How to order cast when neither beginning or end credits are compressive

I do not believe this scenario is currently covered in the ordering section of the help. This isn't a "split cast". Most of the credits are shared between the beginning and end credits. Which ordering should be followed? This seems to happen in movies made in the 70s and some in the early 80s. I'm watching Cleopatra Jones and neither cast list is complete. The current order is currently, mostly from the end credits. However, the last credit in the end credits is for Frankie Crocker. The credits that follow must be from the beginning credits. Most noticeably absent from the end credits is Shelley Winters, who is credited in the beginning credits. (I didn't check the other actors listed after her.) For other films, such as A Christmas Story, the credits are listed in the order of the beginning credits and the end credits are added afterwards, skipping those already credited. In this case, Peter Billingsley, is missing from the end credits. I feel we should have a consistent and documented way of providing credits for these movies.

Hi Adrian -

We do cover this scenario on the following Credit Order guide: https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/filmography-credits/credit-order/G8QZ9QSY5EVKAPNF?ref_=helpsrall#

In  cases where the cast list is split between the opening credits and end credits; the two portions should be treated as one long cast list that happens to be interrupted by the actual movie.

Cheers!

@Michelle

This is not the case. It is not a split cast. A split cast, in my mind, is one where part of the cast is listed at the beginning and the rest is listed at the end (with no duplicate cast members). This is not what I'm talking about and this does not answer the question.

If we were to follow this rule, there would be huge gaps in the ordering numbers because we would have to skip numbers for each duplicated cast member.

I do believe the implication here is that the IMDb data editors are okay with the consequences as described:

If we were to follow this rule, there would be huge gaps in the ordering numbers because we would have to skip numbers for each duplicated cast member.

Of course, without the notion being more clearly reflected in the IMDb submission guidelines, it is well within the realm of possibility that some contributors would simply organize their input in a manner consistent with the longer of the two credits sequences, for cases whereby every single credit in the shorter of the two credits sequences is merely a duplicate of a credit found in longer of the two credits sequences. As to be expected, in the event of the two credits sequences not presenting/mentioning the individual credits in the same exact order, a conflict would exist.

Large gaps in the ordering numbers cause display problems where it almost looks like the cast after the gap is not ordered. I can't believe IMDb is okay with that or even really thought about the implications.

I wonder if I'm going to have to open a new thread since we can no longer unmarked threads as answered and answered threads tend not to get read by staff.

There should be a standard way instead of left to the contributor. The two movies I mention do it opposite ways.

Lest I forget, I definitely leave a gap for each additional cast credit which is unique to a character yet associated with a person whose name appears earlier in the same cast credits sequence, unless the character names are contiguous or on the same line. The effect of this is that the highest number among the order numbers will represent the number of characters credited rather than the number of on-screen performers credited. I've never thought about how I would handle duplicates in the context of cast credits sequences that do not include character names/descriptions. I didn't know that large gaps in order numbers caused unexpected rendering of credits.

The "large gaps" is generally not an issue for almost any context. I ran into on Milo Murphy's Law because a lot of the cast is credited with their regular voices and then with "additional voices" which causes you to skip those order numbers. If I remember correctly, it's around 7-8 consecutive numbers you have to skip to cause display problems.

Skipping order numbers is a rule for IMDb (one which I agree with for the most part). Though, it doesn't really do anything for regular views, seeing a skipped order number alerts a contributing editor that that person has previously been credited and to insure that the character name was added to the previous entry. See the cast guide for more information.

I'm reposting this because the original thread is marked as answered and answered threads don't seem to be monitored by the staff. I do no believe the answer provide really addresses my concerns. There are certain movies from the 70s and early 80s where neither the opening or closing credits are complete. I do not believe these are "split cast" cases. In my mind, a split cast is like a typical American TV show episode which shows the main cast and guest cast in the opening credits and the supporting cast in the closing credits. In this case, considering them as one long cast list makes since and there is no duplication. The movies I'm talking about do not do this and there is lots of duplication between opening and closing credits but neither contains the entire cast. The problem with treating this as a "split cast" and treating it is one long cast list is that the ordering gets really messy following the other IMDb rule that you skip order numbers when cast members are duplicate. If there is a large enough gap in cast numbers, this causes display issues where the casts will be separated. I'm hoping that giving an example will make this problem clear. (Lots of text to follow!)

