Improper genre keywords - "auditing" help needed from the community

Hello IMDb community,

Over the past several months, @bradley_kent and I have spent countless hours "auditing" dozens of improper genre-infused keywords. Fortunately, those keywords have now been blocked by IMDb staff. I will post the full list below. (These keywords are improper under the guideline that says "repeating genres" in keywords is not allowed.)

A few improper keywords remain. We could use the community's help in "auditing" these few remaining keywords, so that they can be deleted and blocked by IDMb staff.

Here is the list of genre keywords that still need to be fully "audited." For each of these keywords, I will post links to the titles that have these keywords but not the corresponding genre. (There is no need to "audit" titles where the keywords and genre already match -- those will be taken care of when IMDb staff delete and block the keywords..)

✅ kids-television-show

✅ kids-tv-show

For many of these titles at these searches, the solution is to add the corresponding genre and delete the keyword. For others, the solution is to delete the genre keyword and add a keyword like "historic-building" or "historical-figure" or "period-piece" or "real-game-show-shown-in-fictional-situation" or "fictional-tv-talk-show" or "fictional-reality-tv-show" or "character-appears-on-a-tv-talk-show" or "reality-tv-filmmaking" or "reality-tv-show-as-subject," etc.

The auditing is further along on some of these keywords than others. The biggest remaining keyword is "historical," which currently shows 399 titles at that link.

If we can reduce the number of titles at any of these links down to zero, then we can ask IMDb staff to delete and block the keywords so they can't be used again.

If anyone is able to help "audit" any of these keywords, please respond to this thread. Thank you very much.

@Pencho15 Thank you. I added several additional Family genre keywords to the list at the top of the post. I have also made a fair amount of progress in "auditing" these keywrods.

Here are some good keywords for use on titles that don't actually fit the Family genre but rather include a children's show within the plot:

watching-a-children's-tv-show

children's-tv-show-as-subject

fictional-children's-tv-show

I just found a potential problem with auditing the historical keyword.

This title is a TV Episode showing the history of an English king in the 11th century.

The keyword historical should be deleted and the genre history should be added.

However, since this is an episode, I am not allowed to add a new genre, different to that accepted for the whole series.

And history is not a valid genre for the whole ITV PLay of the Week.

I was considering changing historical for english history in the keywords, but I wanted to check first if you agree.

@Pencho15

That is a good idea. I think "english-history" works well.

Here are some other good keywords for that episode. In fact, all of these could be used:

history-episode (38 titles)

biography-episode (110 titles)

european-history (273 titles)

historical-figure (116 titles)

historical-event (763 titles)

It is done, altought the keyword will be hard to audit. It is included in many Indian and Chinese silent films that don't even have a plot.

@Pencho15 You are right that the keyword "historical" is hard to audit. I have managed to get the number of titles down from 400  (plus new titles added along the way) down to 320 by picking some of the low-hanging fruit. It will become even harder to audit this keyword as it progresses.

One thing I have learned for this keyword is it's often as easy as converting "historical" to either "period-piece" or "historical-fiction" (or both).

I found this helpful definition of "period piece":

"a period piece specifically refers to a film, TV series, or miniseries that is set during an earlier time."

So that will often come up for fictional titles that currently have the "historical" keyword.

Some drama-specific similar keywords are "period-drama" and "historical-drama" (although those two keywords are probably synonyms/duplicates).

I will keep working on the "historical" keyword in my spare time. Thanks for any help you can provide.

@Pencho15

I have managed to audit the "historical" keyword from where it started (around 400 titles) down to 200 titles.

The auditing will be even more difficult and time-consuming from here.

As you have noted, this keyword was applied to many Chinese films from nearly 100 years ago with no plot summaries, making it pretty difficult to understand the context of each film. And there are even more undefined Indian films from that era with the "historical" keyword.

Fortunately, for the Indian films, I found a website that helps research some of these older films. In many cases, this website has the only plot summaries I can find of these older Indian titles. https://www.indianfilmhistory.com/

Hi @keyword_expert-

Is there any pending action from staff to be done here? I am working through the backlog and found here a lot of the work was done but all our fantastic contributors :)

Thanks!

@Bethanny Thank you for asking.

For this particular thread, I think the contributors have it covered. Long ago, @bradley_kent convinced me that these kinds of keywords should be "audited" before any type of IMDb staff action, so I have been faithful to that process ever since. The best example is when a genre is expressed in a keyword rather than a genre assigned to that title, which requires adding the correct genre to the title before the keyword is deleted.

Lately, this type of work been been done mainly by myself and @Pencho15.  In the past, @bradley_kent did a lot of auditing and editing of these kinds of keywords, but lately he seems to have moved on to other projects.

Anyway, I would appreciate it if staff could keep the thread open for the contributors to update each other with progress as it is made, and to discuss new genre keywords that we might spot from time to time. If/when the thread becomes too cluttered, we might start up a new thread, but I don't think we're quite ready for that.

I would gladly return to working on this major keyword/genre problem, but have been discouraged by the staff's blocking of the "new" subgenre keywords.  They can be added, but are blocked from being corrected or deleted.

@bradley_kent Fair enough. We all set our own priorities. If you do ever want to help out again, I know I personally would welcome you back. Frankly, you make this type of volunteer work look easy. (It is not easy.) And we can definitely use the help, precisely because it is not easy.

@Pencho15 @bradley_kent

I have added check marks next to the keywords that have been fully audited, deleted, and blocked.

I have also added a couple additional genre keywords to the list at the top of this thread.

The "historical" keyword is a daunting project. That keyword will need help from the entire community.

@bradley_kent @Pencho15

I have narrowed down all the disguised Family genre keywords to 2 keywords with a total of less than 10 titles remaining that have not yet been audited.

At this point I have reached the limits of my capabilities of researching these titles (and I haven't personally viewed any of the titles, so I am not familiar with their plots).

Any thoughts on the final "auditing" of these 2 keywords?

@keyword_expert I am not familiar with those titles either, and their plots show nothing that may help determine the correct keyword.

Perhaps the best is deleting them so they can be blocked and then let someone else to add an adequate keyword in the future.

@Pencho15 In the past, @bradley_kent has said he has rented DVDs from the public library in order to track down proper keywords. I don't believe I have ever gone to that length, but I have frequently tracked down plot descriptions on the Internet and even movies themselves where they appear for free on sites like YouTube and Vimeo.

Since the numbers of remaining titles for the Family genre keywords are so low, I may be willing to track down copies of some of these films to figure out the proper keywords, including Mr. Kent's method of renting DVDs from the public library. I just haven't been able to get to that lately, but maybe soon.

I do want to try to exhaust every avenue with these keywords before calling the audit finished. Mr. Kent convinced me a while back that this is the proper approach for disguised genre keywords -- especially for titles where the genre itself rather than the genre keyword should have been applied.
