Solved

nothing on a page is a link

the new design is so bad it's impossible to work with as a contributer

i can't even open multiple windows because everything is fake code

to add more missing episodes or edit them i need to open them in a new tab

for example to add a missing episode number

but i can't click anything to do it.

year is not a link

season is not a link

season № is not a link

the name of the show is not a link and not even intractable

just to add episode № i now have to open a new tab, manually type imdb.com by keyboard open the terrible search, manually type the name of the show, then close the tab because in the last second imdb has swapped what i was trying to click for something entirely different, open a new tab, manually type imdb.com by keyboard open the terrible search, manually type the name of the show, wait for 15 seconds, then click the name of the show, then click episodes, then click back because super slow imdb has loaded another line of garbage for you to click, wait for 15 seconds, then click seasons, then click the number of the season, then look for the episode number for 10 minutes because it was moved again and is blending with the rest and is unreadable and the font makes you dyslexic even if you never have been before then count ten times on fingers because the font is so terrible and the episode number is so hard to find, then press the episode, then scroll for 10 minutes down where the edit button is, past six full 50" pages of ads, then look in the wall of text for the episode number string, then go to 1 and count on fingers again because by the time of opening it all and screaming at the screen already forgot the episode number and only then press submit three times and close pointless window that was added instead of track number

and each click takes ages to load because instead of html this is all now written in macromedia flash for BolgenOS

you really should make the "add episode" and "edit page" into jpegs instead of buttons so everyone would have to mail their contributions through fedex

@agof Sorry to hear, however, none of what you describe is expected behaviour. Please see the advice in https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/common-issues/why-is-imdb-displaying-differently-on-my-browser/GF2ZAR69V859XLHF especially the point on plug-ins such as ad blockers and also VPN software. Let us know how it goes after following the advice.

@agof If none of the above helps, please describe a change you are trying to make (and do not submit it) and we will take a look at the path required to make the change.

@Col_Needham it is expected behaviour because it is how the site is written now. you can read the code by pressing RMB view page source

and it is consistent on three different browsers with 2 entirely different engines

the links were removed and replaced by super slow spaghetti code

spam elements were added

fonts were changed and the position of information pointlessly moved around

@agof We had trouble following the path you were taking to make the update, sorry, so we assumed there was a display issue.  You should not have to jump through the steps you to describe, so as requested above:

Please describe a change you are trying to make (and do not submit it) and we will take a look at the path required to make the change.

Thanks.

@agof it was working for last 8 years, now it does not for no reason whatsoever. and the site is slow

no it is not on my side

and the normal part of the site works fine it's all the shockwave flash objects that take their time to load, and then they move all the elements which i just wanted to click away, replacing them with spam

@agof I don't know what you mean by "MMB".

I am trying to narrow down where you are actually experiencing a problem so you can avoid trying to fix things that are working as designed.

However, I can tell you:

  • Where you have the word Lexx in a red box above the words "Episode list", that word "Lexx" is not intended to be clickable. You have to click Back, above the title and to the left, to get back to the main page for the series.
  • On the other hand, the SeasonsYears, and Top-rated, as well as the 1 2 3 4 below them, are indeed supposed to be clickable. If they are not clickable for you, then there is a problem somewhere but I don't know what it is.

Hi @agof -

Just so I am clear on the issue, when you are on the Episode List page of a series title, you click on "Seasons", "Years", and "Top-Rated", and nothing changes on the page, is that correct?

issue is that the navigation is poorly designed for smartphones only

instead of being designed for everyone including contributors. who use pcs

i click it with mmb and nothing happens, because those are not links

@agof Sorry, but the navigation is not only designed for smartphones.  I am writing this reply on a Windows 10 laptop and everything is fine.  Given that two staff members and another contributor are unable to reproduce the issue, we will need more information on what system you are using, what browser is installed, and what special features were available via your middle mouse button on the old pages?  What happens when you click your left mouse button?

Alternatively, please describe an edit you would like to contribute to an episode and we will look at the path to making it which does not involve the steps you describe above.

We have not received any similar complaints from anyone else, sorry.

no one even tried to reproduce the issue

press [mmb] not [lmb]. or [rmb] [open in a new tab], which also doesn't work because the links were replaces by shockwave flash.

[lmb] doesn't matter

[mmb] on a link is not a special feature it's universal web action opening a new tab, same way pressing [mmb] on a tab closes it. it's universal for all the browser since forever. same as [m4] [m5] are forward backwards, or pressing [mmb] on a page starts scrolling

the process is that i can't just create a new tab with episodes without having to basically start from scratch from imdb frontpage. and that all the spam like "top rated" is slow to load and makes GUI jump around.

there are no similar complaints because this is something contributors would need. common users on smartphones do not need to have multiple tabs of the episodes page, several times per week. also out of contributors most people would suffer anything before they would write about it. unless it's as bad as this redesign, about which there are tens of posts created

Just so you know, agof, the site loads slowly on smartphones too. There is a lot of JavaScript (DOM manipulation, AJAX/fetch requests and Service Worker) bloat. I don't see where any of this has anything to do with Flash. For the most part, on most websites, Flash has been forgone for all the beautiful features of HTML 5, which may be poorly optimized in the Chromium web browser engine (even after all these years) despite being so awesome. Whether or not you're running a 32-bit program/app on a 64-bit architecture also kind of affects things. Such a mess this has been. (Google search results, Reddit [sans old Reddit], Twitter and GitHub are four other examples of websites that are ridiculously demanding upon computer hardware regardless of what operating system the browser is running upon.)

Am I to understand correctly that some things that used to be hyperlinks on certain parts of IMDb are suddenly no longer hyperlinks? I didn't notice anything sudden in that regard. A lot of hyperlinks were replaced with event-driven HTML Elements with location-modifying event listeners, at least a year ago, the way I recall.

@agof Thank you.  This is all we needed - a simple description of the problem - these page elements cannot be opened in a new tab.  We will file a ticket with the team to investigate the cause.

@agof The ticket reference for this is #D110078332, although it is unlikely we will have an answer before the new year, sorry.

In the meantime there is a workaround which may help via advanced title search. Using The Simpsons (1989) as an example, start at:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?series=tt0096697&sort=release_date,desc&count=250

then use the filters on the left to control the search results, for example, if updating episodes from 2023:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?series=tt0096697&release_date=2023-01-01,2023-12-31&sort=release_date,desc&count=250

you can also control the sort order of the results.

So grab the title ID of the show you are updating and replace tt0096697 with the ID of your show:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?series=tt0096697&sort=release_date,desc&count=250

and you can open any episode link from the search results in a new tab.

Hope this helps.

@jeorj_euler

i used smartphones as an example of bad design paradigm, and flash as a joke from the times when sites went all in on flash. flash is discontinued but the mentality remains. imdb is bloated with nonsense and bad design today, but even the previous iterations were terrible.

the urls to the pages are filled with junk, and when you use search or your ratings or someone's ratings it's basically just a list you can't refine anything about. the url generated is just a string of garbage and you can't leap 100 pages or to the date. not with GUI not by inputting that into the url

the pure HTML may have been replaces with php or css or whatever bloat is in fashion now, long ago, but at the beginning of the year at least everything was clickable and intractable, now it is not. and always is bugged and doesn't even display information until you click show more 50 times
