Video: Separate titles by language on the Recent Trailers page

Hi, Vincent Fournols. I'm pretty sure the creator of this topic means most people in the world. Literacy of humanity is not yet a thing to be overestimated, let alone multilinguality.

OK sorry, I know this is now a world wide site.  But until about a year or so ago, every time I went to the recent trailers page, it ONLY had movies in English.  I have been using this page for many years to try to keep up with new releases that have trailers.  I am not trying to dis non-English movies, I just will not watch them as I end up just reading the subtitles and not seeing the film.  So, my simple suggestion is to put the non-English movies on a separate page for those who want to check that stuff out.  Also recently there have been more and more new trailers of very old movies on this recent trailers page, that should also be put on a separate page, for those who want to see trailers to movies that they probably already saw. Most of us want to view trailers to decide if we want to see the movie at all!  The current setup has become more trouble to use than it is worth.


Just to clarify, I'm not terribly insulted, but my remark was to suggest that United States nationals are not necessarily so different from the rest of world in regards to appreciation for subtitled foreign flicks. (Sometimes people anywhere in the world have misconceptions about the people of foreign lands.) Even most Canadian nationals outside of Quebec aren't required to learn the French language, don't bother to learn it and don't seem to want to "bother"; even though the nation is idealized as bilingual. A significant number of Québécoise don't have to and accordingly won't learn the English language. Many jurisdictions within the United Kingdom provide programs for students to learn foreign languages, especially European ones but also Mandarin, but most Britons and Irish don't bother with it. (Programs are offered in many United States schools too, but they expectedly focus on mostly on the Spanish language and, to a lesser extent, the French language, maybe the German language, pretty much ignoring all other languages.) Similar is the case with Australia and South Africa. Revisiting the subject of America, a few of the States are idealized as bilingual, but most of the State-specific native speakers of English don't learn the Spanish language, and an untold unclear number of the native speakers of Spanish never become fluent in the English language (which is largely linked to the illegal "immigration" situation). Most Mexican nationals don't learn the English language, despite all the intermingling with the United States. (Haitians and Dominicans share an archipelago but don't really extensively speak each others' respective languages.) It's true, however, that people not from the United States (including people from other parts of the Anglosphere) are slightly more inclined to learn the English language than Americans are to learn non-English languages.

So, but what does all this have to do with cinema or the appreciation of cinema? Well, in general, as suggested before, most human beings, at least seemingly, will prefer to watch movies that have audio (whether original or dubbed-over) in whichever language is those people's first language. That's currently the speculative "natural order" of things and has been for a very long time. I don't believe it will stay that way in centuries beyond, though.

While there was a time long ago when "IMDb" was an acronym that stood for "International Movie Database", it has long since some refer to "Internet Movie Database", an as we well-know, English is said to be the lingua franca of the Internet, including much of the software development and technical specifications that facilitate the purposes of the Internet.

FWIW, IMDb never stood for “International Movie Database” — it’s always been “Internet Movie Database” however we prefer simply “IMDb” as we cover much more than just movies.

O, my mistake, Col Needham. I shall spread the word howsoever opportunity allows. Seems more than a few people are under the mistaken impression that the "I" was or is for "International".

Don't worry: I have adapted myself to be able to occasionnally believe that it is the Imerican Movie Database, or even sometimes the Icalifornian Movie Database...
