In Progress

What happened to the more like this section under movie titles?

In the past, I'd type in the title of a Lifetime thriller for example and down the page it would show links to similar Lifetime thrillers in the more like this section.

Now as of a couple of days ago that section is either completely gone on most titles or is full of Christmas movies usually of the Hallmark variety.

What's going on?  This happens on both the app on my phone and the website on my computer and even in incognito mode.

Thanks for the feedback. We have recently changed the way that "More Like This" is calculated.  Please provide specific example titles where the recommendations need to be improved and we can pass this along to the team to check.

High School Lover (2017).  There is no more like this section at all.

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature,tv_miniseries,tv_movie&release_date=2017-01-01,2026-12-12&companies=co0006395&sort=release_date,asc

Almost every movie on this list is missing a more like this section or else it's all Hallmark Christmas movies or titles that are totally irrelevant to the movie title in question.

Just a few days everything was good and normal.  And now it's a disaster and it's considered an improvement?

@tvwriter Thanks; so looking at the first title in the ATS results, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6130742/ we see:

(there are some Christmas movies towards the end of the list, but the first ones look relevant)

The second one at https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5840030/ has only one relevant recommendation before falling off the Christmas cliff though.

The third one at https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5283754/ has more of an intermingled Christmas vs. relevant set.

This looks like a good set of issues overall to forward to the team so we will do this now. Thanks again.

Thank you.  I was compiling a list of Lifetime thrillers to my watch list or watch history or whatever and accidentally deleted the list so went to compile the list again and suddenly the more like this sections were missing or completely different.  Before, they were almost all Lifetime thrillers from the same year or more recent.  Now the thrillers that do show up are pre-2017.

I'm relieved to see that others are having the same issue which rules out me having done something wrong on my end.

It's very frustrating.  I'm trying to compile a list of Lifetime movies from between 2017 to today and not all of them appear on the four Lifetime lists when you look them up by company so the more like this section was really useful to be able to add those missing titles.  But now that section is either gone or irrelevant to what i'm looking for.  Ugh.

It's so frustrating when websites do updates and "improvements" that only make things worse.

It can be seen that work on the section is underway. Watched films and films related to the franchise appeared in the section. There are many questions to the content of the section.

Example 1: For movie "Il grido" 1957 directed by  Michelangelo Antonioni I see

sci-fi movie "Battle of the Worlds" 1961 directed by Antonio Margheriti and another sci-fi movie "Space Men" 1960 same director.

I think Italian dramatic films are more appropriate here.

Example 2: For movie "F1" 2025  directed by Joseph Kosinski I don't see any car action movie. Firrst 4 options "Top Gun: Maverick" 2022, "Twisters" 2024, "Spiderhead" 2022, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" 2014.

I believe that films like "Gran Turismo" 2023 and "Ferrari" 2023 are more appropriate here.

Example 3: For movie "Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages" 1916 directed by D.W. Griffith I see movie "The Women" 2008 directed by Diane English. How this film got into the "More Like This" section?

For many comedies in the section, I see dramas and horror.

Summing up, options that are not related in genres and subgenres and time often appear in the section.

Yea, I'm still getting either: no more like this section, one that is partially similar movies, or just generic movies that have nothing to do with the movie.

I just looked up the movie Lady, Stay Dead (1981) and it is just random movies that have nothing to do with it.

It's a little frustrating that it has been over 2 weeks that this issue has continued. Why bother trying out a new more like this feature when the original feature was fine as it was?

@ArtofAlmost  Thanks for the feedback and the additional example.  When you say "generic movies" please can you check the heading for those because when we have insufficient recommendations, instead of "More Like This" we now switch to a generic "Top picks" widget instead (we are debating with the team whether this fall-back makes sense) or do you have examples of titles with generic "More Like This" recommendations?

For Lady, Stay Dead (1981) we see recommendations including: Blue Velvet / The Gift / Companion / Split / Obsession / Donnie Darko, all of which are not too thematically distant in different ways, at least from looking at the reviews on the 1981 title (and all of which are significantly better reviewed than it :-)

It's a little frustrating that it has been over 2 weeks that this issue has continued. Why bother trying out a new more like this feature when the original feature was fine as it was?

Unfortunately there were both techinical and operational issues why the previous system had to be replaced with the new system.  The new system is more closely connected to the data connections / overlaps between titles vs. the traffic patterns which were a key part of the previous system.  As a result, at least in theory, we ought to show fewer recommendations where the only connection between the title and its recommendations are that the titles were all released around the same time.  Obviously there are some teething troubles with the new systen which we need to iron out to make the theory better align in practice. Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

Hope this helps.

@Col_Needham Well, under the old More Like This system, it would throw up movies that were generally released at a similar time, had actors or crew in common, had genres in common or things like that.

For Lady, Stay Dead it is basically just throwing up random movie that are somewhat connected thematically but not with the same connections as you used to get.

Like Blue Velvet? Not really similar in genre. Gattaca and The Sixth Sense? Not really related. Companion, Ex Machina? Nope, not related either.

It seems to be picking either newer movies, or mainstream movies.

This is a low-budget Australian exploitation movie. So before, I would have gotten more like this recommendations that would have been: other exploitation movies, other Australian low budget movies, maybe a couple of movies that shared actors/director.

And now the next film I've looked up seems to have an actual more like this field.

Also, I should note when the more like this is showing generic films, it is always entirely made up of films I have already rated. I don't know if that means anything, but thought I would mention it.

Just because you asked for more examples. Tokyo Gore Police features no 'More Like This' section.

@ArtofAlmost If you mean https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183732/ then we see:

However in any case, we are seeking examples of titles with poor recommendations , not titles which have no recommendations (the last title in the above screen-grab is particularly poor though).

@denissix Thanks, however, we are seeking examples of titles with poor recommendations , not titles which have no recommendations.

@Col_Needham

Yea, I had no more like this section at all on my end.

But I won't bring up pages with a lack of more like this again.

Although even in your screenshot, it is kind of broken still. 3 straight movies made by the same director and then Superhero Movie which is not even remotely related.

I'm now consistently getting a More Like This, but it is just filled with more movies from the same director of the movie I'm looking up. Which, obviously, makes it useless as if I like a movie by a director, I can just click their name to find out other movies they have made.

I wanted to give more examples, but I only see unseen films again

@ArtofAlmost Thanks,  but we need links to actual example titles in order for the team to investigate.

Oh well, I went to get an example of this by going back to the page I was on when I saw it.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295254/

Luckily, the more like this doesn't do that any more, it has gone back to showing completely random movies with little or no connection the movie being looked up.

Police Academy, Mortal Kombat, Breach, Baaghi 3.

@ArtofAlmost So on https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0295254/ I am seeing:

which thematically look okay to me. Are you still seeing: Police Academy, Mortal Kombat, Breach, Baaghi 3.

No, it has gone back to just showing other movies made by the same director.

And the movies in your screenshot are still mainly just a mixture of newer films rather than films that would be more specifically related to the movie. Although it has gotten closer by showing movies that are at least more related in terms of genre, it still seems to be more heavily weighted towards newer or just mainstream movies rather than the more specific blend that more like this used to give you.

Why others see watched movies but I don't https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069421/

I see only 3 unseen options.
