Spouse/Marriage Data - If both spouses are listed on IMDb, any marriage data updates should be automatically applied to both spouses

When both spouses are listed on IMDb, updating the marriage data for one of the spouses should automatically update the data for other other spouse as well. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that is not currently happening.

Is there any reason why the system is not set up this way?

These automatic, reciprocal updates should include a few things:

- The existence of a marriage

- The dates of a marriage

- Divorce data

- Any children from the marriage

Currently, none of those things are being updated for both spouses reciprocally. But all of them should be.

Here are some examples, where the marriage (or a divorce) is listed for one spouse but not the other:

@keyword_expert I agree that the system should be designed to do this.

It sounds like most family relations can be added to one person and it automatically updates the other, but deleting a family relationship from one person does not automatically delete it from the other person:

When deleting a relationship between 2 (or more) IMDb pages, you'll need to submit a removal request from each of the names involved - removing a relation from 1 name page will not automatically do so for the other.

https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/names-biographical-data/biographical-data-guidelines/GMT9T242VQADZUQM#familydetails

As discussed at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/false-child-link-on-ivana-trump/63a7c7209bb80c1cea251fce I found that Jared Kushner had incorrect family relationships listed with four different people (thanks to some contributor who did not understand the concept of "in-law"), so I had to not only delete the four relationships from his page, I had to delete each of them from the four other people involved, too.

@Bethanny I am pretty sure the system should be designed to do this.

After all, when I add to someone's biography that their child is another person listed on IMDb, the other person's IMDb bio is also automatically updated. The same thing should be done for spouses and marriage data.

@gromit82 That is a good find on your part in the help guide. It makes it seem like this is set up that way by design, which makes little sense to me. Since all family and marriage connections on IMDb inherently involve two name pages, why would IMDb not want all updates to these connections to apply to both pages?

I haven’t added that many spouse/marriage details in the past, but I recently added one and it seems that the details were not updated to the name page of the ”other” person.

Hi.

This is a spin off thread from the earlier one ( https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/spousemarriage-data-if-both-spouses-are-listed-on-imdb-any-marriage-data-updates-should-be-automatically-applied-to-both-spouses/639f70bd48a801744864d859 ). I feel that the thread is a bit ignored now, so no new replies.

In short: When adding a spouse to page A, the page B (meaning the "other" spouse) doesn't "automatically" get updated. Is this a bug or am I missing something? I have now added a few and this seems to be the case.

Thanks.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled Spouse/marriage data - should be automatically applied to both spouses (now it does not)?

Hi @keyword_expert & All -

I'm following up here to confirm that we currently don't have a mechanism in place for replicating spouse relationship data onto both name pages, so this is a purely manual process and the data will need to be submitted separately to each name page.

I have now modified this post to an "Idea" thread so we can track interest on improving this process, I encourage you to vote on this Idea and IMDb staff will monitor and highlight to the appropriate team.

@Michelle I really don't see why you've made an Idea post of this. If IMDb feels this would be a good thing to have for the database, IMDb should put it on a list of things it wants to implement over time. If IMDb feels this is unnecessary to have, IMDb should say so and explain why it's useless. We all understand it can't be done in five minutes or weeks (or months), but there's no reason I can think of for making this into an Idea post.

I agree with Marco. There are some "idea" posts here where some people support the idea and others don't. But in this case, is there any argument, from the perspective of database users or contributors, not to support this idea? If Person A is married to Person B, then the software should be programmed to determine that Person B must be married to Person A. That's how marriage works.

@gromit82 😀
