Suggestion: mark movie as viewed without rating
Dear all,
This is the first time I came to this forum, so I am sorry if my considerations have already been discussed (I browsed but didn't find anything).
I have been using IMDB for a long time but only recently, as my memory gets weaker with age, I decided to rate movies and make lists.
In doing that I found quite hard rating old movies since I think we all judge them with a different "meter" than recent films.
For instance, how can we rate a Loumière film or a Méliès film?
What's the meaning of the average vote 6.9 for La sortie de l'usine Lumière à Lyon? What about the 7.5 of Un homme de tete?
Are we rating the technology, the art, the historical relevance or simply the beauty?
Can we compare them to Casablanca, The Godfather or Pan's Labyrinth?
Well, I think we can't compare them.
We can't compare pioneers inventing a technology and an art with artists working in a well defined environment. It's for sure true that film-making is continuously evolving, but we all know that the step from 0 to 1 is no way comparable to the step from 2468 to 2469.
So, in some cases, I think it would be appropriate to suspend our judgment.
And marking very early movies as seen without rating them would be suitable.
But currently this is not possible with IMDB. This would require a small enhancement.
There are other cases where this new feature can be useful: sometimes you watch a movie but you need time to digest it.
How many times have you watched a movie, liked it a lot, and after a few days you completely forgot about it?
How many times you felt a bit deceived by a movie just because you were expecting something different. But maybe after years you still think about it.
Marking the movie as seen without rating will also allow you to take a breath and judge the film from a distance.
Thank you for taking the time to read.

Ok, just the time to write the post and somebody else asked the same question.
Funny.
