Name split: Sonny Boy Williamson I & Sonny Boy Williamson II

Confusion exists around the name "Sonny Boy Williamson" because there are two famous blues harmonica players of the 20th century who used that name. Music historians have dubbed them "Sonny Boy Williamson I" and "Sonny Boy Williamson II".

Sonny Boy Williamson I was born in 1914 and recorded until his death in 1948. "Sonny Boy Williamson II" was born between 1897 and 1912 as "Alex" or "Aleck Ford" (later known as Alex "Rice" Miller). Long story short, at some point in the 1940s either Miller or one of his promoters appropriated the name "Sonny Boy Williamson" to cash in on the original Sonny Boy Williamson's fame.

See here for more information:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0932150/

On IMDb, there are no separate name pages for I & II. The name page above contains biographical information for Sonny Boy Williamson II, including his portrait, death date and the highly questionable birthdate of 1899. Some of the soundtrack credits for this page should go to Sonny Boy Williamson I, though it is difficult to tell which, as they both played the same instrument and recorded in the same genre.

However, there are a few songwriting credits that we can transfer right off the bat. These are:

"Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"

"Checkin' Up On My Baby"

These two songs are known to have been written by the original Sonny Boy Williamson and should be moved to a different page. Also, IMDb should make some attempt to differentiate the two to prevent further confusion. For example, they could adopt the practice of calling them "Sonny Boy Williamson I" and "Sonny Boy Williamson II" that most music historians use.

Hi majfoalbkeopaza-

Thank y you for posting the links! Further reviewing, a new name page has been created for Sonny Boy Williamson II with some of the information moved to that page.

As per the rest of the information, you are welcome to correct/move depending on to which person it belongs to once verified.

Cheers!

@majfoalbkeopaza- You're welcome!

As per the images, images on name pages can only be added by the name owners (and/or representatives in particular cases) and through an active IMDbPro membership with the claim on the name page.

@Maya Both of these guys have been dead for a very long time. I doubt either of them has any kind of official 'representative' itching to lay claim to their IMDbPro account. The photo policy might make sense for people that are currently living and working, but in this case it basically just dooms them to be forever without images.

Photos in this case would be especially helpful as it would play some part in differentiating these two extremely similar names, preventing further cases of mistaken identity.

@Maya Thanks for linking to that Idea thread, but the thread we are in now is a case that shows that IMDb really needs to rethink it's policy regarding photos for people who are deceased.

What is the status of this, apart from the Idea thread that has been around since mid 2018?

@Marco- Thanks! Any information will be provided on the thread however, please note that there is still not an update regarding this policy.
