IMDb Advanced Search Redesign

IMDb Advanced Search Redesign

We are excited to announce IMDb’s Advanced Search redesign! Customers are now able to leverage all three sub-searches (Name, Title, Collaborations) on a single search page, making it easier to update search queries and navigate to desired results. The refreshed search is meant to enhance the IMDb experience for all customers worldwide, improving the discovery and navigation with easier access to celebrity, movie, and TV content on any device. The updated experience reflects feedback and suggestions from customers as well as in-depth research.

For more information about the redesign you can review our FAQ, and for more information on how to use the new Advanced Search feature you can find details on our Help Guide.

We hope you enjoy this latest improvement, and thank you for continuing to make IMDb the world's most trusted source for movie, TV, and entertainment content.

@Barry777 The new advanced title search is designed to be backwards compatible with the previous version.  Please can you post the URLs of any broken queries and we will investigate the issues.

Hi.

You say this is designed to be backwards compatible with the previous version, yet my saved bookmarks take me straight to the new version.

Could there not just be a link on the Advanced Search page, that takes you back to the old (and better) version?

In the list of countries former countries do not exist and the old codes (XWG, SUHH etc) don't work. Thus, if you want to search German films or Soviet films there are no results or options. See also Yugoslavian and Czechoslovakian cinema.

Also, I would recommend going back to the previous compact display of films, the one where the name of director and 4 protagonists appear. It is essential when you check quickly lists of films.

@minalex Soviet Union exists, it is located between South Korea and Spain. Yugoslavia is at the bottom of the list. East and West Germany are gone. It can be set to search for titles from 1949 to 1990 - German language - Release date from the oldest date (most popular titles are usually co-productions, there are a lot of American ones). That is the only alternative for now.

I sometimes see repeated titles in searches after pressing "50 more". In this search sorted by my own ratings, for example, Apocalypse Now appeared at 29 as the first title rated 9, but then also appeared at 101.

Hi @Peter_pbn -

Our staff were unable to reproduce the issue, but we are happy to investigate the issue you are experiencing further if you can share some visuals of these occurrences.  Can you take some screenshots the next time you encounter repeated titles in the search?

Could it be that with the new search, "Documentary" is no longer available as a Title Type, only as a Genre? Previously, there was always a duplication. This disrupts many of my search links that I regularly evaluate in my Excel sheet. Now I have to always remove "Documentary" because it is combined with other genres as an AND operation. Previously, it was always an OR operation with other Title Types. Is this intentional, or will it be fixed?

@t_peters_6587641  The current behaviour is intentional, however, if you can provide an example URL (or 2 or 3) showing the problem, we can take a look.

@Col_Needham

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature,tv_movie,tv_special,tv_miniseries,documentary,short,video,tv_short,music_video&languages=mk&view=simple&sort=num_votes,desc

This is a link I use, for example, to display all movies in the Macedonian language. Previously, over 800 titles were displayed as it searched for all selected "title types." Now, I only see all Macedonian documentaries because "documentary" is now only considered as an additional filter for the genre "documentary." I now get only 192 titles. Of course, I can simply modify all my links to remove "documentary" from the "title types." Just to clarify for me again: "documentary" is now only used as a genre, not as a "title type." And this is not an error in transitioning to the new design of "advanced search," but it is intentional, correct?

Or asked differently: Are all "title types = documentaries" now "feature films" with the genre "documentary" since the update? Has the "title type" "documentary" been completely eliminated?

Home page Menu - select Birthday.  Enter today's date.  On the opened page instead of Popularity select Birth Date.  It displays 1 -50 of 1,502.  Go to end of page to select 50 more -nothing happens In Birth Date - only the first 50 are ever deleted.  You have no access to the remainder of the entries

If I wanted to look and see who has passed away this year, I would go to this page:  Death date between 2023-01-01 and 2023-12-31 (Sorted by Popularity Ascending) (imdb.com)

If I want to see more than 50, I click on "50 more" at the bottom.

But say I then want to reorder it to see the order in which they have died, rather than who strangers liked the most.  So I click on "Sort by" at the top and change Popularity to Death Date:  Death date between 2023-01-01 and 2023-12-31 (Sorted by Death date Ascending) (imdb.com)
Now, if I want to see more than 50, I click on "50 more" at the bottom, and instead of showing me 50 more, the "50 more" just disappears and still shows me 50.

If you wanted to copy Google and get rid of pages on search results, instead displaying them as one long list, you should have at the least tested to see if it worked first.  I'd personally rather just have the pages as before, as it is less strain on display resources.

