Ratings: Overrated Turkish movies on IMDb

When I search for the best movies of the 1970s on IMDB, I always find a handful of obscure turkish movies (with thousands of votes and ratings around 9.0). It is an obvious hackers job (these movies don't even have posters). I think that IMDB should preserve the credibility of its search system by wiping out of the results movies with such a fraudulent rating. The best movie of the 70s with a considerable number of votes should be The Godfather, not The Chaos Class.

Hi Angelo Pilla,

I'm assuming that you are referring to an advanced search like this one.
Highest Rated Feature Films Released 1970 to 1979 With At Least 1,000 Votes
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&num_votes=1000,&release_date=1970,1979&sort=u...

IMDb only considers votes from regular users when ranking films. You will not see The Chaos Class (1975) in the IMDb Top 250 (http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?ref=ft_250) or in the IMDb Top 1000 (http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&groups=top_1000&sort=user_rating,desc&title_t...).

IMDb is aware of attempts at vote stuffing and adjusts their algorithms to discount attempts to distort the results of user ratings. IMDb does not disclose who is a regular user and their methods to filter out vote stuffing to make it more difficult to counter those measures.

Right, I know about the Top 250, but anyway I would like to do my own searches for best movies without fake results. I think that IMDB should control that kind of thing, for credibility sake. We users don"t use only the Top 250. Thanks for your attention and sorry for my english.

Hilmand, do you want us to watch 100 other obscure Turkish movies? We don't have anything against Turkish movies but something is wrong when a list of the best movies in the advanced search contains almost ONLY Turkish movies. It's a disgrace.

Hi Angelo Pilla,

I was simply using the IMDb Top 250 and Top 1000 as an example.

I believe what would be helpful if IMDb allow users to sort by Weighted Rating (which is used to determine the IMDb Top 250) as opposed to the average user rating. Unfortunately, the Weighted Rating is only computed for films with 25,000 or more regular users.

If one assumes that only half of the votes are from regular users, you can approximate sorting by Weighted Rating by setting the minimum number of votes to 50,000.

Highest Rated Feature Films Released 1970 to 1979 With At Least 50,000 Votes
62 titles.
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&num_votes=50000,&release_date=1970,1979&sort=...

You may wish to experiment with the minimum number of votes to get the kind of results you desire.

The Chaos Class already have more than 20 000 votes. If I put a minimum of 25 000 votes as a criteria to avoid turkish movies, a lot of really important movies with less than 25 000 votes will be out of the search results. When I search for old movies I usually put a minimum of 5000 votes, since old movies are not so popular and seen as recent movies. Thanks, anyway.

FYI ...

Apparently, it is possible to exclude
a specified country from your search.

Try this:

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?view=simple&count=250&num_votes=10000,&release_date=197...

In that URL, note the exclamation mark preceding the "countries" parameter:

   !countries=tr

With the exclamation mark, that parameter excludes the specified a country of origin.

(Note: Due to a bug, the title of that search page incorrectly indicates
"Country of Origin Turkey", even though the search actually excludes
the specified country.)

You can also exclude multiple countries.  For example:

   !countries=tr|us

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?view=simple&count=250&num_votes=10000,&release_date=197...

(Again, note that the page title incorrectly indicates inclusion of the
specified countries, even though the search actually excludes those countries.)

Thanks. That helps a lot! But I'm still concerned about the fact that IMDB permits this kind of thing. Some users will think that The Chaos Class is actually the greatest movie ever, and will look for some way to see it. IMDB should care about this.

I haven't seen the mentioned film, and I generally prefer to refrain from judging films that I haven't seen. I therefore have no opinion on it.  I personally don't care about IMDb user ratings.

Thank you, Angelo for raising this issue and thank you Nobody for providing us with the exclamation mark trick. This is the ultimate search if you want to discover good international (non-US) cinema while excluding overrated Turkish and Indian movies:

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=250&!countries=tr|us|in&num_votes=4096,&release_d...

Yugoslavia will have three movies at the top but I don't think they ruin the whole list by being there and I wanted to exlude as few countries as possible. And btw, "Pretty Village Pretty Flame" is my favorite movie of all time and I am not even from that country. :) Former Yugoslavia has two country codes, BTW. xyu and yucs.

Anyone thats been on imdb for a while knows there isnt much honesty in the ratings - i can provide you with 10 websites offering money to shill review a movie - i can show you over 100 active users with 10/10 reviews for every movie they have ever reviewed yet IMDB does nothing about it nor does it allow you to report them - i have tried report for being inappropriate but imdb do nothing - Until IMDB get their house in order it will be like verything in life these days - just another con, lie , obfuscation and the user will have to do the digging to find the true honest reviews and real answers!
