielberg's name page in this new view? 30 MORE! 30 MORE! 30 MORE!
  • If you have a look at Windows Explorer on Windows 10, there's a shortcut button in the lower right to switch between "detail view" and one of the "thumbnail views". Something like this absolutely must be a feature if you keep anything close to the current box+poster view.
  • Make the poster thumbnail about 60% of the current height (same as the 4 lines of text), and move the Trailer and More links to the right of those 4 lines, or somewhere else entirely.
  • For example; you can write on the page ONCE "Click [play icon] on the poster to play trailer" and then have something like the "add to watchlist" overlay on the top right of the poster. Or lower right.
  • The "More >" pop-up view is nice enough, I guess. However intuitively it is a bit offputting that the down-arrow turns into a pop-up instead of the box expanding. Not a dealbreaker, but weird.

The new Name Page layout is absolutely useless. Heck, the new IMDb layout in general is useless! Why would you guys take something that worked (and worked well), looked good and was concise and replace it with this bloated, convoluted mess????  Are you trying to push people to other sites?  If so, GOOD JOB! IMDb has just gotten worse since the redesigns.  Apparently your teams in charge of UI and UX are utterly incompetent; as must those in charge of the site be since they would have had to greenlight this crap.  I used to love IMDb but now I'm finding it to be a user and contributor-unfriendly mess.

I'm able to do that for individual titles on the new view (as well as the old, of course).

I tried in the Credits section.

Where on the page can you _not_ do that?

Were you trying to open the category itself in a new tab? We can't do that on the old view either.

I appreciate that you might have a mandate to prioritize featured/sponsored spots and make IMDB a more browsable site with fresh and original content. I wouldn't know what your design team has decided is the typical user or what they perceive user expectations are, but I imagine that much of your user base, including myself, who've ever only looked to IMDB as a database, will miss the formatting that allows us to see a full snapshot of actors' credits at a glance.

My personal opinion is that many research-type users will soon be scrutinizing the site in search of a "classic view" option. I don't get the casual, browsing-type of user you're envisioning, who look for random interviews and featurettes, but it's hard for me to imagine that is typical.