I've bookmarked a search with all the parameters i wanted but since today the watchlist parameter (lists=!watchlist (not in watchlist) or list=watchlist) doesn't work if loaded from a bookmark. It will work if you manually checked it on the search page, but if you do a reload/refresh of the page, that parameters will be removed.

There's no way to enter a query by year other than to go back each month to get there. Easy if you're going to January 2022, but if I want to see my ratings from a long time ago forca particular calender year, it would take forever to get there. I used the old format on my phone several months ago, and now it's changed. Any way of changing this option back?

It looks different on different devices, but you should probably be able to click the month/year and select what you want.

If not, please specify device/browser and perhaps post a screenshot.

There was some discussion about this here.

Not going to waste my time. Only the current month calendar comes up as an option on my android phone. I'll try it on a laptop and if it works, collect the info from there, but a busy life doesn't need additional slowdowns like this when it was fine before. Typical I.T. nonsense. Moving on.

@mark_w_h9oezt9satnxv If you tap the year in your Android calendar, you should get a scrollable menu of years from which you can quickly navigate to any year.

On your laptop you should be able to type the date as before (depending upon your operating system and browser).

Hope this helps.

It takes hundreds of clicks on your calendar to get to a previous year like 1938 for example.  Previously I could just write out the date. Not an improvement.

WOW....just WOW!!

Sorry IMDB but the new look/design is a major step backwards as far as I'm concerned.

The old look and layout was much better and for the life of me I cannot understand WHY it was changed or what was wrong with it in the first place.

I had saved several different search categories in a-z format (Action,Sci-fi etc) as  favourites in my bookmarks. I had been using that way of searching for a few years now, but the new format has wiped all that out. I had 10 categories and had reached "H" in all of them.

I now cannot redo my search criteria as the results do not come back in page format, and I have to scroll way down the list to reach the point I had reached prior to the new format.

You cannot save that "page" as a bookmark as it is now one continuous page that starts at the beginning when you log back in.

This site used to be the best to use, to search for stuff , but if you cannot save that search at a specific point, to come back to later, then I'm afraid there's no point (for me anyway), and will have to go elsewhere. I really don't want to be continuously scrolling down my search results to find the point I last left at.

Please at least give us back separate pages for search results, that can be saved or bookmarked.

I really like the new imdb advance research layout, it's easy, quick and with a lot of filters. My question is: is it possible to exclude indian movies from the filter? For example, it's impossible to see a rational ranking of the top voted 2023 movies because there are super overrated indian movies in the list with illogical votes.

@eps_00 Yes, you can do this, but it does (currently) require a small manual edit to the search results URL.  Start with the results for 2023 Indian feature films (ie: the opposite of what you want). For example:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&genres=!documentary&release_date=2023-01-01,2023-12-31&sort=user_rating,desc&num_votes=5000,&countries=IN

then simply edit the URL to insert an exclamation mark in front of the "IN" in the "countries=" parameter:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&genres=!documentary&release_date=2023-01-01,2023-12-31&sort=user_rating,desc&num_votes=5000,&countries=!IN

Note that this might exclude Indian co-productions so you can always use this instead.

One of the advantages of the new Advanced Title Search is that you can still easily edit the other search parameters independently, for example, raising or lowering the number of votes in the above queries or adding new ones.

Hope this helps.

@DarthRobin360  Thanks for the problem report and sorry for the inconvenience. This should be a quick fix -- it is a bug introduced as part of a fix for a larger certificates issue.  We are letting the appropriate team know.

In the meantime, you can still search via PG-13 by picking PG and then manually editing the URL of the search, so for example, starting with

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?certificates=US:PG

and then editing the URL to be:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?certificates=US:PG-13

Does the search within trivia items for people work? No matter what word I use to search, I get a list of all  13,573,118 people in the database. When searching information via other "page topics" for people (like date of birth, date of death, quotes), it actually does work for me. Am I missing something here?

Example:

Hi @Marco -

This issue has now been fixed!  Thanks again for reporting!

2.8K Messages

@Michelle Thanks for the fix. However, it worked (much) better in the previous search. In the previous search, if one searched for a certain term (for example: arrested), the list of results would directly show the specific trivia items with the searched term. In the new search, the results "only" show the people that have a trivia item with the searched term. This means that information that used to be there at a glance (except for some scrolling and clicking after result number 50), now takes much more clicks. (in the case of the term "arrested" it takes 1.544 more clicks (!) because that's the number of people who currently have a trivia item containing the word arrested).

Can this be fixed as well please?

@Marco Thanks for the feedback, yes, this is on the list to address as the same issue came up in relation to advanced title search topic results.  We know how this is going to work and how the data is going to be included in the results -- just need the team to build it now.  We are making progress against the backlog of issues as you can see here.
