At one time, this was much discussed, with the result that any title with History or Biography genres SHOULD NOT have ANY of these keywords.  If it is History or Biography, it is assued that it involves actual-facts, real-events and a true-story.

Fictional biographies should have the keyword fictional-biography and fictional-history should have the keyword fictional-history.  They SHOULD NOT have Biography or History as genres.

If only these decisions of the past were still adhered to.

P.S. I have even found History/Biography titles that have these unnecessary keywords:

based-on-a-real-person
based-on-actual-events
based--on-historic-events
based-on-real-events
based-on-real-life-events
based-on-real-people
based-on-real-story
based-on-true-events
based-on-true-story

These keywords might be applicable to fictional films, but NOT to those that have the Biography and/or History genres.

P.P.S. At one time, this problem was nearly cleared up.  Not anymore.

@bradley_kent Many of these duplicate keywords have now been cleaned up with the following mergers:

based-on-actual-events (17 titles) -->  based-on-real-life-events (7 titles) -->  based-on-real-story (15 titles) -->  based-on-real-events (654 titles) -->  based-on-true-events (65 titles) -->  based-on-a-true-event (10 titles) --> based-on-true-story (6669 titles)

No because then you couldn't see the whole list of true story movies in a chart. It's good how it is now, they just have to merge these keywords.

You could see this list by going to the Biography and/or History genres, or, for fictional titles, by going to the fictional-history and/or fictional-biography keywords.

Yes, but then the Crime, Drama etc. movies that have the keyword aren't included.
Anyway, is the staff going to merge these because that's what needs to happen either way?

Yes, they would be included since they would (or should) also have the Biography and/or History genres.  You can request a list with more than one genre.

No, because there's plenty of films that aren't Biography or History titles, probably more true stories without those genres than with them.
See: https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?mode=detail&page=1&title_type=movie&ref_=kw_ref_key...

Anyway, is the staff going to merge these because that's what needs to happen either way?
Or am I talking to a wall here?
Cheers

With Biography and History, you DO NOT NEED these keywords since those genres are  "automatically understood" to be based on true facts, true events, real facts, real people, etc.  These "facts" are what innately qualify them for the Biography and/or History genres.

Only "fictional" films would need such a keyword, if that be the case.  And, in these cases, they would have the "fictional-biography" and/or "fictional-history" keywords, perhaps even the "historic-event" keyword.  The cited "based-on-" keywords could be merged, but, keep in mind, that keyword only needs to be listed for fictional films that qualify.

Hi M J,

Thank you for your post. Having discussed this, we think there is a distinction between real-events and true-story which should be maintained.

One implies a setting or scenario based in fact, whereas the other suggests an established tale. For example, a fictional story set during the D-Day landings would be considered based-on-real-events, but a recreation of a story documented from those events would be based-on-a-true-story. We think this distinction is helpful to people looking for specific titles, and so we would prefer to keep these separate.

With that in mind, I have merged based-on-actual-events and based-on-true-events into based-on-real-events (as of the three, this was the most widely used). Please be aware however that we don't always have the capacity to merge these keywords on your behalf, so in the future if you are keen to get changes actioned quickly, we would really appreciate it if you were able to submit these corrections yourself.

Many thanks

Zack

This is an interesting distinction, but it does not take into account that a Documentary or Biography or History is innately "based-on-real-events."  That, in fact, is what qualifies a title for those genres, so logic dictates that these three genres DO NOT need the "based-on-real-events" keyword.  That keyword, if listed for these genres, is redundant, and, therefore, unnecessary.

Fictional titles, however, could have "fictional-history" or "fictional-biography" and "based-on-real-events" keywords to help distinguish those titles from titles that have the three forenamed genres.

This was discussed on this board to an agreement long, long ago, but that seems long, long forgotten.

@bradley_kent

"based-on-actual-events" and "based-on-true-events" have subsequently been merged into "based-on-true-story."

I do agree with your point that the keyword "based-on-true-story" should never appear on a title with the Documentary genre.

Currently there are only 26 titles with the Documentary genre and the keyword "based-on-true-story." It was 35 titles just an hour ago, but I have been "auditing" this search result to try to get the number of titles as close to zero as possible.

Ultimately, I think that we should trust the on-screen credits here. There may be a legal reason why such a screen credit is listed this way or that way, possibly intended to provide legal protection and avoid liability lawsuits.
