Profile Icons and Movie Posters

My profile icon on getsatisfaction as well as the miniature posters created for IMDb title pages have a way lower quality than the original images I submitted.
My IMDb posters are about 500x750 px, sharp and nearly without compression artefcats. Not so the size reduced images, which are blurred and pixilated. To avoid this I submitted a poster in the final size of 182x268 px, however it was declined. Nice try.

Same goes for my profile icon, as you can see for yourself:

Original:

On the left: profile icon. On the right: image size reduced by me

I wish, a staff member could improve the automatic image resizer to get posters and icons which are technically and qualitatively up to date.

Thank you. I took your advise and opened a ticket directly with Get Satisfaction.

Next I opened a ticket directly with IMDb, and while doing so I thought I might examine the size reduced poster images even more. What I found out is shown in the following text, which I included in the ticket:
The images are way too much compressed by the automatic size reducer to a JPG-quality of 82 instead of the full 100. This results in showing pixel-grain, clearly visible in the white space around the icons in my example images. Furthermore the process has enabled chroma color subsampling which results in blurring colors. This should be disabled to remain sharp colors.
My examples of the size reduced images only have 7 and 9 KB left. That much compression is really not reasonable, when on the other hand it is allowed to add original poster images with up to 20 MB each!

IMDb mini-poster: 7 KB; mine 25 KB

IMDb mini-poster: 9 KB; mine 33 KB

The effect might be more unpleasant in photos with people or other real things, but with these icons it is easier to explain.

I allowed myself again to contact IMDb Customer Service. Just for those of you who might be interested, here's the content of my mail:

I contacted you about this before. This time please forward this to technical staff. They might consider adjusting the automatic size reducer regarding the problems I explain further down.

Please do not answer by just sending me the link to the IMDb help page as you did before. The help page does not help with this problem.

To begin with I'd like to say, this is a general problem. It is not an issue regarding my own submissions. However you can take the URLs and submission references above for examples.

The problems are as follows:

The miniature posters automatically created for IMDb title pages have a way lower quality than the original images I submitted. My IMDb posters are about 500x750 px. They are sharp and nearly without compression artefcats. Not so the automatically created size-reduced images, which are blurred and pixilated.

First of all the images are way too much compressed by the automatic size reducer to a JPG-quality of 82 instead of the full 100. This results in showing pixel-grain, clearly visible in the white space around the icons in my example images. Furthermore the process has enabled the option of chroma color subsampling which results in blurring colors. This should be disabled to remain sharp colors.

I wish, you could adjust the automatic image resizer to get posters which are technically and qualitatively up to date. The poster image is one of the things that come at first sight to a visitor and therefore it has influence on the reputation of the whole IMDb. This might be just my own opinion, but I hope it is important to you, too.

You may take a look at the comparison of the automatically resized posters to images I created myself. Please see the link to Get Satisfaction: ...