Here are the opening credit cast lists for the movie Cleopatra Jones:

Tamara Dobson

Bernie Casey

Brenda Sykes

Antonio Fargas

Bill McKinney

Dan Frazer

Stafford Morgan

Mike Warren

Albert Popwell

Caro Kenyatta

Esther Rolle

Shelly Winters as "Mommy"

Here are the closing credits:

Tamara Dobson              Cleopatra Jones

Bernie Casey                   Reuben

Brenda Sykes                   Tiffany

Antonio Fargas               Doodlebug

Dan Frazer                      Crawford

Bill McKinney                  Purdy

Stafford Morgan             Sgt. Kert

Mike Warren                  Andy

Albert Popwell               Matthew

Caro Kenyatta                Melvin

Esther Rolle                    Mrs. Johnson

Keith Hamilton               Maxwell Woodman

Jay Montgomery             Jimmy Beeker

Arnold Dover                  Art

Angela Gibbs                  Annie

John Alderman                Bruce

Eugene Jackson               Henry

Lee Weaver                      Friend

George Reynolds             Fireplug

Kanes J. Crawford            1st Boy on Skates

Edward Crawford             2nd Boy on Skates

Don Cornelius                  Don Cornelius (listed as Self)

Frankie Crocker                Frankie Crawford (listed as Self)

As you can see, the end credits are pretty much the same as the beginning credits though Dan Frazier and Bill McKinney swap order and the notable absence of Shelley Winters. (My theory is that she was the only one in the opening credits that was credited with a character name so they didn't credit her again in the end credits to show the character name.)

If we treat this as one long cast, removing the duplicates and skipping those order numbers, we get:

Tamara Dobson              Cleopatra Jones                           1

Bernie Casey                   Reuben                                        2

Brenda Sykes                   Tiffany                                         3

Antonio Fargas               Doodlebug                                   4

Bill McKinney                  Purdy                                           5

Dan Frazer                      Crawford                                      6

Stafford Morgan             Sgt. Kert                                       7

Mike Warren                  Andy                                             8

Albert Popwell               Matthew                                       9

Caro Kenyatta                Melvin                                          10

Esther Rolle                    Mrs. Johnson                               11

Shelley Winters              Mommy                                       12

Keith Hamilton               Maxwell Woodman                      23

Jay Montgomery             Jimmy Beeker                              24

Arnold Dover                  Art                                                25

Angela Gibbs                  Annie                                           26

John Alderman                Bruce                                           27

Eugene Jackson               Henry                                          28

Lee Weaver                      Friend                                         29

George Reynolds             Fireplug                                      30

Kanes J. Crawford            1st Boy on Skates                       31

Edward Crawford             2nd Boy on Skates                     32

Don Cornelius                  Don Cornelius                            33

Frankie Crocker                Frankie Crawford                        34

I can't believe this is what IMDb wants and it will cause all the cast members after Shelley Winters to appear in "Rest of cast listed alphabetically:" which is wrong. They are listed in credit order but there is just a large skip in ordering numbers.

Note:    The current cast list seems to be per the end credits with Shelley Winters listed after all other cast member. There are also 5-6 cast members who are not credited with order numbers as well.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled Cast ordering when no cast list is complete, redux

Why were these two threads combined? It has to be a new thread; otherwise, all the work I put in to illustrate this point is ignored by the IMDb staff. Since it must have been staff (since Champions can no longer have this ability), why was there no answer provided? This is very frustrating for a long time contributor.

(since Champions can no longer have this ability),

I assume this is - once again - something that hasn't been told to us officially?

I'm not sure what you are referring to, but I am still able to merge threads if needed.

I thought we had lost that ability but I see it now. I wonder if it was one of those things that was missing when we first went to sprinklr.

I don't know about merging, but according to a champion or two, here and there, their ability to edit or delete post made by other participants was missing, during the first weeks of the forum reopening after the platform migration.

Hi Adrian -

Apologies for the delay and confusion.

I better understand the cast order issue you are reporting,  as a general rule

we will apply the cast order according to the most comprehensive cast list (the one listing the most actors); and in most cases, such as this for Cleopatra Jones, this will be the list appearing in the end credits.

With that being said, we don't have an exact policy in place for these unique situations where a name may be credited in order within the opening credits list but is missing from the end credits list, in some instances these names may be added at the end of the list for the end credits; eg. If "Shelly Winters" is credited in the opening credits, but not the more comprehensive closing credits, she would then be listed at the end of the closing credits order following "Frankie Crocker".

As this credit order issue is not clearly defined, I have alerted our editorial team to review the credit order policy, once we have defined the listing rules we can then update the guides accordingly.

Thanks again for your patience!

@Michelle

Thank you. This was the exact guidance I was looking for and hoping to make into policy. I now know how to correct the cast of Cleopatra Jones (which is basically to move the actors after Shelley Winters to be uncredited.

I agree this is an unusual case but this is the second one that I can think of right off the top of my head. I probably need to check to see how "A Christmas Story" is ordered because I'm pretty sure it is different. Peter Billingsley should be credited after the end credits.

@Michelle

2 years later, do we have an update on this issue and an official IMDb rule for these casts? I just ran into another example in Small Town Girl where Chill Wills is listed in the opening credits but not the closing credits. I'm going to move him to the end of the cast as was done with Shelley Winters.

Hi @adrian -

I'm raising this issue again with our Policy team.  Once the exact guidelines have been confirmed I will provide the details here and make a request to update our Help guides.
