Clarification regarding external links
There was a recent discussion at https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/added-dvds-that-are-constantly-rejected/648dd2caa2a8d86316feb9aa regarding the fact that some types of external links are not wanted for titles that are already in the database -- but are helpful in getting new titles listed in the database.
Keep in mind that all of these kinds of links would be submitted to the "Miscellaneous Links" section of the database, so any distinction needs to be clearly explained.
The following are described as suitable evidence for adding a new title at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/adding-a-new-title/GNXTSSVTJTFCRZGN#evidence :
Third-party news articles | Link to title on streaming platform
Online TV schedule | Trailer / behind the scenes video
Link to title on online retailers | Production stills
Mentions from reputable sources |
However, the guide to links to external sites at https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/titles/links-to-external-sites/G3FNEK9DW6TXW87J# says:
Unacceptable links
Please do not send the following link types to this section:
directors' personal websites: these should be submitted to the links of the director themselves, not their individual titles
production company websites: these should be submitted to the links of the production company's page, not individual titles.
TV listings: these will be automatically rejected.
details of screenings: these will be automatically rejected (unless as part of an article)
commercial sites / sales sites: these will be automatically rejected.
press releases: these will be automatically rejected.
prurient content: links to porn sites, nude or topless photos will be automatically rejected.
temporary URLs: Only submit URLs if they will last more than 6 months.
Illegal streaming site URLs: these will be automatically rejected.
Note that TV listings, details of screenings, and commercial sites/sales sites would all be good sources for submitting a new title, even though they are not wanted for existing titles. Furthermore, temporary URLs may also be useful for submitting a new title since they only have to be active long enough for the IMDb staff to confirm that the title is valid.
I suggest that the "Unacceptable links" section be broken up into two separate sections -- one for links that are appropriate only when submitting new titles, and the other for links that should not be submitted at all.

As already pointed out in the other thread, it probably also would be good to clarify that are the online (DVD/BD) retailer links really added to "Miscellaneous Links"? There are loads of different sites that sell DVD and Blu-rays (now also 4K releases) - worldwide, not just Amazon. And many that are already out of business.
