Languages and Countries tags for Poster contributions

We are pleased to announce an update to the image contribution experience. As of today, contributors can tag languages and countries in Posters. You will see the new fields in the image contribution interface once 'Select A Type' is changed to'Poster'.

If an image is a poster you can tag it with the countries where the poster might be displayed. For example, many studios create a localized version of a movie poster to be shown in a specific country or region. This poster for Star Wars (1977)was created specifically for the release of the movie in Japan and could be tagged with Japan for the country

If an image is a poster you can tag it with the languages represented in the poster. For example, this image for A Prayer Before Dawn (2017) has both English and German text visible in the poster and both languages should be tagged.

You can add a new Poster with language and/or country tags or add them to existing Posters already on IMDb. Both fields are optional. IMDb is passionately committed to providing new ways for our users to engage with our content and we appreciate your continue support of IMDb.

Regards,

Trisha

What is a Contributor?
contributor is anyone who submits information for display on the site. There is a huge variety of data that can be added, such as a new Title (i.e. Movies, TV shows, Video Games etc.), Names (actors, writers, film crew, celebrities etc.) and numerous other categories such as directors, producers, trivia, goofs, soundtracks, quotes, images, and release dates. Please see our Contributors' Charter for more information on how we work together.

Will the tags affect which posters are displayed on IMDb now, or does that come later?

No affect at this time.

The concept "an option with no effect" is detrimental in many ways.

We will be displaying tagged languages and countries on IMDb in the near future. No specific product plans or timeline to announce at this time.

Sorry, but displaying tagged languages and countries means nothing to the end users. A user needs no reminders that the language he/she knows is a language of his/her knowledge, just because it is printed on a poster ))

If the final idea of the whole process is to display a localized poster according to the user-profile preferences, it would be great to see THAT working, not the tags displaying. When it actually works, a contributor is motivated to make more scrolls to find the country and the language for a poster. A massive contributor has no desire to see all efforts frozen for a long time, and then again needs a new announcement on this matter.

Thank you.

Merry Christmas to all !

BTW. Tagging languages need no explanations, but countries... What if people start tagging a hundreed of countries just because they think a diaspora speaking the language exists in each country?

That is a great feature! Can't wait to see it in action.

Could someone please show me an example of poster in a sign language?
Could someone please show here a real poster in Old (to 900) or Middle (900-1200) Irish Language?..
All of them and similar ones are in the list to tag posters. Good idea.

Hi MAthePA,

My 2 cents: there is common IMDb table to manage the languages, regardless of the context. There are movies in sign language indeed, and certainly some in Old Irish Language. And IMDb probably uses the same language reference for posters...

But the table should be filtered out for this use. The huge list invites to always use the search function when tagging languages. But even so, the extra-wide table for languages that are initially "dead" for posters invites to input much more symbols to narrow the list... Is it OK when I'm going to add thousands of localized posters?

I certainly had to smile on seeing Klingon, 'More', 'None', 'Original', Pig Latin and 'Undetermined' in the list. What, no place in your hearts for Elvish?

I found it most perplexing however, when trying to submit a tag addition for a previously uploaded VHS cover art that is for the Dutch market, that while Netherlands is in the list of countries, and 9th century Dutch is in the list of languages, just plain 'Dutch' is nowhere to be found:

I do hope that we aren't expected to 'know' to pick Flemish, (which is in the list) especially as they are not the same. (Flemish is spoken in Belgium and is a Dutch dialectic cluster, with their own variations of grammar, pronunciation and occasionally meaning within that single country.)

I can only assume its absence is temporary, as I found the following tag on another image, elsewhere:

Could anybody assist? (And add Elvish, also, it hasn't left the building!)

Are you sure that the image isn't already tagged Dutch? Once an image is tagged with a language that language disappears from the option list.

When I go to an untagged image I see Dutch as an option.

You had me sweating for a minute, thinking I done goofed...
But, I have revisited https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089489/mediaviewer/rm141803009
and note the following:

I only tag that which I know for certain, so while I could guess that the country tag should be Netherlands, I don't 'know' that for sure, but I sure as heck know Dutch when I see it and, as the arrow shows, when I don't.   :)

Interesting - it's not displaying on the image page but when you hit "edit tags" you can see that it does already have Dutch tagged:

I have no idea why the languages display on some images (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/mediaviewer/rm1669978368) but not on others (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089489/mediaviewer/rm863223297).

Greetings and thanks sienel

So it appears I did goof after all, but then so did IMDB!

In my defence, when I get into 'fixing' mode, I just notice what's missing (or wrong) and immediately click the appropriate header on the edit tags section, without checking to see if what i'm looking for is *unexpectedly* already visible there (but not on the main screen. (i.e. I can see Dutch text, spot that it is not tagged as Dutch and immediately click:  Edit  >  Add languages.

I guess, i'll have to take it a little slower from here on in. (Dang it, IMDB, why you gotta do these things to us...?)

[On a side note, however, i'm fairly certain there's no Japanese on that Star Wars poster... Oh well, more research and more work to do...]

Have a safe and pleasant day!

For some reason there is no explanation field when removing country or language tags. This would be helpful, surely.
