IMDb message boards

Please see the text below from http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement

In addition, we have created a new Get Satisfaction categories for "I Need to Know" to replace the "I Need to Know" message board and "IMDb Poll" to replace the "IMDb Poll" message board. A post on the Contributors Help board explains the migration path from there to the newly renamed Get Satisfaction category "Data Issues & Policy Discussions"  (which is an already active community here).

An FAQ on the closure is now available at http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?boardsclosurefaq

IMDb Message Boards Announcement

IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

Why can you not comment on movies any longer?  I don't see that anywhere when I go to exact movie.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I just wanted to say how much I miss the MESSAGE BOARDS..

I've been a user for years and I after seeing a movie I like to read the facts and get some other viewer opinions on movies and shows.  Many of the comments had insight and explanations or interpretations that I may not have noticed.  I miss seeing the opinions of others and occasionally posting my views.

I hope you can open an alternate discussion site.

The decision to completely shut down the IMDB message boards must be the stupidest thing I've seen happen this year that was not "political" in nature.

It was one of my favorite features of the website.

We can see now 7 weeks later how IMDB completely shot itself in the foot and otherwise screwed the pooch when they cancelled their #1 user attraction.  The only question is whether they are mature enough to admit their mistake.  My guess is they got taken over by some Hillary supporting libtards and they didn't want to have their noses rubbed in their own stupidity, so they just decided to try to censor everybody else, as libtards are wont to do.  It's their nature.

It is hateful people like you that got the boards shut down in the first place. Show some respect for your fellow humans regardless of their political affiliation. The message boards were a place to discuss about film and television, not politics (unless on the politics board, where it is appropriate).

I am convinced that you, IMDb, in time will realize that this decision was a major mistake. I am actually grateful that you closed down the message board due to all troll activity and other bad behaviors that infected most longer threads. But the decision not to launch a new better message board is beyond me. The richness, detail and complimental qualities of information in the message boards, unfortunately hidden between troll posts, insults, and rudeness, is just something you, IMDb, will not be able to provide to the end users. We, the 'power users' of IMDb, are likely to visit IMDb less, and sites such as wikipedia and Rotten Tomatoes more.

However, I prefer constructive criticism. Here are my suggestions:

Launch a new version of the message board with better filters and surveillance and a more efficient reporting system.

This may be achieved by
- Automatically removing reported posts but randomly, and manually, checking every third/fourth/twentieth (or whatever is suitable depending on the size of incoming reported posts)
- Offer a IMDb Pro 'light' which opens up the message board, I suggest 4.95$ per month to be suitable
- Add an "open source feature" where the message boards used to be, where validated third party forums/message boards/threads can be linked to or embedded. I'm sure at least a few bigger social networks wouldn't be sorry to increase their synergy with IMDb.

Well those that's my two cents...
Now I'm off to Rotten Tomatoes to familiarize myself to their services.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled I'm furious that the all the individual forums are gone.

As a 15 year member I'm really angry they did that. IMDB has erased a lot of my history on this site. It will never be the same. That's all I have to say.

There used to be a Discussion section under a shows main page and now I don't see it any more. A place where fans could discuss episodes and such.

When GetSat merges a message
the entire thread should be merged
as this is marked Read Only:
"This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies."
and no one can reply to it
The actual Date of the message should be there

Thank you.  I missed that announcement.
Personally I think it's a horrible mistake on their part.
And as for them saying people are going to social media,
that doesn't help when you want to discuss an specific show/episode
maybe not in real time due to us not all watching the episode at the same time.

Just came across this thread and thought I'd post about a great replacement that I've been using: MovieChat.org

They basically replicated the IMDB forums. There's individual boards for every movie, tv show, actor, etc. It also looks like MovieChat saved and transferred over all of the posts from the old IMDb forums. No idea how they did this, but I can look up the most obscure movies and find posts from years ago.

I used to love the message boards.  it was a way to discuss movies and tv shows with others and to find out more information about the movie / show that wasn't necessarily clear.  It was a great community to discuss theories about shows and movies and have a good time with like minded people.  Please consider bringing them back!  The site is so much less useful without them.
