more fanart

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls566669049/

someone decided to use fanart as posters for this series of games i've found

i already changed the first one

like, for example this one it's a badly cropped cover art not used anywhere officially with links only to user generated sites

i suppose they all are uploaded by the same person? any way for a bulk clean up or do i have to manually deal with them one by one? since all the time i spend on cleanup of existing titles is the time i don't spend on adding fresh movies

Hi @agof -

This images do not look like fan art images. Also we can't bulk delete them as the contributor who added them has added hundreds of valuable images to the site.

Thanks!

@Bethanny these look exactly like fan images they are all the same and uniformed and they are not trademarked and they lack any detail and they are poorly cropped

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217729/mediaviewer/rm2987792385

a 1996 image can't look exactly like a 2022 image as if they were made in the same day

there was no real internet at that time, there was no resolutions above 800x600 or even lower

the discrepancy between the resolutions and art styles is instantly obvious. the picture is watercolour the logo is fake 3d the backgrounds are basic digital gradients the fonts are low resolution

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0217729/mediaviewer/rm2328944640

here's the real box art the image emulates

everything is in the same resolution, same gamma, the picture is not cropped. you can see all the print defects and artefacts of 1996 technology

and then you can instantly see that it's the same sites again, same steamgridb and then imdb itself and people who used imdb pictures in 2022 thinking imdb is a reliable source and not ugc

then you can see that all of them are created by the same person. "hollowed"

when was it uploaded to imdb? for 30 years the image didn't exist and then it has suddenly appeared, and for all the 30-years-old titles.

i start to think maybe the person who uploaded them uploaded hundreds of fanarts waiting for deletion.

at this point i'm ready to bet that if any image exists on steamgridb it's a fanart and they don't have a single official image. maybe intentionally to avoid copyright claims

IMDB is flooded with these steamgridb fanarts there are already hundreds of them.

does imdb value fanart? and especially as a front facing image not just some trash and memes in the gallery

@agof Appreciate your passion for keeping our galleries clean. I will escalate this to our policy team for review and decide if images should be deleted. In the meantime please do not submit any deletion request for them.

Thanks!

On a side note, a while back, to my recollection, there was a contributor who got caught posting such a great abundance of fan art that it cost a IMDb so many man-hours to remove it that a decision was made to block the offending individual from ever being able to submit anything ever again. Thus, it is important to catch these things right away and make sure that contributors understand that these kinds of uploads constitute a form of fraud. On the other hand, I do understand the frustration, in that sometimes media franchise studios/artists, usually independent ones, often fail to create posters, trailers, promotional materials or box art for their works.

Hi @agof -

Concerning the fan art issues you raised and the ongoing issues, I can see that we do have an active ticket for the appropriate policy team to review, which I just escalated further for a status update.  Once our policy team reviews the ticket and provides input we can then determine how to best handle the images.

Thanks again for your patience as we sort this out!

to add a script comparing them to a database of already identified fanarts and instantly refuse them during the submission or review process

hehehhehehe

@Michelle

these people just add 3-4 copies of the same thing at a time and mods allow it

i delete like a hundred of these per week for them to only be added back, the exactly same images 3-4 copies at a time

i waste my time on that instead of adding tens of detective di movies old and new that are still missing from the imdb

@agof I just checked two of these and I can find them on some official distributor sites, so in this case I'm not sure if they are fan arts since they are used on official stores like Xbox Games Store, Playstation Store, GOG etc..

https://www.xbox.com/en-us/games/store/metal-slug-3/bzhs2xcvv5t3

https://store.playstation.com/en-us/search/metal%20slug%203

https://www.xbox.com/en-gb/games/store/aca-neogeo-metal-slug-2/c153k73fmkjh

https://images.gog-statics.com/2bc48433a08f71396c041c41fb75bbe77ea24ec4c9b1fade5d1d0dea01a6c456.jpg

https://www.blacknut.com/en/game/5d5a822ddda2407a508b2ec7_metal-slug-3

https://vgcollect.com/item/22645

Edit: OK, for "Metal Slug 2" the title is not at the top in the official artworks I think, so that might be an unofficial modification yeah, but for "Metal Slug 3", the same one on the IMDb seems to be used on some official distributors.

Edit2: I think you're right for the first one (Metal Slug 1) tho, can't find any official source for that.

@mbmb open your links, you didn't find THESE images

you've found the images with the same underlaying product art you can clearly see xbox or snk logos

the last link is not even an official source

if you search these exact images you can see that their source is a steamgridb fan resource where all they do is create imaginary covers out of product arts or fanarts

somewhen ages ago the original official artist created a picture with no logo. it was sometimes used as cover (like for ost square) or as merch postcards. and these steamgridb people take the official art and turn them into self-made fan covers by adding a logo in a mismatching resolution. you can clearly see the difference between the different elements the pictures are made off.

also not all "official" sources are good. all of what you linked is managed by unpaid interns so they often just google and grab the first resulting image from fan sites or UGC sites like wikipedia which is hosting EXCLUSIVELY fanart due to copyright issues, wiki deletes any and all copyrighted images and doesn't risk fair use. or sites like imdb which is filled with fanrt or photoshopped unmoderated images. i would recommend to never consider GOG at all, their store pages are know to contain images in stretched aspect ratio, poor captures, blown up upscales, poor crops or random photoshops

and we are talking about "POSTER" type, none of which can qualify as. these are ancient games when paper posters were a common thing and these digital covers if they were official and real would go into product art category

@mbmb the castlevania guy metal slug guy and bandicoot guy were only adding fanart, this guy is actively DELETING proved official images.

considering half life 2

that image released by valve is only 600x900

https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/half-life.com/images/halflife2/halflife2_coverart.jpg

since there was physical printing of covers i actually believe it exist in bigger resolution SOMEWHERE

but in any case it's a duplicate image

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374692/mediaviewer/rm3906544385

and what he uploads is an re-creation. not a blown out photoshop upscale, an outright different picture.
like, if you open them side by side.
the model is captured at way higher resolution like on the right cheek and red rash on the forehead
the official text has drop shadow 0 distance in the layer.
in the new the blue tint is removed. dark parts are darker
the size doesn't match, the new image is cropped on the sides but taller — there's orange collar below, that's not in the original. etc etc
it's not "higher resolution" it's of different generations of rendering hardware. if it's not a fan art or ai upscale or a garry's mod recreation, where's the official source? where did it come from?

IMDB is using For posters, to minimize cropping, we recommend a vertical alignment (i.e. portrait orientation) with an aspect ratio of 1:0.675.

digital steam releases use 0.5 aspect ratio

1.19 for boxes

1.415 for dvd cases

old games had custom boxes like ultrabots, armoured fist, prince of persia

these paintbrush.exe artists just take production art or rip sprites and then assemble their own covers to fit the imdb custom sizes

mods are allowing fan photoshops without even looking at them. someone cut out ps3 logo then squished the aspect ratio in paintbrush and when that child uploaded it, the primary image of actual paper poster was replaced with this
