Solved

The same titles keep reappearing in the watch history

Hi,

when I scroll down my watch history the same movies start to pop up again, especially after more are being loaded. There should be 1883 unique entries, and it is so when I verify all the watched titles via Advanced Search, but in the watch history the list seems to start all over again every 200-300 entries.

Is there some bug or can I solve it somehow on my own?

Hello @Martymccflyy,

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will try the above and let you know about the outcome.

Hi again @Martymccflyy,

I followed the steps, but the issue still occurs. I checked on 2 laptops, both with Win11, one with Edge browser, the other with Opera.

Basically the issue takes place when I click "My watch history" and start to scroll down. After some time, when more titles are loaded, they start to appear again, in the same sequence.

Here is a screenshot of such situation. I scrolled down long enough to make Predator: Badlands appear four times (I marked them also on the scrollbar). If I continued to scroll down it would appear more times, but I believe this already shows the problem.

If you have any suggestions or need more screenshots, please let me know.

EDIT: Sorry for the bad pic quality. I am not sure how I can make it look better, the resolution was reduced automatically.

EDIT 2: One more thing, the issue might have started to occur after I deleted my whole Check-in list, which resulted in the Watch history becoming the only tracking option. (Up to then there were 2 parallel lists: the Check-ins and the history). Not sure if this is the case, but I did the deletion a few days ago, so maybe the current issue is the result of that.

@Stormcatcher From the Watched FAQ at https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/new-features-updates/mark-as-watched-faq/GR2SD7Y4LZVNHUVH

What counts as a Watched action?

Anytime you mark a movie or TV show as Watched, add a Rating, Review, or Check-in.
If you have deleted your check-in list, you have removed the primary input for the Watched data; this will explain the behaviour which you are seeing as this is not a supported nor an expected action.  What should have happened is that the deletion of all of your check-ins should have also removed the same titles from Watched (unless you had rated or reviewed them as well). The technical team will need to look at why your Watched data was not reset to reflect the deleted check-ins.  How exactly did you delete your check-ins list?

@Col_Needham Thank you for the explanation.

How exactly did you delete your check-ins list?

I did that in the edit mode - I simply selected all the items and clicked on Delete.

What should have happened is that the deletion of all of your check-ins should have also removed the same titles from Watched (unless you had rated or reviewed them as well).

Actually the titles that keep repeating in the damaged watch history are the ones that were rated (298 of them). The others seem to not be visible there now, but I still can see them via Advanced Search when I restrict to titles I have watched.

So, theoretically, it should all go back to normal if I manually add all my check-ins again?

@Col_Needham I manually brought back all my check-ins. Unfortunately the watch history still seems to have the mentioned issue.

Perhaps the watch history needs to be reset? Is it possible for the Imdb technical team to do that? I could even copy the check-ins to some new list for the time of reset and then copy it back to check-ins afterwards. Maybe starting from scratch would make the history work as intended?

@Stormcatcher Thanks for the details. No need to take any action yet as we will flag this to the software team, as although unusual, it should not actually be happening anyway.

@Col_Needham  Thank you for your help.

For the future, what is the recommended way to track the watched items (apart from rating them)? Should I still add new check-ins or just click on the "watched" button?

@Stormcatcher - We can confirm that this issue is now resolved and it should no longer be happening. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

@Maya This is great news, thank you very much for your help! To avoid the issue in the future, shall I keep both: the check-ins and the watch history? Or can the latter run without the former now?

@Stormcatcher It is your choice to use whichever system best suits your needs.  Watched is a simple way of recording that you have watched a title without needing to vote for it on the 1-10 ratings scale. Any title which you rate, review, or check-in to is automatically added to Watched (or you can manually mark a title as Watched without rating it, reviewing it or checking-in to it).

The difference between marking a title as Watched vs. Checking-in to it is that on the IMDb apps you can check-in to the same title multiple times, whereas a title can only be marked Watched once.  Check-ins therefore provide a historical record of when you saw each title and how many times you have seen it.  For example, in my check-ins list at https://www.imdb.com/user/p.colneedham/checkins/ a recent movie I have seen three times is Marty Supreme (2025) so it is listed three times there; whereas in my ratings list at https://www.imdb.com/user/p.colneedham/ratings/ the title can only appear once, representing the last time I rated it.

Hope this helps.
