Why has the edit list feature been so buggy lately?

I'll echo what many have already said in the past ten days- something is horribly wrong with the numbering system on the list feature. This bug has been a pain in the neck for years, but it was usually manageable, something that would only come up every few months. Now I can't go a single day on this site without one or more of my lists getting completely screwed up by this bug.

I don't want to share the link to said list so you can fix it because there's no point; it's happened on multiple lists, many of which I've created from scratch to work around this stupid issue, so fixing the list itself would just be a Band-Aid. When a new list I create to avoid the problems of the old list winds up having the exact same problems the very next day, it's obviously a systemic issue that needs to be addressed site wide, not on a case by case basis.

Why have occurrences of this bug increased so dramatically the past two weeks? And is there anything anyone is doing to actually fix it?

The list feature is one of the few reasons I keep using IMDb over sites like Letterboxd, but if this issue persists I might just give up and take my traffic elsewhere. I use this site to help me relax, but it's impossible to do that when a bug consistently kills all my momentum and forces me to backtrack.

@noah_goucher Yes, this is a strange one and we are aware of the increase in problem reports. It could be an example of a frequency illusion wherein people seeing the problem reports look at their own lists and therefore notice the numbering discrepency on their lists (as long as the numbers are in the correct ascending sequence, the front-end display does not care if there are gaps or duplicates).

The lists system is now some of the oldest software left on the IMDb site and AFAIK it has not been touched in 13 years.  It has been scheduled for replacement when we move the front-end onto the new technology and new design.  It's almost as if the system "knows" its days are numbered :-).

In any case, there has definitely been an uptick in reports so we will open a ticket with the appropriate team in case a system indirectly connected with lists has been updated and is causing a knock-on impact.  Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

BTW if you have access to an iOS device then the IMDb app implementation of lists is currently the best one.
